Float charge for a 12V (nominially 12.8V) Lead-Acid battery is 13.8V (at ~75 degrees F). Undercharing the battery at 12V will kill it VERY FAST. I'd say the battery would be lucky to last six months with only a max of 12V on the battery.

  2. Re:Conformal Coating on Coating a Motherboard In Thermal Resin? · · Score: 5, Informative
We conformal coat our circuit boards at my current job and I can assure you that it is not what he's looking for.

Conformal coating is typically a thin layer of silicone/urethane/acrylic used to keep moisture from getting at the parts on the board. It can not sustain immersion in liquid.

He's looking for epoxy potting, which we also do occassionly. The trouble with epoxy potting is getting the heat out of the board. You need to leave the thermally conductive parts outside of the potting so that you can remove the heat. The epoxy itself isn't thermally conductive enough to get processor heat out, even on a processor with passive cooling.

You can do this yourself if you have enough time and epoxy, though I'm not sure how much success you'll have. A failed attempt probably means a board that is no longer useable.

The very best ones get cured in a vacuum so that all of the air bubbles are pulled out. There are many other types you can use that don't require a vacuum.

This is the case in any college town, really...it isn't specfic to Pitt or even a college in a city. Any place where you have a large number of "kids" living with parents that are capable of paying overpriced rent, you'll have over priced housing. In my apartment in State College (which isn't in a city), if only two people lived there it was like $350 each a month. If three people lived there it was $325 a month. Four people worked out to $300 a month...and this was 10 years ago.

  6. Re:CRAPacitors failed way before tin whiskers on Tin Whiskers — Fact Or Fiction? · · Score: 1

I bet you'll find that the problem is not the capacitor, but the circuit that is using the capacitor. Bad circuit designs lead to damaged components and capacitors are usually the ones that fail. The lower voltage you can make the cap, the cheaper it is. Unfortunatley, a lower voltage capacitor also puts it very close to its operating voltage. A voltage spike can then pop the capacitor. You can mitigate the damage by additional protection, but that also costs money. This isn't to say that the capacitor wasn't the failure point, but after years of working in the circuit design industry, a failed cap means that the circuit broke it.

I'll call this one beforehand - Score: 5 Flamebait

Metallica hate is so pervasive that, at this point, it seems "popular" to hate Metallica for any number of dumb reasons. My two biggest complains are:

    1. Metallica killed Napster - Did you really expect to be able to freely download any song you like, as easily as you like, forever and ever? Metallica may have been the first major band to bring a lawsuit against Napster, but I woudln't of given Napster another three months before someone else stepped in. And what did we get out of Napster crashing? P2P programs that let you share WAY more than music. You could get games, movies, porno, AND music on the software that popped up after Napster got shut down. I'm probably the only one that thinks this, but I appreciate Metallica getting Napster shut down. Now I can get the same music AND files from torrents.

    2. Metallica sold out after (insert album name here) - The album changes after whoever you talk to. They adapted their music as time went on. Would you still want to be listening to the exact same stuff that they were making in 1984? A lot of long-life bands have do this to survive. Zepplin did it, the Stones, Chili Peppers...they all GROW as a band. I hated old Chili Peppers, but I love the new stuff. I wouldn't have bought any of their cds had they not changed their style.

On a side note, I do think that Lars is a little bitch.

Also, every time I uninstall firefox 3, I could no longer click links in outlook unless I reset default browser to IE and switch back. This is very irritating.

That is how your PC works. It uses certain programs to launch certain file types. With Firefox as your default browser, your PC knows that when you click on a URL to use Firefox to launch it. When you uninstall Firefox, your PC now no longer knows what to do with those URL files. Once you tell it to use IE (by making it the default browser), then it works properly.

That's like using Winamp for MP3s, uninstalling Winamp, and then complaining that Media Player doesn't play your MP3s anymore.
