1) Pay employees well, even extravagantly, in order to keep the 'best' management.
2) Use income to grow, adding mission creep and bloat.
3) Spend the money on nearly anything, calling it an investment.
Non-profits love profit, and will never have any shortage of ideas on how to spend it.
On the plus side, take some satisfaction in the realization that this guy's grandchildren, or their children, will most likely be of mixed race. He's not only wrong; he's already lost.
It's great these people have been able to overcome the social handicap their ethnicities started with in America (as in, not being able to vote, having discriminatory hiring practices put in place against them, etc, etc). America must truly be a land of racial equality!
Yes, those practices were eliminated many decades ago. Thanks.
Apple has gotten a free ride in a lot of ways. Much of what they do is so slick, it obfuscates the heavy-handed control they strive for.
But Apple loves their lawyers and relishes their litigation. And I predict that soon they will go too far, and when they do they will experience a backlash that makes Sony hate seem like mild annoyance. The greater the love lost, the greater the hate that remains.
You demonstrated my comment to be true, by your response. The majority of readers who bother to think one way or another, likely think of you as an immature, overly emotional wreck. I could address your points, one by one, demonstrate where I agree and where I disagree... but it was unnecessary. To the extent that are posts are intended to persuade readers, you've already lost.
And that, of course, was my original point. I didn't address your beliefs; they were immaterial. I was pointing out that as long as you posted like an angry fifteen year old boy, your stated opinions would be ignored. Think of it as constructive criticism.
For what it's worth, I'm not voting for Thompson. I'm voting Paul. I said that your type of vitriol makes me want to vote for Thompson. My reaction is fairly typical, which is why mature people don't write like you.
You make me want to vote Thompson. Do you realize that you will never convert anybody? Do you realize that your bile turns more people against your position? I might disagree with the grandparent poster, but I don't think he's a jerk.
I am convinced that this immature behavior cost the Democrats the last two elections.
If you have two wiimotes, one located 45 degrees to your left, one 45 degrees to your right, wouldn't the appropriate math be able to locate the position of your pen in 3 dimensions?
Normally I just nod and appreciate these hacking projects from a distance, but I think I'm going to jump in and do this for myself. Wish me luck, everybody.
*sigh* I should learn that you can't attempt reasonable and moderate posts in a console thread without getting flamed.
" The graphics are pretty much comparable,"
Honestly guy, give it a rest. To still be trying to claim that in late 2007 is borderline delusional.
But they are. The PS3 is better in some games, the 360 is better in others. I expect that in the long-term, the PS3 will turn out to be more powerful, but they are clearly similar. Just like the original X-Box was in the same league, but slightly superior, to the Gamecube. They are both graphically superior to the Wii, which is closer to last gen graphics. The 360 & PS3 are close enough in power to negate it as a serious advantage for one consoleor the other.
"is less expensive"
When has console price EVER been a factor in which system gamers buy? Saving 50,100,150 dollars to give up on all the games for an entire generation? PS2 owners are still working through their insanely large library of games and are upgrading to PS3s when the price drops to their own personal price point.
I think that your last sentence contradicts your first. Price is always a factor, in everything anybody buys.
The 360 library is garbage. Halo 3 is a basketcase, Mass Effect is a massive step backwards in rpgs with last gen looking graphics, Lost Planet and Dead Rising were mediocre titles, Forza and PGR are jokes compared to GT.
I think this statement is probably most indicative of your skewed perspective. Saying the graphics on a PS3 are better than the 360 is completely reasonable. Saying the PS3 has a better library of games is silly. By the time that you make this claim, the vast majority of readers have dismissed you as a partisan troll. The selection of games and the price are the two major liabilities the PS3 has.
The PS3 will play every single big name franchise so many Europeans bought PS2s for. Anyone suggesting that all those PS2 gamers are going to give up all those big name titles for a graphically weaker, absurdly unreliable console just to save 50 to 100 bucks?
Well, the 360 is more successful than the PS3 in the US. Lots of people here have given up all those big name titles for a "graphically weaker, absurdly unreliable console". Are they all wrong? Besides, most of those titles will eventually migrate to whatever console is most successful. There are no loyalties among companies, just temporary alliances.
Why do you think the PS3 is selling better in Europe than the 360? The graphics are pretty much comparable, and the 360 has a much larger library of games and is less expensive. Is the Blu-Ray drive a bigger factor in Europe than in America?
I don't have either; the only next-gen console I have is a Wii. But if I was to get one of the two, it would be the 360, purely because of the game selection. I'm just pushing that purchase off as long as possible, hoping the console will be more reliable and cheaper in the future.
The detention was for arguing with the teacher, I'm sure. We all know the school would be better off running Firefox as a matter of course; it would at the least be more secure. But the teacher should be able to, for instance, say "Stop using Word. I want this done in notepad."
It would be stupid, but the teacher can set the parameters of how the kids perform the work.
If the kid wants to promote Firefox, good for him. I'm sure he's sharper than the teacher. But the proper way is to write something up that lists the cost/security benefits and give it to somebody official, not just install and run the software.
(I'm assuming this was the school's machine, not his own computer.)
I think he also touched on some of the same themes in Friday. It's a different universe, of course, but as I recall the future nation of California extended the franchise to everybody. Parents could vote for their infant children, kin could cast proxy votes for people in comas and even those in cryogenic suspension. He portrayed it as quite an intractable mess. It made the same point as Starship Troopers by presenting a society that was its exact opposite.
That's what I was going to say; but now I'm redundant... better say more...
Tetris is just pure. Kind of like how a long-distance runner is more a pure athlete than a football player. Nothing but you, the game, and hand-eye coordination.
It's not that one-sided. For example, we've invented cars, and now we drive fast. People with a poor ability to process visual information quickly, project trajectories, and convert that to a decision to turn/brake are going to be selected against. That's just an innate consequence of having developing an automobile.
We are changed our tools, while our tools are changing us. Granted, our tools are changing at a much faster rate...
Every technological advancement that we have ever seen has been created by a warlike species. If you want to extrapolate from a sample of one, space-faring aliens to be just as warlike.
I don't even understand how, if no time passes for a photon, how it can be created, destroyed, and bounced off stuff. Since position and direction can change despite the frozen status of the photon, doesn't that imply that those are not purely traits of the photon itself?
I find that standing improves the experience for some games. Not for a strategy game, like Fire Emblem, but for the action games, it makes them more fun. It also is, I think, a heck of a lot better for you. Nobody reading slashdot has a problem with not sitting enough. Didn't we just get a story a few weeks back about how the simple act of standing burns significantly more calories than sitting?
I'm at the point where, if a game is released on both a pc and a console I own, I'll probably opt for the console version. I might go pc if there is a significant modding component to the game, or if the interface really demands mouse/keyboard input, but in general the whole experience of console gaming seems better than pc gaming.
I've stopped caring about cutting edge graphics, and decided that having to install games is stupid; pc games are far buggier; and I like the living room+tv combo better than desk+monitor.
I prefer pcs for real-time strategy, which hasn't ever been done well on a console (but could be on the Wii... come on, guys!). Also the pc is great for small quirky independent games.
Maybe the cloud is part of a positive feedback cycle that keeps the Earth's climate in acceptable ranges. Probably not, but since we're all jumping to conclusions here...
8% of dollar sales. That's only 1% of actual units. ;-)
Heh. Finance jokes.

The issue isn't that you couldn't have fun with the Wii, but that Nintendo really doesn't release much interesting stuff.
Really? I think the Wii is dominating this generation because they're the only company that did do something interesting.

Thank you for proving my position.

And would no doubt love to lose another billion in the same fashion every year until they are richer than Microsoft.

Look up the definition of "seriously." It may help you stop from contradicting yourself again in the future.
