Most people are bright, even the ignorant ones. Telling them they need to be educated won't help either.
The most disturbing thing that seems to be happening with information overload is that pople just dont wan't to listen to you. It seems hard to have people listen to you for listenings sake. People don't want to hear ideas and just let it sit for a while and hear some more and think some more. They want to know, its A or B.
I feel like almost any topic I don't know much about, but im also happy not really caring about alot of the topics even if they mean bad things if they are true or false as the case may be. Alot of things might be messed up, but as bill hicks said, I look out my window and its sunny and birdys are singing.
If people could be happier to discuss and hold judgement it would be much easier for everyone to form long term opionions on topics. Im not sure how a US politician could discuss issues without both sides disliking them for being indecisive. If the president could get up and say "All scientific opinion seems to say we are causing global warming, and if we don't change our lifestyles our childrens children probably wont be able to have such a good life. Even if somehow the evidence is not accurate in the future cleaner air, less pollution are good for everyone anyhow.". Instead of "Global warming is the biggest threat to our live. But until other countries start to do their share, why should we?", well, id probably check what i was drinking.
Anyhow, my rambling point is, conversations should not have to be arguments with a winner and loser. Debating an issue is great, but not when debating is really just yelling at someone with your fingers in your ears.
Agreed.
However thin air is a bit of an extreme way to call their evidence:) Unfortunately It seems we are getting pretty close to fishing net law enforncement though, but you cannot discuss the issues even here without getting modded as flamebait, let alone to narrow minded law makers:)
Wikipedia isnt a reliable source? Where on earth is this mysterious relable source?
The best you can do is list information while citing sources, but thats not even totally reliable.
Id still bet wiki is far more reliable than most the crap you read online about a topic.
Yes, Microsoft is dying so fast they have been posting record revenues and profits.
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/080124/aqth094a.html?.v=1
To compare the strengh of yahoo verse microsoft is laughable. Yahoo has always struggled to turn a profit despite restructuring after the dot com crash, microsoft is the posterchild of profit making. Sure microsoft is dying, just like we are all dying.
I think people also don't put into perspective recessions, advertising traditionaly is the worst hit. Yahoo will have trouble justifying their decision to shareholders at that point, hell even at this point. They wanted 12 months to turn it around last time microsoft came knocking with a few jumbo jets of money. I can't see any sizable future for yahoo, google will just keep eating away at them and provide and alternative to microsoft people want, yahoo will get squeezed out.
This reminds me of why you cannot put phone numbers on tv shows or movies. In both these cases its the same reason, people are idiots, do people think they are going to ring up a movie character and talk to him? Its completely stupid, but guess what, it happens, so they put 555...
If you are going to write your phone number on the worlds biggest bathroom wall, you cannot complain about the amount of calls you get. I feel the best response to thier quote about all the traffic is "Duh!". In both the phone number and the url examples I don't see how anyone who thought about it wouldnt realise this is a poor idea.
I like their complaints too, its sure amusing. "Something is not working as we intended on the web, can everyone fix it?". Isn't that like fire department calling someone to put out a fire they started?
Now if only microsoft would comment on how hard it is to get their web sites working cross browser, what a wonderful world this would be.
What does hitting release dates matter anyhow? Why does the entire industry seem to harp on about them. They are estimates, its not a cure for cancer, it doesnt matter when it comes out. The only people who should really care are shareholders of public companies or if contracts are in place.
To base hitting guessing dates for releases as a sign of quality makes no sense to me. The quality of the product should be the sign of the quality. You can be the most on time peice of shit ever made, that doesn't mean much. Sure you can argue that missing dates indicates people are poorly managing the project and that will reflect on the quality of work. However, anyone who has worked in development should know that you can just as easily have poor software being made on time.
Everyone hates to wait for something we are looking forward to, or click our tounges when a company we dont like slips on dates, but can't we stop this obsession with release dates and judge a product on how it works?
Firstly, small scale rain manipulation is very possible.
Secondly, yes, chinise are fun to talk to. Ask them about The Tiananmen Square Massacre, most will have no idea what you are talking about. The rest will argue against your so called facts, its all western lies and/or its a great thing the goverment protected the country. Funny to watch them attack you for no real reason:)
If only the US farmed out the PR work to the chinese after kent state. Vietnam would have been the substitute for sliced bread in comparing the best things in life.
On a side note, in sydney regular protests by chinese over the, ehm, bad treatment?:) of Falun Gong, Tibetens, well alot of people. I never quite understood their point, china has poor human rights, no shit. Its the chinese populous who dont know what happens, not the rest of the world, and I dont see too many of the chinese journalists covering your efforts. Guess when you aren't being persecuted you have too much free time.
There was an interesting peice on wired about just this.
http://blog.wired.com/defense/eye_on_china/index.html
It seems well informed, puts in perspective the huge challenge of shooting down a satalite, well more accurately, doing it without america knowing you will do it. The US was well aware the chinese were going to launch an ASAT. The amount of missles required to take down all the GPS satalites (besides the fact 1/2 are on the side of the plannet when you attack) means you are going to give you hand away, after the first strike america will have more then enough to destroy all your major launch sites before you can do anything.
China might have the worlds largest army, but america is surrounded by one big mofo moat, filled with the worlds most powerful navy:)
You can bag microsoft all you want, but for all the things tech companies want to be, microsoft actually did it.
Does microsoft get everything right? No, but they are nothing short of impressive when it comes to going back to fix mistakes and completely destroying the competition. Gates doesnt deny this, you win by destroying your competition, not creating the best product.
Is bill gates the smartest person who ever lived? No, but hes a very smart guy none the less.
Is bill gates the nicest person who ever lived? No, hes an asshole if you are competing with him. But how many people get to the top by counting raindrops and kissing kittens? Steve jobs is exactly the same. It requires drive and single mindedness, even if you are wrong, to do anything of this scale.
Im still unsure why microsoft caused a lack of inovation in the computer market, for one, how big were pc's before windows 95?
For a guy who gets so many things wrong, microsoft didn't do too bad. We will look back at google in 20 years and see how holy they are then, but I get the feeling you can replace m$ with g$$gle on most comments and it will be pretty close to the mark.
Is your working set honestly over 8GB? Your dataset might be extremely large... but I would think that for the most part you'd get along just fine with swapping out to a decently fast device and your working set would be considerably below 8GB.
What on earth are you basing that on? Someone says they need/want 8gb plus but your argument is that he doesn't?
It happens all the time, its very easy. People get shot out of the sky with slow moving bullets, now thats hard. Aiming something that travels at the speed of light is easy, they have unlimited ammo and you fire continuously so you just wave it around and you are almost guaranteed to hit.
I guess people are bored of pointing lasers in cinemas we have to do something much more intelligent like shining them in aircraft. What sort of idiot figures this is a good idea, you might as well just shoot at it. Easy to punish though, have them drive 100mph down the highway in traffic and cover their eyes and ask if they are having fun yet.
So god made the earth about the time civilization was making beer...and the solar system is over 4 billion years old... man sometimes Im a little late to work but this guy takes the cake! Hes still pretty keen on taking the credit though...
Seriously, no irregular major upgrade cycle OS is going to just work exactly like before.
Hasn't anyone else grown up with operating system updates causing enormous issues. Even as XP for an example, I can remember for years youd have software that wouldnt work on XP only 98/ME. I think adding the HAL that stopped many direct hardware access programs working was a huge issue. Vista on the other hand... sure some things dont work, but it doesnt seem to be in the same league as from 98/ME to XP.
If you arent going to change something that breaks something, you can argue was it really worth changing at all? For anything you can attack microsoft for, not providing backwards compatability is simply not one of them. They do it to products detriment every time.
To start with, not sleeping will kill you. However we are talking months of not sleeping, this is obviously something you cannot do without a specific brain injury and is why you don't see it happen.
People don't die from staying awake for 3 days, you might hallucinate, but you will have no long term ill effects. Lets add in the computer games, I cant think of one deadly aspect of computer gaming, maybe some severe rsi?:p
This really leaves you with a few options of huge doses of caffeine or drugs. So thats what killed him, not being awake or computer games, which is whats mentioned. But hey, who can really trust the two of three stories the Chinese government decide to make public, it couldn't be for some self serving reason could it???
Hitler played too many PS1 games back in Austria, look what happened to him! War and violence is a new phenomenon, lets burn everyone at the stake till the issue goes away.
Oh and for people surprised germany has so many totalitarian laws, the funniest part is they create them to counter Nazism, apparently strict over reaching laws will stamp this issue out, oh, the delicious irony:)

and you sued them? Interesting the first few posts are of support, wonder what the reponse would be if this story was about the RIAA.
These guys DO know how to market a product! Maybe they should instead focus their efforts on non Brittany Spears style artists?

Do you offer to pay 44 billion dollars for something you dont REALLY want?

You capitalist pig! FOSS should cost nothing and let programmers earn next to nothing, thats what we all want!

Microsoft!!! Oh, sorry, reflex. Actually, every motherboard ive bought in the past few years has firewire.

Sure, I'd do that to an 11yo kid as well. But when its a 6ft 5, 250lb black guy with 10 friends I probably will just let it slide.. just this once :)

Now I can just leave my extra few gigs of ram nice an empty, they need a rest! Once we get it down to 640k we can move back to dos.

What is an audio wave? You mean sound wave, which is a compression wave, which is nothing to do with em.
"Ah, every week there is a canal" "Theres no need to yell Michael, im all around you"
