It was obvious to everyone. I've read in several places there was resistence even at Microsoft but I guess, as you say, that the higher ups wanted to capture the tablet market at all costs.
I still think that the ideal solution is 2 totally different interfaces and that huge targets and lots of whitespace are a waste of real estate on mouse devices. But I guess the young people are used to touch UI and that we the old farts don't matter much
Well, correct me if I'm mistaken, but the only part of the UI where Microsoft has backpedaled is on the start screen where they went back to a more classic start menu. In Win 10, they've changed some parts of the UI and the default apps to ones being designed for touch.
When it went viral the big G had to fire him because not doing so would have made them look bad in the public eye.
I wouldn't really care much if it had been an extremist and sexist piece but it isn't.
You may or may not agree but it's a reasoned document.
Alas, it doesn't really matter, what mattered is that it got viral and many piece of news about it made it look much worse than it really is, they said it said things that are just not there. Many people who read this terrible reporting was outraged (as I would be if it really was what they claim it is) and then the man was lost.
It's sad we've gotten so uptight about certain topics that merely suggesting something different to the accepted narrative can get you fired.
Yep, and the worst thing is they used (use?) the crappy switches even on pretty expensive mice/trackballs where you would expect something better. Freaking ridiculous
Firefox also syncs your profile across devices, maybe Chrome does more, I don't know. Anyway I agree that Firefox would need to be much better than Chrome for people to switch back and with the resources Google has that looks unlikely
How many people you know that use Chrome? Why do they use it?
There's surely some people who can name technical, usability reasons, etc. But I bet the majority use it because:
A Chrome ad (everywhere in Google's websites)
It came bundled with something else and they don't care/know how to get the old browser back
Someone told them it's the best
Everybody else is using it
So, if these are in fact most people's reasons it doesn't matter much what Mozilla do since Google have a much greater advertising power.
Also, that speedup would have to be huge for Joe User to notice and care.
Also 2, Isn't 57 the version where they remove support for classic extensions? The huge number and variety and power of Fx's extensions are one of the main reasons for choosing Firefox. They're gonna remove it and they think they'll gain tons of users. They're just bonkers. I predict lots of people will leave Firefox when 57 is out.
" blaming Amazon for a shift to buying goods online".
Well, It would have happened sooner or later. I don't want the physical stores to go away but the fact is that many of them just can't compete with online. And the fact is that I only buy in brick and mortar when I have to have something right now. That, and when buying food or clothes
For me a screen is a pretty important thing in a music player but I guess some people don't care.
Anyway, my reasons to still use an "MP3" player in 2017 are that: My smartphone doesn't have an FM radio, using the player I avoid draining the phone's battery, I dare carrying the player in situations/places that I consider too dangerous for the much more expensive phone.
Now it's completely free (as in money) but you may be aware that the app used to cost 1€ per year. Somehow it managed to build up a huge user base and then Facebook bought it and eliminated the need to pay.
Of course pay-per-message is not the same thing as a yearly payment
They want everyone to forget that there was a world where you didn't need a Microsoft login and an app store to do things on Windows.
If you don't use those how are they going to gather data on you and earn money through their cut on the apps?.
I don't like iPhones but I don't mind their existance. They only thing I hold against them is that made acceptable the walled garden model to the masses. Now Microsoft is trying the same thing with Windows. Disgusting.
100% Agree. This is another of their tactics to get people used to the Windows Store. Didn't they do the same thing with Solitaire?
They're hellbent on removing the classic programs from Windows. Soon only the touch-optimized versions will remain. It is as if they wanted to make Windows hip by presenting it as a touch-first OS. "Look, we're just like Android and iOS, please use Windows instead a tablet with them".
I don't care if they add a touch optimized UI for Windows but please leave the mouse-optimized version (the OS itself, and the programs) alone.
You got it backwards: Microsoft knows what people likes and dislikes but they will put politics first. They know people like Paint the same way they know people would rather have no ads on a freaking OS (hello start menu full of publicity and stupid ads on a clean install of Windows 10) but they want to turn Windows into Android (with regards to spying, publicity and pushing the creator's services) and that requires removing some things users want
With Apple certainly having few options makes the choice easier. You also know all possibilities are good enough.
Anyway, I guess you're aware that Android phones prevent you from manually installing apps until you change a setting. Also, it might not matter to most people but the Apple way severely limits your freedom. I don't want a company to control what I can and can't install in my hardware.
According to TFA: "The malware is distributed through apps that masquerades as legitimate apps for WhatsApp or Pokemon GO. After the APK file has been installed on a victim's device".
While I have no idea what "apps for Whatsapp or Pokemon GO" means (maybe "for" should be "as"), the second part about installing the APK suggests that this happens when a user "sideloads" (I hate the term, implies there's something wrong with it, as if we were only ever supposed to install programs blessed by the OS corporate overlords) an app, In turn, this suggests that you'd be fine if you stuck to what's available on Google Play.
My point is, this is not a problem caused by an OS level vulnerability so no amount of updating the OS will fix it.
Yes, Android is atrocious regarding updates but that's another problem.
Yeah, one of the many things I don't like about Windows 10 is that there's no notion of stable version any more. Windows 7 is still supported and, AFAIK, it hasn't had any notable changes in UI or features since it was released, it just gets security updates, as it should be.
Windows 10 is developed in a sort of "agile" methodology: New versions every few months, any of which can contain any number of changes to the UI, and can add and/or remove features without notice. That's not something I like much in general, but on an OS I think it's beyond stupid
The subject says most of what I want to say. Consumer level computing is reaching a very sad state of affairs. It's infested with advertising, user spying, walled gardens, artificial limitations and in general, user-hostile "features".
The iPhone popularized the walled garden concept where the manufacturer decides what you can and can't do with your device by limiting what software you're allowed to run. Then Google designed Android to be a vehicle for pushing their services and spying the masses. Then Microsoft got the worst of both and pushed it into Windows 10. To top it all off, software manufacturers are pushing hard for a rent model where you have to pay periodically if you want to keep using the software.
All I really want is the classic model where I pay some money and can do whatever I want with my hardware and software. Right now, the only way to escape is to run Linux
Yeah, I didn't use it (save a couple of times to check it could actually control my tv) but it did no harm...until a recent update started creating notifications far too often to get itself noticed. I tried to find an option to disable them to no avail so I just rolled it back to the version it came with the phone and I've been happy ever since.
Indeed, artificially breaking things is bad. I hated when Firefox decided to remove support for plugins except for Flash. They're usually a source of security problems? Yes, but I'm an adult at least provide an option to enable it again.
It'd be nice if we could do everything without plugins but things are not always so perfect. I know of a corporate webapp designed years ago that added support for scanning though a Java applet. The alternatives (Oracle says just use Java Web Start, there's no standard API for scanning in browsers) are not enough so so far the app is at a dead end.
Also, Windows 10 in general but one of the things I can't stand about Windows (and, admittedly, every OS save for Linux/Unix) is that they tie the OS version to the UI so if you want to enjoy the internal improvements of Windows 10 you have to use their stupid UI.
It's worth noting that the recovered data has errors. You can see that the recovered images don't look exactly the same as the original ones. So, currently this would need redundant data and checksums to ve a viable storage medium
Yeah, you just gotta want to be paying attention. You just have a word processor/note taking application/whatever open and close everything else. It isn't that hard, IF YOU WANT.
It was obvious to everyone. I've read in several places there was resistence even at Microsoft but I guess, as you say, that the higher ups wanted to capture the tablet market at all costs.

Yep, and the worst thing is they used (use?) the crappy switches even on pretty expensive mice/trackballs where you would expect something better. Freaking ridiculous
And I bet it will be forced down everyone's throats much like touch optimized UIs are routinely forced on mouse users
Firefox also syncs your profile across devices, maybe Chrome does more, I don't know. Anyway I agree that Firefox would need to be much better than Chrome for people to switch back and with the resources Google has that looks unlikely

I'm pretty ignorant of professional game development but I thought most commercial software for Windows was compiled with Microsoft's compiler.
Yep, exactly that.
With Apple certainly having few options makes the choice easier. You also know all possibilities are good enough.

+1. Freaking stupid. I don't like infinite scrolling websites
