When I was a senior in college our senior project was a web based system where students could log in and see their grades, select courses to take for the coming year, etc.
When we presented this to our professors (these were computer science professors, btw), most of them we rather impressed but we had one professor that absolutely hated it. His hatred was so bad he was borderline hostile. His reason: we had decided that the students would log on using the same ID and Password they used for the web based email system. He was insisted that they should be using their social security numbers.
It was quite shocking to me. Fortunately, we were able to ignore him and continue with the presentation and got a good grade for it:)
It can be a the manufacturers fault. Here is a funny, related example. In college I drove a '91 Pontiac Sunbird. One interesting design feature in this car was that the switch to control the headlights was a lever near the driver's side door that you had to push in toward the dash to turn on the lights. In order to turn off the lights you had to reach around to the back of this lever and pull it back out toward you.
If you were carrying anything at all, it was very easy to accidentally turn on the ligts as you were getting out of the car. I didn't drive that much and when I did it was usually in the day time and I had a backpack with me. So, a few times when I got out of the car my backpack turned on the lights without me ever knowing it and when I went back to my car my battery would be dead and the car wouldn't start.
On one of these occassions I called the campus police to come jump start my car. When the guy got there he started questioning me about why my battery was dead when I had last driven, etc. I told him I had driven the day before during the day and had accidentally turned on the lights as I left the car. He didn't belive me. I showed him how the light switch worked and explained that my backpack probably hit it and he looked at me like I was stupid. Eventually I got him to hook up to my car to jump start it. While I was trying to start my car he leaned in to look at my dashboard to see what was happening and he turned on my lights by accident when he leaned in! I politely pointed that out to him and he didn't act like I was stupid again for the rest of the time.
So, In case you missed it: Me = The stupid user My Car being dead = What I'm calling tech support about The Light Switch = Whatever buggy or unintuitive feature got me in this mess The Campus Police = The tech support worker that acts like a jerk because he has never had my exact problem in his 20 years of working with personal computers and thinks that I must be an idiot because I am having this problem and keeping him from sitting around eating donuts.
Where can you make $80K programming? Seriously, I'm not (intentionally) being a jerk, I just want to know. I'm a "software developer" and I make barely more than half that, so I'd just like to know where you can make enough that $80K is the number you just pull out of the air when you think of a programmer's salary.
I went to Niagara Falls a couple of years ago and it is really amazing. I recommend going in from the Canada side though because it is much prettier over there. From what I saw, the Canada side surrounding the falls was pretty much like a big flower garden and the US side (where I'm from) was just a run-down town in New York with a waterfall beside it.
my job and my wife are separate, but someone there aren't enough resources to do either right
I received a couple of emails today that might help you with this. Something about viagra and enlargements. Probably won't help much with your job though.
And just because you have a fishing rod doesn't mean that you are going to catch fish.
I think you should attempt to avoid situations, locations, etc where people might want to do you harm. To me, this is the first step of self defense. It is true that these things are not always avoidable, but I would add that in the case that you are attacked by someone with a gun, merely owning a gun is not going to help you at all. You have to know how and be willing and capable of using it under pressure. It must be easily accessible to you after an attack is already underway. I'd say that outside of criminals, these things probably aren't true of most people who carry guns. Someone's 60 year old aunt probably doesn't have much chance of digging her gun out of her purse after the need has already presented itself with the big bad guy standing right there watching.
I think you just hit the nail on the head

This may be the most ironic post I've ever read. You were bored because no one was discussing the topic and they were instead complaining about it, so you posted another topic complaining about people saying they are bored instead of discussing the original topic.
This album is the only one I own that would suffer terribly from breaking it apart. It tells a story through the songs from beginning to end and each part really doesn't stand very well on its own. I have to say this is the only album I own that has to be listened to as an album.
But, I should also add, that I tend to only buy albums from artists I'm very familiar with and I end up liking almost every song on every album I buy. And, a lot of the time, I buy an album without hearing any songs from it. I just have very specifics tastes and I have a pretty high level of confidence that my favorites won't disappoint. There are about 5 groups on okayplayer whose albums I will buy without hearing a single song before hand (their singles usually don't get much airplay). Any given album usually doesn't have more than 1 song I don't like, but then again, these aren't your typical pop groups either. If any of you like hip-hop and don't know about the artists on okayplayer.com I highly recommend you give it a visit. The artists even post to the message boards there.
Well, as far as I know, my school doesn't belong to any official organization. I've never really thought of the whole organization membership thing to be all that important. Here is our little website in case you care. Beware, it has a java applet and quite a few animated gifs.
From what little I know about various forms of Kung Fu, I'd guess that Shotokan Karate is very different in some ways. Not quite as meditative, more of a hard style (but we have a bit of Aikido mixed in, so I think I can slightly relate to softer styles), but I'd say I probably get much the same benefit that you do. It gets me away from anything technology related for a while and I get a great deal of exercise out of it. And, you never know, I might have to actually use it one day (hope not).
I've also been doing quite a bit of running lately to compliment the karate training. I've been running around 3 miles a day.
Likewise, if anyone is interested in hearing about Shotokan Karate, you can email me or send me a message on msn at "stalemate365 at hotmail dot com".
I'll have to look that up, but I haven't had a single incident like this since the time when I went to the doctor and had the caffeine diagnosis and that was early 1997.

I think BSD and Apple would be also be immortal.
But I am eating an apple right now.

I just have to flip it over.
One of you is obviously thinking of Sisqo.
Yes, I have used ps often to find out the pids of running applications :)
that was bothering me too, but I didn't want to be the one acting like a grammar nazi and looking like a jerk! :)
Cost of living here is much lower than that. I rent a 3 bedroom, 2 bath house with a 1 car garage and a decent sized yard for $550/month.

I first thought comcast was going to be offering some channel similar to Court TV dedicated to showing Microsoft trials.
Replacement for Windows Explorer. Here is their homepage if you are curious. I think I originally read about it in a slashdot comment.

Not to mention that some studies have shown that gun owners are actually more likely to be killed by a gun than non-gun owners
You do understand that self defense and owning a firearm are not the same thing, right?
Do dreams count as a virtual world, in your opinion? I'm just asking because I die in my dreams once in a while, but I'm still here.
You probably wouldn't like these movies either
Well, he did admit to writing Quick and Dirty code. Maybe you'd be interested in Correct and Proper?

I think we have a winner here. Nicely done.

The Original Hip-Hop Lyrics Archive is the best i've found for hip-hop lyrics.
