Definitely, 8 and 9 were both only "ok" 7 and 10 I put at the same level as the early ones as well as other greats like Chrono Trigger. I really like the sophistication the stories are getting now. And the simple flexible materia system was much more intuitive and entertaining than the system in 8, I really didn't like that.
The story is really the most important part ot me, but it's followed closely by making my characters bigger and badder. Guess that's why I can still play the old games and love them even with the poor graphics (that of course looked stunning at the time;)).
FFVII is definitely a candidate for that, between the burning of the village and the scene with Aeris I was really worked up over killing Sephiroth. Square did an excellent job on that story. Of the new style FF's it's a toss up between VII and X for story.
I disagree, random combat is part of the genre for a reason. Certain games, such as Chrono Trigger pull it off without random combat, psuedo random sort of very well. But the random combat is part of the challenge. I've been just as irritated as everyone else when fighting random battles, until I realize that that's what makes the game difficult. OTOH some games go overboard, for instance Skiew of Arcadia goes too far.
I also like the idiom of the genre where it's usually possible to find an item that stops random battles at some point in the game.
OTOH Exploration is becoming more and more viable with the state of game graphics. Certainly you didn't have much to gain by exploring the world of Dragon Warrior.
It's kinda both isn't it. Different things for different people. And the ability for different styles of play to focus on the aspects of the game that they enjoy most. I've been thinking a lot about this lately, for all games, not just rpg's. There's obviously no formula. Personally, it's the combination story and leveling up that drives me. The story a little more, but there is a tremendous amount of satisfaction is seeing your character(s) get to be bad asses along the way.
Personally I love them all, old console rpg's (replaying Chrono Trigger now) and the new stuff. I view them all as equals, though I will admit that the storyliens and dialogue are becoming more sophisticated over time.
It's to the point where I'm tempted to start riding tracks only. [Partially because there don't seem to be any nice twisty roads here]
I could have told you that, I feel for you though. I agree, I feel naked without my helmet. I never ride the sportbike without it. I won't even use the shell helmets on the cruiser, unless they're dot approved. And still I feel better with a full face.
This is good stuff, as a biker one of my biggest concerns is protection. Dropping the bike is no big deal, wearing the right gear you're more or less safe. But in the case of collisions with other vehichles I'm not sure this will help. But more protection is always good.
Hmmm, terrible test. Many people have to experience things for themselves to believe it. As far as regurgitating facts from a story, which is essentially what you've described, is relatively easy.
I believe I'm using zSNES. I just dug up emulators a little while ago again. I tried them out way back and wasn't very happy with them. After running games on the DC with SNES and experiencing some slowdown, I decided to try pc emu's out again. I'm amazed at how polished some of them are, zSNES (or Snes9x if that's the one I'm using) is a very well written piece of software, wish I'd written it. It's nice to be able to play games I've loved in the past at my pc, avoinding the need to dig them out of the attic, or fight for space around the tv, with all the other console's dvd player, vcr, ect. Or having to blow on my Crono Trigger cartridge to get it to work;)
To be honest though the graphics don't bother me. I love the new games, they're gorgeous, but I love the old ones just the same. I get irritated at people (who are usually younger than I am) who try to be elitist about 2d rpg's. Though, it occurs to me right now, that if that were the type of games that were being made right now, we'd sure see more of them, because of a much smaller required developement time.
Yeah whatever, expect no more from an AC. 2d RPG's are dead. Take a look. I loved them, I still play them, and a true fan of RPG's still plays them all.
FFX-2 looks beautiful, personally I don't care if it's a sequel, I guess that's kinda cool, I'm just ready for the next one. Though it sucks to have to wait so long, we won't see it in the US until the end of '03 if not later. Thankfully I'm revisiting some of the past greats,... FFIII, Chrono Trigger, Lufia II. By the time I've finished playing through the classic rpgs maybe X-2 will be released in the US.
I think you are greatly misunderstanding the spirit of the DMCA. Both the letter AND the spirit are so bad that it needs to be fought. Should he be prosecuted, yes. The law exists, there's no getting around it, it doesn't do any good to just ignore the law, it needs to be repealed. Nameley because situations arise such as this, when some people want the law to be in effect and others don't.
Your point being? I'll answer your question for you, you have no point. I never said the law was correct, I never said I wanted it to stayt on the books, in fact the argument wasn't even about the morality of the law, it was about whether or not the two cases were the same. And they are not. The law was broken in Dmitri's case. Whether or not the DMCA holds up we'll find out.
Furthermore, I never claimed that Dmitri should be punished simply because the law is on the books, that's up for the court to decide. It's up to us, those of us that feel the DMCA is wrong, to help fight it. But that has NOTHING to do with whether the two situations are the same.
Yes, it's exactly the same. Except that Dmitri was arrested on U.S. soil, in the act of breaking U.S. law. I do believe that it's a bad law, but it is a law just the same.
Yes the given curcumstances... hmmm Given the circumstances that they fucked up and produced a dvd with a red tint, the quality of the disc is the best and most faithful in terms of reproducing the original movie.
Nor are they the silver bullet that is appropriate for all situation or solves all problems. Unfortunately, this is the attitude that's bred into kids in college, by professors who should know better. Such is life though, those that go on to actually be good coders, engineers, ect. will grow out of that attitude.
Also add that some drivers on the bridge will invariably attempt to drive on the underside of it, go over it backwords, ect. and the builders will to be to blame if it doesn't work as expected.
I'm the last person to bash any engineer for their work, but I get real tired of hearing how software engineers aren't "real" engineers.
Yes like the ultra-stable windows, versus that piece of shit Linux which always give me this blue screen and I have to reboot... or wait do I have that backwords;)
Sounds good to me. I was actually posting to the "the only thing you need to know parent". Doesn't really matter, those that are interested in this kind of thing will check it out, those that aren't will complain... something for everybody;)
Need is seaparate from want. Personally, I don't need to go and buy another book on the subject, when I was a kid and first getting into computers I couldn't afford all the books I would have needed (of course there was no web at that time either).
I don't think you're trolling, but there's no reason the information shouldn't be available in multiple places, especially places where it's free.
Except for those who may want to be in that position in the future, except for students who want to learn about it, except for children taking their first steps into becoming really good with computers. Except for ANYONE who doesn't want to be clueless about what's going on with something they bought, and why.;)

Actually Square was about to go under and Final Fantasy was to be their last game, hence the final, it ended up, basically, saving the company.

It all goes back to what each person likes.

In other news the governemt of Japan was suprised to realize that they could fit their entire population into a single football stadium. ;)

You are Chris Knight aren't you? I hope so I'm wearing his underwear.
Hehe
