  2. @home bytecap idiotic on Slashback: Bandwidth, Animation, Gruvin' · · Score: 4, Interesting

First of all, I would like to say that I am no longer part of the @home network (THANKFULLY, i'm part of AT&T, which has a usenet server with binaries that do 3 day retention and excellent completion and unlimited downloads of course).

To set a bytecap on their servers isn't exactly a good idea, throttling would be so much better, so if certain people were taxing the servers too much, they can be limited. I used to pull about 600KB/s(yes that's BYTES) on my local SF Bay Area server and loved it. I never exceeded 500 megabytes a day (mostly for anime) though. In fact, from what I've read and from what I've experience pre-AT&T-split, the news servers were never taxed, but it's possible that the network was at times (I seriously doubt it, but that's what they say).

Although I don't do massive downloads, I do know many people who are warez kiddies and rely on usenet for their fix. We're talking 10+ Gigabytes per day here by the way. They're going to get their 10+ Gigabyte fix whether @home caps the downloads on the usenet servers or not, the only difference is that they're going to get it from somewhere else. The result of this is a bigger strain on their INTERNET network. Before (double-checking with traceroute), when one accessed the news server, it would just use the local @home network, never leaving the internet. Now, I know a few people that have signed up with Newsfeeds (note: don't even consider these guys unless you're a warez kiddie, stay with giganews/supernews/easynews/newshosting, they go there because it's unlimited downloads at fast speeds but the completion is horrible, spread over 18 servers so you have to use special programs).

The warez kiddies are going to get their fix either way, before less bandwidth was used using the @home usenet server (no bandwidth going to the internet). Now they're getting it from college dorms and pay usenet services. Smart move, pushing the network traffic to the internet, where it costs money!

Why do the creditors want @home out of business?

Considering that one of the major shareholders is AT&T (broadband or parent company it doesn't matter), they MUST keep the service running anyway.

AT&T WILL obtain the hardware and maybe the people who keep the cable internet system running.AT&T WANTS @HOME TO FILE FOR CHAPTER 7 (liquidation, bubye). Why? If they kept @home, they would still have less control over the system and if they obtained @home's hardware when they make the new system it'd be cheaper (not to mention the same people to run the familiar system).

Then why don't they BUY OUT @home? Simple! @home has something like SIX BILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT. If AT&T bought them out, they would have to deal with that debt and do you really think the shareholders would be happy about a sudden 6 billion in debt? HELL NO! AT&T will let @home liquidate and pick up everything (people and hardware) dirt cheap (because no one else will set up a cable system in that area, they CAN'T AT&T controls it, thus they're the only buyer).

AT&T is playing a smart move here, and they probably have @HOME executives in on this too and have other cable providers notified (that's why they're all making "backup" plans, because if they really weren't going out of business, then why would @home tell them, that would make the CO's trust @home less!)

Sigh... just a stupid ploy for AT&T to get full administration to the cable internet system dirt cheap w/o paying any debts.

    Smart move AT&T.

If they decide to do anything different, AT&T execs are stupid for not doing this. ;-]

If you're unfortunate enough not to be living in the bay area, then call your local PBS station and try to get a bunch of people to pledge some money to show anime. Tell them to call up KTEH, afaik they're looking to form a co-op with a few other stations so they can get episodes cheaper. The problem with that idea is that the situation is different if you're a company ISSUING stock. If you are the one ISSUING, you're not getting money directly if the stock goes up unless you issue MORE stock.

For example, in the current market conditions, if you issued stock at 20 dollars each, then you would get 20 x all the amount of stock being issued. If the market conditions are bad though, and poeple are not willin to buy at 20, then it may be dramatically lower, like 8. So the amount of funding they get will also be lower. This has NOTHING to do with the stock going up. If the stock goes up after the IPO, (REGARDLESS weather the ipo was at a low price or high) the company can issue more stock, but not at the same amount as the IPO.

    Hope that clears things up
