I also have a M1300, but the argument against hybrids is very apt, BUT the M1300 is EXCELLENT with a keyboard too! There's a snap-on USB keyboard made by Motion Computing. What's good about a detachable keyboard is that you have the benefits of a convertable AND a slate. Keyboard when you need it or, when weight is an issue, you can shed off the 1LB keyboard and only have a 3LB computer. The only issue I have with it is the tiny weirdly-placed backspace key, but using it for a while makes it a non-issue after a month.

When using a tablet, THE biggest issue is weight. Nearly all laptops are heavier than the Motion slate (with the exception of the insane Japanese Sony). This is essentially a NOTEBOOK REPLACEMENT, which means it's going to be carried EVERYWHERE. A 5LB convertible is a big difference when you've got to walk 20 minutes to class.

And for those that claim that a pen and peice of paper is like a tablet, then they obviously haven't tried OneNote. OneNote allows me to RECORD lectures and all I need to do is highlight a sentence and it'll play back exactly what was said at the time the sentence was written. No need to synchronize between paper notes and a tape recorder :-D Looking over a scribbled chart/diagram afterwards saying "WTF IS THAT?!" is moot just by highlighting the diagram :-)

You do know that the swivel isn't the only way to combine a tablet slate and a convertible "notebook" style, right?

HP's and Motion computer have DETACHABLE keyboards, meaning that you CAN have the best of both worlds.

I would know, I have a Motion M1300 with mobile keyboard.

A detachable keyboard is very very nice, I can break out the keyboard for my social sciences where text notetaking is all that's needed and keep the keyboard in my backpack when I'm in a math class. If I need to draw a couple of diagrams/charts/etc side by side in my text-heavy classes, I could do that too :-)

Say what you will about the sucess of tablets, having handwritten notes searchable to prep for tests is happy-fun-good-times. Bringing a plain laptop isn't good enough for most classes, I'd end up bringing a sheet of paper along with it to draw diagrams, and because of that it fucks up my organization when looking over my notes later. Tablets keep everything ORGANIZED and searchable.

I really couldn't see some start-up company doing this on their own. There's some serious stuff in there, all the modern tablets have pressure sensitivity (the "button" is on the tip of the pen, not the screen like with palm pilots) and I'm pretty sure that Linux doesn't have drivers to support that last time I looked, so doodling or professional drawing won't work (Penny Arcade is drawn on a tablet, for example). Also there is very little integration with the tablet in slate mode (no keyboard), think of linux w/o using the command line . Linux without the convienience of power nor the UI integration of Tablet XP. We're talking about copying and pasting handwritten stuff between programs here, if you want to get indignant.

Tablet PCs have a LONG way to go with Linux, unfortunately.

Change your VESA settings to allow non-root. This isn't an MPlayer problem. Also, it'd be a good idea to try -vo x11 or -vo xv (xv works THE best, with translucent subtitles and all, W00T), those two drivers work much better. I think that thinkpad has a Savage card, which xvideo is supported. Try doing xvinfo in console and see if the card pops up. If not, try changing your xfree settings /w xf86cfg -textmode (?). If you get xv working, try "mplayer -vo xv -fs -ao oss -dvd 1 -slang en" which will play a DVD fullscreen with translucent english subtitiles. It should also be able to play DVDs and DIVX better since more processing is offloaded to the video card. If your DVD still skips, check if DMA is enabled on the DVD.

Incidentally, many people in alt.binaries.news-server-comparison (one of the places Jeremy hangs out) are very opposed to PAR files and say they cause an increase in bandwidth. I don't know if Jeremy's one of them.

An excellent idea would be to make a new format where yEnc and PARs are combined. Imagine this: get rid of RARs, PARs and SFVs altogether. Post a file as one big file and have 1% parity. Tbe parity will be for individual posts (not enire RAR archives like before). 1% is more than enough since a 500 message post will have 5 parity messages. Most incomplete files only have about 3 or 4 missed messages and the 5 will fix those INDIVIDUAL POSTS. If that isn't enough, a few more parities are generated.

I find this idea MUCH more important than silly nitpicks on implementation. Of course, this can eliminate yEnc from the face of the earth if this was implemented, simply because it makes downloading binaries much much easier and simpler.

I've emailed Jurgen about this, but his reason was that it'd make adding in this way too complicated for news client maintainers.

Those who want to push a MIME format should implement this and create a new standard, everyone will jump from the yEnc bandwagon onto this like they jumped from the UUE bandwagon to yEnc.

There are also many other side storylines, one of them being God and dealing with it, but imho human relationships is much of a bigger thing. It's similar to how Eva talks about how relationships between one another is important, but Lain takes a different approach and applies it to technology. HINT: Even though technology is such an important part of the show, it isn't praising everything technological ;-]

So it's not as the cliched ROBOTS/TECHNOLOGY == BAD, but much more, talking about human emotion and all that. See when Lain felt Alice's heartbeat at the end, which was the turning point of the entire show, when Lain is enlightened.

The parts that are up to debate are the Roswell aliens and Lain's bear pajamas. Some think it's a "growing up" type of thing, but I think it's more of a good thing,

Hope that helps you understand Lain. Rewatch it and you'll understand much more about the weird shadows and the power lines.
