this goes beyond normal marketing hype right in to the heart of blowtardary.
if by "no one" in its literal sense then they will fall short by probably 99.9999% of the worlds population.... you honestly expect me to be able to get off a plane in Columbo, Sri Lanka, and pay for a meal from a street vender with something that isn't Rupees or US Dollars? not going to happen by 2015 probably not going to happen by 2115.
if by "no one" they mean "no one in the western world" yeh um sure maybe by 2115... maybe... it's possible... I guess...
if by "no one" they mean "no one in the United States of America" meh.. maybe by 2020 at the earliest would be when the majority of people start using e-cash for more than, say, 95% of transactions by numerical volume rather than by value of purchases.
if by "no one" they mean "no one working for Pay Pal" then sure... all they have to do is on the 30th of december 2014 fire the 75% of their employees who didn't get the memo that wallets are passe... that would work.
fact is the only place this could possibly happen by 2015 is Singapore if they made it a law... now that would work...
and remember
if you outlaw wallets only outlaws will have wallets.
however if you insist on a laptop then I'd suggest you get a used Apple iBook... sadly not so light but pretty damn tough with their Lucite shell. If it's not already scratched up then tat it up some with some stickers and/or spray paint... make it less appealing to thieves.
get something Sealine Urban bag or get a sealine or equivalent roll top water proof bag that will either fit as a sleeve for the laptop (and just allow the laptop bag getting wet) or one that will fit the whole laptop gag in (though makes it harder to tote.
I'm borderline Apple fanboy but I do not like this... sites like think secret were always my first port of call when looking at my next few months of budgeting for possible new toys... err gadget... um I mean computers and peripherals.
If we had to rely on Apple's official PR we wouldn't know about what was coming up until it was already shipping.
given the general rule is "take a good show and ruin it with total shitville translation and voiceover" (cowboy Bebop being one of the few exceptions), and the all to frequent butchering of the plot (and frequent digital re imaging) to be as sanitised as all the other (American) crap that oozes from our tv sets no wonder..., when they watch it it's just to laugh at the butchery.
Honestly I don't even own a TV these days... I voted with my feet.
I'll just make this simple statement. blocking downloads of unlicensed anime is the business equivalent of shooting your self, not just in the foot, but in your head.
The sheer volume of anime released in such a wide and various number of genre is such that torrents and other hosting is about the only way you can get an idea of what will work out side of Japan. OK there are the sure fire hits like Full Metal Alc, Death Note and Bleach, but stuff like FLCL? Dead Leaves? Azumanga Daioh? who would have though those would have worked out side Japan??
And if the show works then it's these downloaders, the ones who've gone past the first couple of episodes and not gone (nope this is not for me) that are the first to buy the DVD's, the collector's box set, the manga, the official figurines, posters etc etc etc... and they'll probably still watch it on cable/fta anyway (even if only to see how much the offical english translation & voice overs blow.
what is this thing you call "kissing"... I don't remember that being covered in my CS course (must have been that lecture I slept through after drinking all night in the computer lab while trying to run "man woman" command
...of course the biggest assumption is belief from the public, from the media, even from with in many in the sciences that you need to produce some "one true final answer to [insert subject here]"... when the whole point of science is that each publication is the building upon work already done... OK so you make assumptions, someone else's work (possibly in another field) will test those assumptions, someone else will merge those two (or discredit one, the other, or both) and the whole cart keeps rolling down the road....
So it will still support my 5 year old 1GHZ TiBook? Sweet..... not that I really cared, - it's 5 years old and only gets used once in a blue moon - compare that to my 2 year old Toshiba tablet that gets used every day totally shat it's self with Vista (work's Tosh Tecra M9 runs it kinda OK though). Now if it hadn't supported my Dual processor G5 Tower I'd be totally pissed off.
first a personal aside - web 2? web smooo more like all this web 2 yammering just sounds more like web 1 beta before its corporate dot com boom.
well like DUH!!! these are our geek toys and you can't have them you plebs!!!!
more seriously I work in IT supporting an educational institute that teaches, among other IT related things - online business and marketing which requires academics to use real world examples and students to work on projects that produce examples (online video, web pages etc etc) yet the very same IT department that I work for and supports them it telling the school's administrators that "the academics only need 2.4GB of network/server storage, that they only need a couple of hundred MB of internet download quota per year, that they don't need web servers for anything other than hosting the intranet services and "corporate website" , routinely block sites like YouTube despite these being used in several units that staff are not allowed to purchase computers with built in video cameras (like many ACER and Apple models do) etc etc etc... no irony is lost in the fact that most of the IT staff have machines on their desk with web cameras their own server with a TB of unused storage, and unrestricted downloads because "we need it to do our job" and actually their right we do need it to do our job but we have to realise that these days THEY need these tools too.
so what we have is a small group of people in IT pretty much dictating to administration terms that cause very serious restrictions on what academics can teach, and what students can learn.
....lets face it it's not like the Wii was facing any real quality opposition. (and as for the argument of "so bad it's good" even that wears a bit thin after a few weeks)
1M UK pounds = $2.35M AUD oh hell yeh I'd have taken the money and crammed my little piece of peace breaker in their hands so quick their head wouldn't have time to spin....
like the original articles 1st comment said I'd bet good money that if they made the offer standing there with a cheque or a briefcase of cash the response would have been that 100% would have given up their mobile phone
I believe the US is getting a slightly longer wheel base version that the rest of us??
I'd get one except as a giging musician (Ampeg 8x10 Fridge? 3/4 Double Bass? na) and part time photographer (camera bags, tripods, light stands, flashpacks? na) it is sadly too small for my current needs... so I'll stick to the Honda Jazz (Fit? in US) for now
Anyway once you have one (and if you don't actually give a damn about fuel economy) and a few grand to play with whack in a Suzuki GSX1300R (Hyabusa) engine, call it a Smazuki and scare the living daylights out of any stock, so called, sports car:P
The sports models quite nice too - love to see one of those tricked out as a Smarzuki
...oooooh deja-vu....
most of those suburbs went years ago in our city, victim to infil medium desity housing (flatten the old houses build town houses and apartments sell each for 10 times more than the house you bulldozed)
I kind of miss them in their own kitchy way
back on topic - why not concrete lions WITH flashing LED eyes? now that would creep out a few folk f'sure
this is not that far from what happens here in most states of Australia where all second hand dealers have to be licensed under the pawn brokers act.
While we don't require draconian things like fingerprinting or any thing else so extreme you are required to supply what we call 100 points of ID (same as for opening a bank account or applying for a passport) usually needing 3 ID cards/forms at least one having to be official state/federal photographic ID (ie drivers license, passport) which the dealer has to make a photocopy (or photographic copy) of, goods must be registered with police via their online system with in 24 hours and held for at least 1 week before being released for resale.
Pretty much all the record shops here simply refuse to deal in second hand music as it's not worth their time and effort, I mean sure, dealing in say a second hand guitar no problems sure couple of grand, 20% commission no problems $400 for 20 minutes of work no sweat.... but same amount of work for a 5% to 10% commission on, say $10 worth of used CD's ? forget it...
And then there's the legal issues - my local music shop stopped dealing in second hand music after the owner got busted for buying (as a trade in) a CD single worth 50 cents as he (or more specifically one of his staff) bought it off of a minor (under 18) counter to the pawnbrokers act, she was 17 and 10 months old and the clerk only looked at the year of birth on her drivers license before OK'ing the trade in.
Cost - 1 day's lost income closing the shop to attend court, $400 solicitors and lawyers fees each for himself and the clerk, $1000+ fine, and had his visa refused (as a convicted felon) when he attempted to travel to the USA several months later.
this goes beyond normal marketing hype right in to the heart of blowtardary. ... maybe ... it's possible... I guess...
