One of my favorite sites for center-left opinion is CommonDreams.org While they do have some original content, a lot of their headline opinion pieces are copied in full from the original source and wrapped in the site's design template. If not for the small print identifying the original source, the article would look like copy produced and owned by CommonDreams.org. I wonder how they have gotten by so long without being served these notices... Or are they getting permission? (seems unlikely, as the opinion pieces are taken the same day they appear in print).
I can't remember that guy's name , but it just occurred to me that Microsoft could have paid him big $$$ to say that. Think about it... a highly respected member of the open source community says that OOXML is a superb standard! What a great way to garner support! Think it's not possible? We know that Microsoft heavily bribed all the banana republics that joined ISO as voting members.
Hell yes, and that's a Good Thing(tm). Because most assets in this country are held by the rich who got us into this mess in the first place; ergo, they should pay for it. Meanwhile, inflation will help those in debt (i.e. the middle class), and especially those who were suckered into subprime loans by making the debt worth less.
This is animal cruelty, plain and simple. Do you know how many embryos are going to be destroyed, and how many animals are going to be sacrificed to get said embryos, in order to do this ridiculous research? There are better ways to get stem cells people. I have mixed feelings about stem cells anyway... yes they're great for possibly fixing spinal cord injuries and growing new pancreai for type I diabetics but I fear that over time a rich elite will be able to live indefinitely with ready made clones from harvested stem cells. This research makes a frankenstein much closer to reality. Just what we need.. the rich living forever.
I RTFA and had the exact same thoughts. Half the article was talking about the cable and telephone companies being pissed at the FCC for bitchslapping them (from cable ownership rules and 700MHz auction rules). I happen to like those rules, because they benefit me, the consumer. Congress, being the pawn of those corporations, is obviously upset. UNTIL CAPITALISM IS ABOLISHED IN THIS COUNTRY WE WILL HAVE NO FREEDOM.
Exactly. The only people I know of that this will impact are domain squatters and spammers who try to buy as many (misspelled) variations on a domain name as possible. This price increase should actually help the internet.
You're probably trolling, but have you ever been to Mexico? I'd say the situation is almost the reverse, with the US having a "shitty corrupt government" and a poor standard of living. But you probably wouldn't know otherwise given the US's right-wing media and fascist school system. Get educated.
I always consider "amount of free time" as a major perk. This time translates into a number of other perks including: less stress, a happy marriage, and well-adjusted kids.
If a company like Google requires me to work 80 hour weeks, then it doesn't matter to me how many other perks they have. These extras are relatively paltry compared to the 2000 hours free time I get from working at a company requiring only 40 hours a week. But everyone has different prioritites, as the article notes.
And this is why the US should mandate 35 hour work weeks, like France did some time back. The French are at least as productive as we are, and do that with 60% of the work week and 6 weeks vacation.
Those are good points you make. Also, a judge may look at the commercial interests of the alleged infringer. A non-profit or educational institution will likely be given far more leeway in the raw amount of material copied. A student taking a 2-minute clip for an in-class commentary is different than a movie studio producing $200M blockbuster using the same clip.
As the Debian GNU/kFreeBSD project has shown, it is possible to port the Debian userland (including the excellent apt-get package management system) to other kernels besides Linux. I would like to see Debian/Solaris project come out of Ian's endeavors. If not that, then at least an upgrade of the current Solaris userland to make it more Linux-like.
You find it funny. I find it a little sad... It's sad that storage size in "layman's terms" is now related to hours of MP3 playback. A whole generation of people are not going to understand storage outside of the iPod universe.

A new record for Godwin's Law!! (I keed, I keed)
A more effective strategy is to start up a whole bunch of fake E-meter sales on eBay.

Anarchy comes to mind.

Either you're a crazed hippie completely out of touch with reality, or you're a troll:
Euro value 4/26/05 = $1.29
Euro value 4/26/07 = $1.36
Not exactly spiraling out of control. Total loss of value in two years = 5.2%, not half.
Cue all the pedantic asshats who absolutely have to point out that Moore's Law really isn't a Law... it's an observation.
Sounds like you have your own prejudices and to worry about.

John, is that you? Haven't you done enough trolling already?!!
