  1. Separate M$ /. section? on Microsoft up to Old Tricks Again · · Score: 3

Is there ever going to be a separate Micro$oft section on /.? It would be nice for the some folks to get their fix in one place, and have highly applicable M$ stuff show up on the "front page".

This constant new old news gets, well, old. But when I have the time, I definitely like the laugh/throbbing veins, depending on the story.

  9. Electromagnetic radiation on Linkage between Cell-phone Usage and Long Term Memory Loss · · Score: 1

Look at http://csep10.phys.utk. edu/astr162/lect/light/spectrum.html There is a chart showing the divisions of types of radiation (can anyone suggest a better one?). If you examine the user's manual for the Nokia 6000 series phones (big PDF file), you see that this cell phone uses 1.8x10^3-2.0x10^3MHz.

If you look at the above mentioned chart, you will see that these frequencies fall very low (high?) on the radio spectrum. You will also note that at these frequencies, the total energy is also very low. Also, keep this in mind, the natural frequency of water is in the Microwave spectrum, thus this is bad for you. Above the visible spectrum, the energies get pretty high: this is bad for you too.

In order to prove problems with cell phones, you have to convince people that listening to your radio (not even listening but just being in an area with a radio station), TV, cordless phones, and you name it, is not dangerous for you.

If anyone more knowledgable than can expound on this please do.

I do engineering in 3D using analysis tools based on CAD programs. Whether your WM is 3D or not does not make a difference to me. As someone mentioned before, it's always 3D information on a 2D surface (monitor screen). So a 3D WM or a 3D tool (like I-Deas) are in the same boat as far as I'm concerned.

What I would find revoluntionary is an actual 3D world where you could literally "walk" around a particular part of system to see how it fits. Then I could alert the designer to potential problems before hardware is made. In my business, you don't get to build many (if any) variations of the hardware. This is were 3D pays off.

As far as taking risks during fertile days, this is the beauty of it. You have control over what risks you want to take. With medicine, you depend on your doctor and other people you pay.

And a clarification, the rhythm method is different and is not reliable, since menstrual cycles vary in length. Thus, with NFP, you base your decisions on the symptoms and not on guess work. Unfortunately, people confuse the rhythm method with NFP.

Granted this method does not work for those that need sexual gratification on demand. But that's a whole other topic....

What would be more shocking is lobbying being illegal and then some Congressperson putting up a law for a vote that in order to make internet safe for kids, every web site author must have a license and follow strict guidelines for web page content otherwise lose the license.

Without special interest groups, laws like these can sneak through. I don't have the time to review every law and submit my opinions or concerns to my Senators and Representative. And they can't possibly have the background for every law to make an appropriate vote. Thus special interests who know the various issues better than most can take appropriate action.

What concerns me more is the price of special interests. That is moving representation farther away from the common folks.

Think about it, when you hear arguments over some law, who brings it to your attention, your congresspeople, or special interest groups making a big stink out of something?

There are many (that is, isn't not uncommon) student run projects developing, designing, building, and even managing small scale spacecraft/space instrument projects. Check out the Space Grant College and specifically, the Colorado Space Grant Consortium. There have been an increasing number of females involved here, I might add.

And I do not get too upset with general accomplishments of an all male team, but rather get upset at what are specifically advertised as an all particular-gender team. That is, I expect women to be able to do as much as any man would do. Making a big deal out a women doing something tells me that you didn't think they could accomplish the task. It's this mentality I dislike. Apologies, I realize my comment was a little vague.

Again, I'm glad to see this work. I can't wait until this level of work occurs in high schools. There are some high schools that are beginning to be involved in these projects, so there's encouragement.
