Crashplan's remote backups are encrypted with their key. If you want to be super paranoid/safe, you can also go with the plan that allows for your own personal key instead of theirs... but you better not lose it or you're really fucked!
Also the there is the ability to capture the CO2 right at the source and pipe it directly into the volcanic bedrock. Think pipes to ground vs smokestacks. Or a thing you attach to automotive exhaust pipes that you then have to empty at the gas station while you are refilling your tank. Etc.
I actually agree with the parent post... something is going on to make this drastic of a change. Normally I would agree with you and say everyone has their tinfoil hats on too tight but there definitely seems to be something else to this. Maybe not a conspiracy but... are they hemorrhaging cash? User base slipping away faster than they'd like? What? These moves have the scent of desperation. Why not wait for the gradual switch by folks via new machines, OS support expiration, etc.? I thought they had plenty of cash/time and inertia to do it. They are damaging their brand, losing any goodwill they have by forcing users over, and not to mention scaring any up-and-coming business into choosing different software/platform (the ones that didn't have an Enterprise version the could avoid the Windows 10 mess).
Well I am currently running VMware Fusion on my work machine and currently it is doing a good job. Luckily it is also running the Enterprise version of 7, so no upgrade to Windows 10 junk either. The performance is decent... still not as good when it was running Windows XP. Man, that sucker could fly!:D
The ability of reusing authorization codes is pretty bad. I am surprised it's not locked to the iTunes/Apple ID. I guess that would be the next step by Apple.... unless there is some reason that doing that would be a problem?? I can't really see why. Maybe it would effect free app give-away codes? Honesty don't know.
One can only hope. I want neither of them to win.;( The way I see it, if HIllary wins, the U.S. continues it's slow decline... obstructionist government for the next four years will get nothing done. If Trump wins I think we'll eventual end up in another war (rapid decline).
I believe they will, they are just waiting for when it is in the home stretch of the presidential elections with Hillary as the Democratic runner. Spring that sucker and *poof* there goes the 10% lead she had with Trump. Even if the charges don't stick and she is eventual found in the clear. Add to that her finally cracking with her tied in the polls and the legal battle... she'll say something nasty and presto... the deal will be sealed with Trump for President. She doesn't need to be found guilty... just enough FUD to confirm in most people's mind that she's not to be trusted.
I do have a Kindle. As a matter of fact, I have one of the ad supported ones... but I knew that when I bought it. It was advertised up front. Unlike *free* Windows 10 which I don't recall ever advertising that it has ads. That's the problem... and Microsoft knows it. Why do you think they waited to turn this feature on? I bet a ton of people wouldn't have done the *free* upgrade if they knew they were going to ads right off the bat. Imagine the ads there from day one... how do you think that would look? Crappy, of course.:P
Apple sucks in the rollback department for iOS. You install the 'latest and greatest' on your phone, find your phone runs slower... guess what, you can't rollback.
You'll look up where you'll be using the car to see if it's covered. I think for 85% of the folks, it would work fine for them: commuting the same paths to work, to the stores, to friends and family houses, etc. There would also be plenty of cases where an autonomous could wouldn't work well. [sarcasm]What?! A solution doesn't work for everyone?![/sarcasm]:P
It's just a geeky wish that we control the devices that we've bought.
But yes... this FCC rule is about taking away control. It looks like too many people have been modding their routers to do illegal things... use foreign frequencies in the USA, changing the broadcast power above what is allowed in the USA, etc. Instead of tracking people down and charging them, which would admittedly be a fool errand, they've proposed some drastic changes to stop the problem. These changes in my opinion do more harm then good and I will be contacting them and my reps. to try and stop this from happening.
The harder solution will be one that router makers will not like... make different routers for different countries. Or more specifically- one for the USA, and one for the rest of the world. The USA ones would be hardware fixed to the max broadcast power, and allowed frequencies for the USA.
A physical switch would be fine. The USB key has some pros and cons.
Pros: another hurdle on the physical access of device, not just anyone can update it, you could use the key possibly on other devices (PC motherboard/parts, car firmware, etc.), you could make copies of it for people you trust, you could use a USB key with more security (encrypted with fingerprint lock)
Cons: more complicated, someone could steal/copy your key, you could lose your key
I wish someone would make this stuff to have a consumer private key... say like a USB drive that is plugged in the router when you get it. Once you set it up, you pull the USB key. Anytime that the router needs to be updated, you insert your USB key, do you updates, and then pull it when you are done. Ta-dah! Private key to keep it from being compromised and owner has control. You could also add some consumer dummy protection: once it is setup, require the key to be pulled to operate (keeps people from being lazy and leaving the router unlocked), prompt people for the key only when updating.
I'm trying to remember which book it was (maybe it was Ender's Game?). Where the computer sometimes intentionally makes a ruling error in the game between the contestants. It was added to make the game more human/exciting/unpredictable. In the case of the story, it resulted in a win for the protagonist.
They don't want to set click to play as their default because of YouTube. Just think of how many you'd piss off as that as your default. Hence the "smart" playback selection.
The interesting thing on trying to find the number going the other way... I came across conversion numbers from previous years for Android to iOS. They have been slowly decreasing year after year. 2012 the rate was 25% (http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/11/11/more-iphone-buyers-switching-from-android-this-year-than-in-2012). 2013 the rate was 20% (http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/08/19/study-finds-20-of-apple-iphone-users-switched-from-android-in-past-year). This article says 16% in 2014. Judging from the derth of articles touting the rate the other way... would seem to indicate the rate from iOS is less than the rate to iOS... but that's far from proof.
I'd have attack both sides. It's not just the 'repubs.' that are causing the problem. Calling "bullshit" on a lot of it would help and maybe move the needle from political posturing to something productive/practical.
wouldn't it be Zuck rush? or maybe Zucker rush? ;)

Definitely this. Basically businesses are socializing the expenses and privatizing the profits.

and a hammer. Not so shatterproof I think. (I'm sure the caveat is 'under normal/everyday use.')
The new versions of Destiny actually removed some game content for those that did not upgrade: https://www.reddit.com/r/Desti...

Rick Santorum, is that you?

Bernie Sanders for prez and Elizabeth Warren for VP, that would be my dream ticket.
