I agree with the comment by clifyt... how did you get burned?? You do know Apple has a very liberal policy as far as new products go: if you bought right before the release they will either exchange or gibe you the difference in price. Sounds fair to me.
That's a horrible analogy - It just doesn't hold up. The trains are actually far more efficient than highways as a system, but since the U.S. spends more on cleaning roadkill of the highways than total funding for Amtrak they don't have enough staff or working trains so things get off schedule which causes the entire system to break. Just because the U.S. can't manage a switched system doesn't mean it is bad... try telling someone in France that the highway is faster and more efficient than the train!
Unmanaged networks are inefficient and pointless. There is no damage in routing things to avoid network congestion, but tiered networks are bad too. A tiered network is like a toll road that has restricted carpool type lanes, but the number of passengers doesn't matter - how much you pay in tolls does.
That is incredibly ignorant. I have known several autistic people and have befriended a couple and I have seen MAJOR improvements after just being patient and excusing their inappropriate reactions and eccentricities. Just recognizing when they say something funny or make an appropriate social reaction to an event and brushing off the rest without being critical led one kid I know to grow up and live a very normal life. He comes off as a little eccentric to people when they first meet him, but his autism makes him a bit obsessive which actually makes him a great worker in fields which require insane levels of concentration and attention to detail (like engineering) because he really gets into whatever he likes.
Autism does not mean stupid and does not mean broken. Autism comes in many different levels of severity and type and people with autism can be a huge asset to society, thus the time spent educating them in social graces is money well spent.
While I can't go into the details of a deal that I am aware of, one might want to note that the headline says "Share Revenue" and not "pay for ad-clicks".
I agree that they are being very selective with who they decide to pay, but there may be more to it than meets the eye. Promoting content creators who submit regular high quality videos to youtube certainly couldn't hurt them, and considering the importance of youtube to Apple's recent ventures may add some additional perspective as well.
I am surprised that slashdot found this story newsworthy... I thought that youtube has been pretty receptive to most vloggers who go to the trouble to contact them about revenue sharing.
First let me state that the Constitution says nothing about eminent domain. This was a bit of a loose interpretation of the 5th Amendment by the Supreme Court. Most of the founding fathers would take great issue with how land is seized by the government today if they were alive IMHO.
That aside, cost of moving is relevant because the Supreme Court ruled that the property owner "must be justly compensated". Justice doesn't involve throwing people out on the street with $5,000 when the cost to move is $15,000. Not to say it doesn't happen, just that it shouldn't. An interesting piece of fiction surrounding this issue (in an Australian setting) is the movie The Castle. I highly recommend it.
I agree with you from personal experience, I was just trying to sum up the article. Looking back at the article there were a few situations where xvid did horribly at low bitrates, but some it did better than others. I do agree with the article about WMV though. That codec has come a long ways since its early days. I still don't use it much as h.264 is still better, but I am impressed with how far it has come.
Apparently some people have no sense of humor. BTW I am back.
For those not wanting to read the article: Rated best to worst with default settings Low Bitrate go with XVID, DIVX, h.264, WMV Medium: XVID or h.264 depending on lighting and motion, WMV, DIVX High: h.264, WMV, XVID, DIVX
Maybe I'm just on the left side of the bell curve, but what technology exactly is effected by this ruling? What phones use these chips? I haven't seen very many qualcomm phones so I assume others are using their chips...
Here's my prediction: This is the prototype for the New Macbook Pro.
Go ahead and call me crazy, but this has happened before. Remember Intel showing of their mac mini look alike... well turns out it wasn't just a look alike but we didn't know that at the time.
There is more to it than just that too:
It has an optional e-ink screen on the outside - remember all those people shouting for an apple tablet? Well know it is an option.
What about that "connection-less charging pad, allowing the batteries of phones and PDAs to be recharged just by placing them on the notebook." I do recall apple mentioning something about a new phone... and forget the PDA and think updated ipod. It would mean you could wirelessly charge the ipod and it has bluetooth (apple seems to stick by bluetooth in its computers, so why not add the capability to ipods so they can sync wirelessly too and have wireless headphones (which there have been requests for.
It has a slim profile and is obviously being marketed to the hip asian market for ultra-thin computers (a market apple wants to reclaim).
It has insane battery life, flash memory, and Wifi - all things apple said they want in their laptops.
Mark my words, it might not be the exact computer they offer but I'd put money down it is a prototype.
I agree that they should keep a mixed line-up (when advantageous). They could easily offer different platforms for different solutions; intel might be cheap and great for laptops and the mac mini, but why not offer servers and workstations with these chips?
Unfortunately if they wait very long they may permanently lose the opportunity to do this because there are already programs coming out that are intel only: Joost, Adobe Premiere, etc. These vendors claim they will have support for the PPC computers in the future, but really - why would they want to go out of their way to support a "dead" platform?
Ironically most of these intel only apps are video related which is unfortunate given the advantages of altivec.
Wow. I took one look at the google labs page on these new "features" and thought "I'm going to get really annoyed if I ever try to use this". A simple usable interface with good results is exactly why I have loved google... if they go to a cluttered interface with pop-up menus by default I'm going somewhere else.

Actually youtube does have ads on their pages just not on the videos themselves: example of a video page that has ad revenue sharing enabled.

Tom Waits? Is that you?

Oh wait I'm "new" here.... let me go RTFA. Be right back.
Maybe I'm just on the left side of the bell curve, but what technology exactly is effected by this ruling? What phones use these chips? I haven't seen very many qualcomm phones so I assume others are using their chips...
Do what I did and install iscroll2. It is a nifty little program that gives your powerbook scroll and doubletap options.
Well I guess we'll never know now if it would run linux.
Wait... it's faster? What kind of pants do you wear?
Actually, using -site:.co.uk would yield much better results. Since he will then get everything except .co.uk instead of just .com
"For most Internet users, defending against phishing attacks is a top priority."
No, I disagree, I don't think it is a top priority for most users. Try pr0n.
Seriously though, it should be on the list... but let's be realistic.
Forget Heroes...
If Ze Frank were here he's say this interview is going to be:
The Worst. Fashion show. Ever.
I have a laptop. It has speakers. The speakers have magnets in them and they are INSIDE the case. I'm not too worried.
Here's my prediction: This is the prototype for the New Macbook Pro.

Well Duh! Anyone that's seen Jurassic Park knows that anytime you create a habitat of only females offspring will mysteriously appear.
By the way does the baby have a friggin' laser on its head?

So now someone can steal my identity and my credit in one card?
I would like to be the first to say this is a really bad idea.
Out of chairs Mr.B?

Waiting to rain?
Nonsense.
God's got a kidney stone.
Thanks for pointing this out! I guess there are so many other programs that fail to follow this that iphoto was the one that felt wrong.
