I think it is possible that this co-pilot, under normal circumstances and in a right state of mind would have been disgusted at the thought of killing so many people. But in the mental state of depression your emotion and empathy may cease to exist, maybe the passengers didn't even register in his thoughts when he took the decision to end his life, if that is really what happened.
It cannot be ruled out that he wanted to take all these people with him with malicious intent, but it can also not be ruled out that in that moment he was positively insane and didn't really know what he was doing.

His parents are great people and his sister turned out completely fine.

There is only so much influence parents have over their children. Friends, life, the environment and their individual character also make a huge impact. Many stereotypical attributes of a people are reflected in the language. German is precise, sounds harsh (to non Germans) and is not very open to humorous wordplay. Spanish sounds lighthearted and its easy to make jokes and talk funny using the language, English is full of ambiguity but concise and practical... I'm positive that language determines how we think and therefore also who we are. More than that, to a certain degree it determines what we can even think about.
