If I discovered that a publisher had repossessed a physical book, I would charge them with breaking and entering, theft, etc.etc..
They have no right to hack into my device and remove the copy of a book I bought either......they can rescind my licence, but I will still own the copy (weather it's a physical book or a set of bits on my device)
It's more like if Ford made cars and tires.... and only ford approved tires would work on Ford Cars......and then they told Bridgestone they could no longer make Tires for Fords....
..ahhh England where I buy fuel in litres, put it in a car rated in mpg, drive in miles down the road, under a bridge measured in meters, go to the shops and buy a litre of milk, go to the pub and buy a pint of beer....
...and all the most fuel efficient cars are apparently not sold in the USA?
The most efficient car on this is a hybrid (Prius or Civic) but many Diesel cars sold in Europe are more efficient than either of these, mostly because they weigh far less
It also does not seem to understand the concept of a "small car"... most of the small cars listed are medium sized, since when has a Subaru Impreza been a small car!
The kernel is no more and no less secure... it is the rest of the Operating system that makes it secure...
Linux/Unix apps have always assumed they have no access and cannot access outside the user directory, and generally do not have access
Windows apps are slowly following this but slowly....
The difference is that most security problems with Linux that are patched are minor, only a problem if your system is insecure in other ways, a rather large number of similar security problems with Windows break the system wide open even on a securely setup system...
The other difference is that a known fault in Linux tends to be patched quickly, on Windows it only gets patched if someone outside Microsoft knows about it and tells people.... otherwise it is buried
Without an ID card if I am walking down the street, a policeman can stop me (with reasonable suspicion) but cannot ask for my name and address, with an ID card he could ask for that, and get my name address and much much more
The Conservative-Liberal coalition is more liberal than Labour....
The Conservatives proposed an ID card before labour, introduced widespread CCTV originally, the precursors of a war or two (technically legal...but they would have done it anyway)
The Lib-Dems were against ID cards, against the war, against CCTV....
Together they moderate each others extreme policies....
The Tetris Company has no copyright to the Tetris gameplay or even the name.... the do have a trademark...which none of the clones infringe if not called "Tetris" (or a near variant)
Like all the movie companies being based in Hollywood... so they were far enough away from the holders of all the movie technology so thy could make movies without paying them....
This assumes the myth that Most Journalists actually produce anything.......since mostly they regurgitate other newsfeeds, and PR companies press releases all of which can be gained from other sites they are not adding any value...
Note: a few journalists still actually investigate a story, and a very few break a story... but these are very rare in the newspaper world nowadays, and certainly not any of Murdoch's rags...
People who buy the latest Apple/Sony gadget on day of release, no matter the cost....and they would never settle for a copy, or similar by another manufacturer....
PLATO not well known outside the US and SA?...another US centric story then
Roll on the anniversary of the BBC Micro - the foundation of the UK computing community.... and the making or Acorn/ARM which is still used in a *couple* of devices....
Does it work : Yes
Is there a better way : Yes
Did it take 46 *years* for anyone to find a better way : yes
If Knuth's mistakes take this long to spot then I still rate his code over most peoples

Do you want to tell that to Saudi Arabia, Rich yes, Democracy no

Metric or Imperial .... we use both ....!
Most of the world uses l/100km ...
It's a US thing mpg(us) and a UK thing mpg(uk)
note they are different .... !
10mpg = 23.5 L/100km /100km
20mpg = 11.76 L/100km
33mpg = 7.12 L
50mpg = 4.7 L/100km
I think most people would see there is a bigger step between 23.5 - 11.76 than 7.12 - 4.7 and so get it right ...
Having said that any car that does less than 30mpg should be a track car only ....

All the Badly coded legacy applications....are Windows Logo certified
To be a windows Logo app the *had* to write to C:\Program Files\
They had to keep everything in the Registry ...and many other things that are now "legacy" and "insecure" ....
When do the Certified for Vista apps start being accused of using the old security model, and being insecure
It's an OS to launch and run a browser, which does *all* the work .... and do as little as possible otherwise ....
It's competing with very little ....at the moment, except if you have a thin client desktop machine ?
Do you need to use Chrome to use Google - no
Do you need to use ChromeOS to use Chrome - no
Do you need to use Google if you use Chrome and ChromeOS ... probably not
Do Google have a large market share in browsers - No
Do Google have a large market share in OS's - No
No monopoly behaviour here ....
If they send unencrypted sensitive data over a public network they get everything they deserve ...
Private secure networks are there for a reason
Encryption is there for a reason
Tor (Anonymizing networks) are there for a reason
Use the combination you need depending on the data you need to send ....
Unfortunately the Absurd case and you are just an Idiot defence does not always work ...

Business as normal

Everywhere we look for life on earth we find it .... ...even the places that have been dismissed in the past as lifeless, we have since found life ....
the only requirement is water, but sometimes in such minute amounts that it was found *after* we found the life that depends on it ....
