  1. Question on FreeBSD 4.10 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'd like to get FreeBSD going on my laptop but I've had trouble with the cardbus ethernet adapters. Can anyone recommend a 16 Bit PCMCIA ethernet for use with FreeBSD? Too bad there are no sites like Linux-Laptop for BSD. As far as BSD dying, spend some time dealing with various non-responsive Linux package maintainers and then say who is dead.

Most people sound like crap wether they are in tune or not anyway. Save your money.

  11. stupid question? on Mars Rover Rolls And Turns · · Score: 1

I see all these posts talking about the lander, but then actually talking about the rover. The CNN story discusses that the rover is rolling off the lander. This would imply that the rover and the lander are 2 different things right? Anyway what I was wondering is if it would be a plausible idea to use the "lander" and airbags as a garage for the rover to take refuge against the weather to preserve it for a longer stay on the red planet. I think that it would be more interesting to see how long we could keep it up there and actually put it to some kind of use instead of driving it towards some hills until it dies. To me, that just seems kind of boring and a waste.

We questioned other club owners in the area, and they either deny or have no knowledge of any such threats. It was only this one place that this occurred. In the three years I have been working with CR systems I have heard this argument hundreds of time. It is however a valid concern, and here is my response. Use flood protection on challenge responses to prevent using CR systems as a mailbomb attack. Earthlink (my only corporate example of this spam prevention method) does this. Any system can be exploited if you are lax on security. Yes there is an amount of overhead but by nullifying the usefulness of spam completely on a global level the network activity would actually be reduced greatly. The autoreplies can have filters applied to them to prevent you from getting ones you shouldn't be getting. This will work one day when people will wake up and realize it is possible, quit being scared of tackling real problems, and stop bandaiding the problem with pattern filters.

  23. Re:All it takes on AT&T Moves Toward Mail-Server Whitelist · · Score: 1

I know they modded this as funny but it brings up a serious question regarding challenge response systems. How can two people with challenge response systems communicate without bouncing autoreplies back and forth forever. This question was answered me in so many words by someone from Earthlink in a previous slashdot article about Earthlink implementing a CR based spam prevention system. Send CR mails using a null envelope and (at least temporarily) whitelist addresses you send to and this problem will be prevented.

  24. Re:Oh well. on AT&T Moves Toward Mail-Server Whitelist · · Score: 1

Amen. My company just started using spamassassin for email filtering. The thing is they consider it an "acceptable level of risk", and that the incredible flood of spam just can't be tolerated anymore. Hope the mail that they DO lose isn't a really important one that costs the company big bucks. Personally I don't have any problems removing spam. I've said it before and I'll keep saying it. Whitelists and challenge response are the future of email. Yeah people may hate the hassle, but they hate voicemail options too and that is the most effective on telephone.
