Most of the world are nowhere near the sorry state that the US is in, so they can't really shut it down. Might have to find a new server to host the project, but that is pretty much it.
NSA (or someone else) could try to include a back door, but let's say that people review the changes, so it becomes known. Fork, bad mouth truecrypt, recommend NoBackstabNewTrueCrypt instead.
I really think that there are enough FOSS zealots here for this to happen, so I am not particularly worried.
Well, this sure ain't the market for Macs, and that is why I doubt that that Mac will be the dominant platform in 5-10 years. BRIC's GDP (Brazil, Russia, India and China in case you were wondering) is simply not high enough for there to be a market for Macs.
Microsoft on the other hand seems to have understood this and price their products accordingly. This strategy keeps people locked in, but it hardly creates any revenue. Not that Microsoft doesn't have enough money as it is, but I think it is unlikely that there will be a profitable market in the next five years to come. BillyG will continue to travel the world, spreading the glorious word of Micro$oft and the politicians fall for it.
Free and Open Source Software has a golden opportunity here, but it requires more than just being out there. What I believe is needed is a local movement with political backing. The software is there, but now we need to make sure that it is adopted.
Widespread use in Brazil, will surely affect the rest of South America and as the summary says: "which also tends to favor software that is not perceived as American." can't apply to only Brazil. The year of Linux has yet to come, but if it happens, then it wont happen because Americans decide that Microsoft is evil.
Actually, r600 documentation is expected in a few months. That can hardly be called catching up compared to how it has been earlier.
Using the gpu to decode h264 etc is something I see as quite possible, but it is likely that it is something we have to implement ourselves (something I think we are capable of).
Oh? really? Well guess what, I went with fedora core 5 over Ubuntu because I told myself that I wasn't interested in only an alternative to windows, I was after learning as much as possible (kind of the reason I installed Gentoo some months after)
And now I'm using Arch Linux, because I learned how to get around. (Not saying it won't happen with Ubuntu, but brown was a real turn off)
Unlike the bunch here that cries "It should be called KDE 4.0 Beta 1", I believe that it should be called KDE 4.0. It signals that the base technology is ready and it is time for adoption by a larger mass than what the release candidates had. Remember that KDE 3.5.8 is a matured product, KDE 4.0 is not. It doesn't happen over night.

At first I didn't really see the point. It is a laptop with windows XP. How was that news-worthy? Then I kind of remembered that vista is the new ME and it seems a lot of people think so too.
It is Qt4 that makes KDE cross platform. The Koffice that is in development (v2) uses Qt4. So Koffice on windoze will be when it is done. (devs said something about during the spring)
No. the wear is leveled out over the whole drive so you can partition however you want to. If only to serve as some mental map like: "I want root partition to use this much space, and the swap to have this much, and then some for my document etc"
You know there are other alternatives. I'm actually quite fond of koffice. You should give it a go. Using Qt, instead of implementing drawing capabilities yourself, seems at least sane and it's a lot faster.
EFI does a whole lot more than what I want it to do. A whole lot more than it should do as well. Kind of the same reason I don't want anything to do with things that have a TPM.
Now if only we could have larger bios chips, then having a linux kernel on one makes sense.
