Except that you are making a very flawed assumtion: that most people care about the Acid2 test.
People care more about familiarity than some aritrary (in their eyes) standards. IE is familiar, and Opera has some wierd UI conventions when you are coming from a Windows perspective. Let's not forget, that as of about a year or so ago, Opera had to be paid for unless you wanted to endure some silly ad banner. Opera is a very good browser, but if it were really *that* much better more people would use it. I know it's a good browser, yet I use Firefox. I just don't like using Opera.
We, as web developers care immensely about web standards (or, we should), just as road engineers probably care immensely about grades of asphalt. Why, I'd bet there's some standards body akin to the w3c that sets forth standards for asphalt (let's call them the ASS, or the Asphalt Standards Society). However, it would be absurd for them to start doing PSAs to encourage people to drive only on ASS certified roads. Why? Because who the hell cares about the asphalt they drive on? If it's safe and doesn't kill too many people, then nobody really gives a crap.
Informing people about the Acid2 test would elicit a whole lot of "Nice. Who cares?" If Opera is going to compete, it won't be by informing people about its standards adherence.

Lawmakers would create real headaches for users if they mandate than Windows ships with NO browser.
It's one thing to criticize, but what is the answer here? Really? I'd like to know. As a web developer I would love to see IE dethroned. But what has always been lacking is a real solution to the problem of how to do so.
"Is this just a sandy vagina move, or do they have a point?" Now, *there's* an expression I have never heard. Care to explain that one?

Often times I agree with the general opinion around here. But even when you agree with something, you see people who agree with you for the wrong reasons, which is the very essence of groupthink. Another good reason to create this pseudo: maybe you hold a certain opinion about something despite knowing that your opinion is somewhat flawed, or maybe you are at least aware of and find merit in the counterarguments. I use this account to argue against my own perspective sometimes. I guess maybe it's the mental exercise. Maybe it helps me to deal with cognitive dissonance when I can disprove my own beliefs about something. But it certainly keeps me sharp trying to defend a position that is not my own. It has actually been mind opening, kind of like debate class when you had to argue for something you don't agree with.
I guess one other fringe benefit was that I got to trade insults with Arapahoe Moe. He is someone who trolled my real account, so I started unleashing the most insane, random, and vile insults I could muster up. You should read some of our flame wars, I still do when I need a laugh. They are hilarious, both of us came up with some good insults. We did that behind the play, so to speak, so we never really got modded down for it. It was great fun, and when I thought I would kill this account off I told him it was all in jest and made him a friend.
But why the pseudo? I saw fit to create a pseudo so my real account wouldn't have a split personality. There are no/. policies that I am aware of that prohibit more than one account, and I have never modded my own account. If I am trying to assume a different role, then a new account seemed justified.
But then I started to get modded down for saying things that weren't really incorrect. I started getting modded down for stuff that merely went against the grain, stuff *I* don't think was poorly argued. And then I saw the guy (whose post I replied to and pointed to in many of my rantings, James Rose or something) who posted absolute drivel and got modded to +4 insightful. It was absolute crap, and his sig was bumper sticker philosophy all the way. So I lashed out and told him what an idiot he was and got modded down while his inane babblings got modded up. It kind of came to me that even when reading/. even at +3 or higher, you still get the line noise that adds nothing to the discussion. It's just newcomers parroting the same old trite arguments everyone has already argued. It's karma whoring, but it's more. This is supposed to be a place that we can go to learn stuff, as you posited. And yet with total crap that gets modded up, that becomes difficult. So I decided I would rant about it for a while.

I haven't posted much with my real account as of late. I just enjoy seeing how darn angry people get at my posts. Yes, it's line noise that people like you have to deal with, people who have been interested in things I have said in the past. Sorry for that. One way to fix this: I think Slashdot should give IQ tests to all would-be moderators. That would ensure most of the ramshackle pseudo-intellectuals who get mod points would be replaced by people who can actually read the moderator guidelines and adhere to them.

I think it's time to kill off Taco Meat. You might be surprised to know that I am not "a National Indian working for MSFT." It has been fun trading barbs with you, but I guess I cannot effectively troll if I am down to a -1 starting score. We had some good times, and I still read some of the insults that we have traded and laugh out loud. I wish you would have kept it going, though, the captain D stuff did get a little monotonous.:) I made you a friend before logging out, since I hate it when people make me a freak and then never come back. Besides, I was having fun with you anyhow.
I enjoy posting serious stuff to this site, and I do it often under my real account. But it's also fun pushing peoples' buttons. Trolling is fun? Sure, when done intelligently! The people who post the gnaa and frist psot stuff are boring and unoriginal. But posting semi-plausible stuff and watching all the wannabes jump on it, or just randomly insulting someone...well, that's fun! It's even more fun to post something and have other people get modded down for replying to it. Rope-a-dope, as I like to call it. I know...not entirely original. But it's still funny.
The post that I made that started this whole thing is a perfect example of moderator abuse. That was actually a serious post, it got modded insightful, then troll or whatever it got modded as. I kind of figured posting here to complain about it would result in what it resulted in. At least I went out with a bang and got three, count em, three dopes to bite and get modded down. Hahahahahahaha! Without sounding like a sap, Moe, I am glad you didn't get modded down. You just got yourself to positive Karma, it'd be a shame to lose that.

Yep, I'm hanging it up. This is probably Taco Meat's last post. But I'll be back...thinking of a new nick even as we speak. And at least I went out with a bang. Here to roping more dopes!

I have been the victim of clueless moderator abuse. Mod this post as informative to right the wrong! As a result of two instances MODERATOR abuse my Karma has been rendered bad, which means my default score is 0. This means that I have no voice here. I am trying to do this the right way and avoid creating a new account. If you hate injustice, then at least mod me to 1 or 2 so that I can get my voice back. If I have to create a new account just to make contributions, you can bet that I'll use this account to troll everyone else (because if I am going to be labeled a troll, I might as well have some fun), and that will just make for more line noise here. I'd like to avoid that.
Someone modded this troll? WHY? I was not trolling and you know it. I get modded down because I don't go along with the groupthink and automatically agree with everything that criticises MSFT?! What gives?
"Kinda surreal?" Does a horse ride a cantalope? Nay, for the pickles are singing!
Sorry. Please pass the ketchup, I think it's going to rain!
I sometimes do this when I see the word "surreal". Anyone like canasta? And why is that sausage reading poetry?
Thanks for taking the time. As for me, I'll be OK after I unsnaggle the loopswitch. Avast! Several pairs of pants have gone missing, and I WON'T be held responsible! Gah!

People complain about trolls, but the REAL line noise on slashdot comes from the posts modded +4 or +5 that contribute NOTHING to an intelligent discussion. You can't filter that out, and even if you have your thresholds set high, you still see all the stupid stuff that you've already seen. That's why digg sucks and will never be anything but a place for 1338 high-skool haxx0rs. And it's happening here. So I used this account to call shenanigans on sucky posts. I getted modded into oblivion for pointing out truth. I guess that's how it goes. Most of you are a bunch of mindless sheeple.
You know, I once suggested that IQ tests be given to moderators to separate the wheat from the chaff. I think that wouldn't help. I kind of like having idiot moderators. MORONS! DOPES! Bring it, tubers!

One way to fix this: I think Slashdot should give IQ tests to all would-be moderators. That would ensure most of the ramshackle pseudo-intellectuals who get mod points would be replaced by people who can actually read the moderator guidelines and adhere to them.

on second thought...
:) I made you a friend before logging out, since I hate it when people make me a freak and then never come back. Besides, I was having fun with you anyhow.
I wish you would have kept it going, though, the captain D stuff did get a little monotonous.

BANG!!!

I hate to have to do this, but...
What gives?
"Kinda surreal?"
Does a horse ride a cantalope? Nay, for the pickles are singing!
Sorry. Please pass the ketchup, I think it's going to rain!
I sometimes do this when I see the word "surreal". Anyone like canasta? And why is that sausage reading poetry?
Thanks for taking the time. As for me, I'll be OK after I unsnaggle the loopswitch. Avast! Several pairs of pants have gone missing, and I WON'T be held responsible! Gah!
what does your sig mean? I cannot make any sense of that.
