  1. No Fans on Smaller Than The Mini PC, The P4/2400 Micro PC · · Score: 5, Insightful

The main thing im looking for is a PC of this size that requires NO FANs. Go ahead, slow it down to 700mhz or less. Thats plenty of speed to run a head-less http, ssh, mail, ftp server. Ive got a Pentium class 166 that is doing everything I need without making a sound and I love it! Its getting a little old and Im looking for a no-fan PC (Including no cpu fan). By the way, the Seagate Barracuda IV IDE drives are extremely quiet. Its the only moving part in my system.

No no no. you've got it all wrong. The reason people should be warchalking is to mark OPEN nodes. Nodes that belong to groups like Personal Telco Project in Portland, OR, or Seattle Wireless, or Austin Wireless. These nodes are MEANT to be used for FREE by the PUBLIC. Thats why people should warchalk. Thats why there are two separate symbols, a closed circle for closed networks (meaning stay away) and an 'open circle' for open networks, saying go ahead and use it.

GSM is all about interoperability. Perhaps you are describing the fact that a cell phone company can 'lock' a phone to their service, so you cannot get a cheap phone on a service plan and then sell it to someone else on another network. Otherwise any GSM phone should work on any GSM network. Voicestream has long ignored the Ericsson t39 and t68 - yet when I bought a 'unlocked' t39 off of ebay, I inserted my SIM card from my old phone and the t39 worked immeadiately.

The fact is that all Palm devices and the new 3800 iPaqs have built-in connector for the SD card standard. I think the PDA market will pump the SD card standard to the top of the market. My next MP3 player (well okay my first mp3 player :) must have an SD slot so that I can load it up from my PDA. Or maybe my PDA itself will be the MP3 players.

  15. Re:But Bluetooth does nothing I want to do on The Phony Conflict:802-11 & His Pal Bluetooth · · Score: 1

Dealing only with technologies available today, I would say putting GRPS in the laptop is reinventing the wheel. The laptop will have bluetooth/802.11. The form factor of the cell phone will keep it viable for at least a year or two, and modern GSM cell phones all have GPRS. Using bluetooth between the laptop and the cell phone for data access makes good use of existing hardware.

I could see doing away with the cellphone if something just as portable has access to a GSM/GPRS network, such as a PDA. Then bluetooth headsets become pretty cool. Beware devices such as the trio which have no device-to-device communications - everything goes through the GSM network where it will cost money. I think that palms talking to palms or other devices without the need for infrastructure such as cell towers, will become increasingly important. My own interest is multiplayer games.

What if you were driving down the road on Tuesday, after getting a full dose of WTC news on the radio, and you're shocked and feeling blue, and the radio comes on with 'what a wonderful world'. Or say you have the TV and the radio on and you're looking at ground zero and people are running for their lives, and Louie is saying "I see friends shaking hands.....sayin'.. how do you do". The song would seem out of place and radio station would seem heartless.

Then they give excruciating detail as to how many credit cards they take and where you can mail payment. It has all the signs of an infomercial or simply a scam.

Now that I understand a little more about who they are, I can see why my radio station is constantly playing this tacky ad. I would still not give them any money and donate to the red cross directly instead.

Why RTCW feels like SPR: The lieutenant class character can call in an air strike over the radio just like Captain Miller (tom hanks). The troop transports and the huge metal X-shaped things on the beach are exactly the same. Using the sniper rifle makes me feel like Private Jackson (too bad there is no 'kiss my dogtag' action). Being a medic with the syringe reminds me of the morphene shots administered by medic Wade.
