  1. Native Widgets! on Open Office 2.0 Beta Candidate Released · · Score: 4, Interesting

    It's about time!
    (From TFA)

Native system theme integration (native widget rendering)

To enhance integration of OpenOffice.org with the underlying operating system, all user interface elements (such as buttons and scrollbars) will have the same look as those used in most other 'native' applications for that platform. OpenOffice.org will react on-the-fly to changes of the desktop theme, so when the user changes the desktop colors or theme, OpenOffice.org will adjust its own appearance to match.

Native system theme integration will be available for Gnome (version 2.4 or higher), Microsoft (R) Windows (including XP and future versions), and KDE (version 3.2 and higher) desktop environments. On Windows XP the 'Windows XP Style' must be chosen under Settings - Control Panel - Display - Appearance to achieve the correct look.

Theme integration will be the default for desktop environments that support it (listed above). Systems (for example, Windows 98/ME/2000, CDE) that do not support it will see no visual change in OpenOffice.org. On supported systems OpenOffice.org will always adopt the theme of the system and cannot choose not to do so.

Why don't they just make it obvious you're visiting an IDN? Similar to how they handle SSL sites, the location bar background turns yellow. Maybe for IDNs, they can make it red and flashing or something similar, so it's obvious to the user that something may be wrong. Maybe they could check and see if there is an equivalent looking domain name in english and then making it red and flashing to let the user know that it may not be the site they think they're visiting.

There just seems to be other ways to handle it, since it really is more of a 'user beware' issue.

When I fix someones computer, I tell them that they have to follow my rules inorder for the 'warrenty' on my tech support to be valid and they include:
    1) Never open Internet Explorer again, use Firefox.
    2) Never open Outlook Express again, use Thunderbird.
    3) Use ZoneAlarm and don't allow 'random' programs to access the internet and don't allow anything to act as a server.
    4) Schedule weekly virus/spyware/adware scans and update the definitions before scanning.

Failure to comply with these rules (which I tell them I can verify if they have been following the rules), will void the warrenty on my service and result in an additional charge if they require additional support. Harsh, but I don't get too many extra support calls :).

I too have been debating about this issue and haven't decided if I should wait for tuxgames to release their version so my purchase will be definitely a linux purchase or just buy the windows version in the store and download the linux client. Tuxgames hasn't released their version yet, and for the US it will be 5-10 shipping after they do release so I'll probably end up having to wait 2 weeks that way or 20 minutes to go to store and buy + download linux client.

I've tried the alternate browers, and they are CRAP

You're quite right, that's actually what one of my coworkers said. He had got tired of IE popups and security problems and I mentioned he could try Firefox. He liked the tabbed browsing and the popup blocking, but he didn't like the pluggin support (actually having to download plugins when most of the necessary ones are installed by default on IE such as Java). Also, our internal bug management system has a web frontend with lots of java that would randomly crash Firefox. If it was any other page, it would probably be okay, but we probably spend 80% of our web time on that page tracking bugs, modifying bugs, etc and having it crash so often (about every third time it was loaded), he gave up. Couple that with the fact that the other 15% of the web time he is on a web based conferencing system (WebEX) that uses ActiveX controls, it just became too much trouble to use Firefox and just switched back to IE.

Granted he did say it would give it a shot at home where he didn't need the Java and ActiveX as much, but I doubt he actually did. It wasn't the feature differences (he liked those), just the compatability differences.
