I hate the term "X Killer" where X is some piece of hardware or software. It sounds so stupid. Headlines of articles and blogs six months ago were like:
"GPHOHNE......... NEWIPHONE KILLAR?"
Every time I saw one of those I wanted to punch a baby in the face. The iPhone wasn't out, and (at the time) no one knew if it was going to be uber successful or another newton. We didn't even know if the iPhone was going to be successful and there were already iPhone killers coming out RealSoonNow. Not only that, but the gPhone (if thats what it even ends up being called) was not as "real" as it is now, because the rumor mill had only just started turning its googley gears. And yet just because some company is coming out with some new thing, it is going to be the "next big thing". Every couple weeks a new outlook killer, office killer, iphone killer, ipod killer, cheerios killer*, etc.
Please, for the love of god get rid of this phrase, every time I read it I just want to vomit all over myself with disgust.
I used to use Azureus until I noticed that it was often using as much as 120+ mb of ram. I don't use any of the features of Azureus besides the actual downloading capabilities, so I decided to look for a lighter weight torrent client and found Transmission. The highest I've seen it in terms of memory useage is about 25 mb of ram, and the interface is much much simpler, so I much prefer it to Az.
Though I do think that the iPhone is a big deal, I would agree that in relation to this particular press release, who cares about the iPhone?
The real news was that for the first time ever, Apple sold more than 2 million macs in one quarter. And not only did they break the 2 million mark, they shattered it by an additional 160,000 (2.164m sold).
Say what you want about the proprietary nature of hardware and software or DRM that is just as much a part of the Apple as it is Microsoft, but that is irrelevant to the big picture. The quarter after quarter sales improvements that Apple is getting is proof not only of the growth of the personal computer market, but also that people are finally sick and tired of Windows enough to switch to an alternative OS. Though Apple probably is going to get the majority of switchers because of its name and the "Halo Effect", this also means that Linux will be getting more mainstream attention simply because it is a Windows alternative. All the software and hardware companies holding off from developing for only the windows platform are going to be left out in the cold or will have to adapt real quick once they realize the momentum of this movement.
I never got why people have so much trouble making up and remembering long passwords. I'm going to assume everyone here understands leetspeak, and enjoys something (i apologize to all the chronically depressed, i'm not trying to be an insensitive clod).
If you like music, use lyrics and translate them into leet. Example: WelcomeToTheJungle becomes W31c0m3707h3Jung13
If you like movies, use famous quotes and translate them into leet. Example: FranklyMyDearIJustDontGiveADamn becomes Fr4nk1yMyD34r1Jus7D0n7G1v34D4mn
If you think your funny, use jokes and translate them into leet. Example: ThisWebServerIsASeriesOfTubes becomes 7h1sW3b53rv3r15453r13s0f6ub3s
If you have need a password for root on/., use the tagline and translate it into leet. Example: NewsForNerdsStuffThatMatters becomes N3w5F0rN3rd557uff7h47m4773r5
All these passwords are extremely easy to remember, and if you have a standard translation method (ie: 1 is always I and never L) you will prevent confusion that could lead to you forgetting your password. For added protection add symbols like Pipe for L or ? for Q.
The "Halo Limited Edition Xbox 360's" or whatever their official name is are the end of all these problems. For the most part the problem has been fixed on the newer systems from what I understand (they have better heatsinks), but the halo xbox's are the first to use the Falcon chipset and have a 65 NM processor instead of a 90 NM processor.
Assuming that what I read once at Ars Technica (that a dual core from 65 NM to 45 NM is 10 degrees C and 10 Watts less under load (at the same clock)) extrapolates perfectly from an X86 dual core to a PowerPC tri core then the difference in produced temperature should be 15 degrees C. Unfortunately, it's only on the halo limiteds AFAIK as of now, but eventually it will seep down to the Elites and Premiums the same way HDMI did.
If the boxes are getting cleaned up from Storm, then they have all the newest updates on them, don't they?
It was my understanding that when Storm infected a PC it downloaded and installed all the security updates for windows. If only 10% of the PC's originally infected still haven't been cleaned up and the apex of infections was 15M, then 12.5M boxes that might otherwise not have had the updates now do.
Hmmm, I'm guessing the release coming now, and not months ago, had something to do with Leopard not being ready.
You can say "If HURD 1.0 had been released right after Vista it might have got some extra users", but that doesn't mean the developers can just decide to finish and release HURD 1.0 whenever it plays well against another company's release date.
Exactly. And besides, now that Vista SP1 is coming out (relatively) soon, we will all be able to hear about how Leopard "Just Works" while everyone else complains that SP1 doesn't fix all their problems.
Parallels is more MS centric in terms of capabilities in the virtual machine. I was thinking about getting it for MS/Linux in OS X but after reading how it somewhat ignores Linux compatibility, I decided instead on getting VMware Fusion. Which, btw, works great.
Halo 3 will bring MS into profitability, not necessarily because of console or game sales, but because hundreds of thousands of people experienced Xbox Live when they bought halo 3. Like 2 days after H3 came out (at least the highest I saw personally) was 1.3 million people playing halo 3 at the same time. Now that all those people have tasted Live, it will spur sales of the service, and at $50 a year, thats bank for MS. And that is not to mention games like TF2 also enticing people to Live.
Thats where MS will make 1 bajillion profit a year from.
but how are they going to handle the distribution of 3rd party app/updates?
If the third party applications can be downloaded/installed/updated through iTunes, thats fine. That being said, a real killer feature would be to provide an app where (over wifi/celltowers) you can search or browse for specific applications and download them through the wifi/celltowers. Though that would just be awesome, what would make that feature above and beyond would be if then the phone's OS would then keep track of the app's installed and provide updates as the apps go from X.0 to (X+1).0
If google starts banhammering what it wants left and right, people won't use it. Google got to where it is by being the best. If they stop being the best, something will replace it.
Maybe a car analogy will do better. If Ford/GM/$carcompany became a near-monopoly by making cheap, sexy, environmentally friendly, near perfect cars, then began making really shitty ones, people would stop buying their cars.
What websites do you go to most often that aren't slashdot?
I personally am a fan of ArsTechnica. What it lacks in sheer number of stories compared to Digg or in the discussion element of Slashdot, it makes up for with (imo) very well written, informative articles.
how so many people think nuclear is not a valid solution to the energy crisis.
See Here
France gets somewhere around 70-80 % of their power from nuclear. You never hear of any nuclear accidents in france, be it waste seepage into water, reactor meltdowns, etc because there aren't any. We don't have to be American pioneers and reinvent alternative energy when today the most viable alternative energy source could provide us with a significant portion of our energy within a decade or so (if done right).
Mabye in the future we can further invest in solar and wind and all the rest, but we should be more energy independent than we are now, and nuclear technology is here now, why dont we fix this problem. now-ish?
...but not from xp to vista, their going from 98 to xp.
All the software that the hospital my dad works for uses for their bookkeeping and accounting is all DOS legacy stuff. Only now, 5 years after xp came out, are they finally upgrading.

Ever played Pikmin?
Only on
Oh yea, I forgot to mention that company1 has to be Microsoft, or it's a brilliant move.
How Appealing indeed.

gah! 15m - 1.5m = 12.5m only for extremely large values of 1.5m.
For normal size values of 1.5M the result is 13.5M.

I saw "take a hit" and wondered why /. had an article about gamers playing stoned, only to RTFS and feel like an idiot.

Think synaptic, only for the iPhone.
"Blog Action" an oxymoron?
Wouldn't 4 X 4Tb drives be more like 9TB?
It makes me mad that all the hard drive makers failed 3rd grade math.

Netware confirms it: Netcraft is dying.
er... wait a second
I suppose after Intel gets charged we should get to work on preempting the AMD monopoly then.
yes. that sounds like a great idea.

"Genuinely useful" is a bit relative, but yes, I guess that is what I was getting at.
