What the hell happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? Yes he is an insane motherfucker, yes he bought books about murder trails, but that still doesn't prove anything.
Also, knowing that he is a programmer, he doesn't think like must people do. That makes him look crazy. But it still doesn't prove anything.
The US legal system seems more and more broken, and if he is sentenced to jail without further evidence, it just proves to me what I thought all along.
I am not saying that he is innocent, but I am saying he should be treated like he is until he is proven guilty!
Who modded this troll? The US constitution is dead. The P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act directly contradicts it on many points, and the Habeas corpus has been suspended.
On topic: It is great that somebody is standing up against the RIAA, and I hope she can reduce the ruling to a more humane level. Taking $10000+ per song is absurd.
Here are the things Google are missing to become like Microsoft:
1. Screwing customers
2. Forcing bad products on their customers
3. Participating in anticompetitive behaviour
4. Having a monopoly
5. Bribing their way through standardisation processes
6. Giving away pay-software to create vendor lock-in
7. Produce horrible DRM that only affects those who actually pay
8. Have a chair-throwing jackass as CEO
I would like to use MS' idea, but have somebody, anybody, else implement it. A new language is okay, as long as Microsoft stays out of the process of making it, since they have extreme interest in creating vendor lock-in.
If Microsoft finds some way to put XP on those laptops (through governments, giveaways or otherwise), I would like to see the computer world's reaction.
The XO is designed with both hardware and software specially built for each other. I would bet that even if MS could make XP run on it, it would take ages to make all the hardware features work (mesh, changing resolution display, etc).
But the real question is: How would people react. They *know* that XP runs worse on those laptops, and that Microsoft's only intent is to make the used to Windows. Would the world really let that happen? EU would surely react to such a monopoly behavior.
I just hope that Microsoft doesn't succeed here. XO is one of the long term chances that Linux have to make a real hog at Microsoft's desktop dominance. With the source code function, the XO would also make an army of competent programmers that could help destroy the MS monopoly.

Yep, we do. I built myself a new desktop instead of buying a laptop just recently. I was going to get an Ubuntu powered Dell Laptop, but since i can't buy it here in Norway, I just didn't feel like getting a laptop at all.

"So this is how liberty dies. With thunderous applause." - Padmé Amidala
This pretty much describes the situation in the US today. People are happy to "give up liberty for freedom", which is really just giving up freedom for nothing. There are no way that any group of terrorists can ever do any major harm to the western world. The media has blown it out of proportion. Terrorism has at most killed 3000 in a year in the US. it is insignificant compared to other death rates, for example cancer or traffic accidents.
My solution: Every computer retail store should inform how much of the price is Windows tax. For example: $500, where $150 is Windows Vista Bangtastic. And you should be able to choose not to accept the licence when you buy it, and they will remove the activation CD, so you can't activate it.
It will make XP slower and it will feel more like Vista. So everybody will go "hey, now the difference is so small, I could just upgrade and get DX10 anyway".
One of the biggest problems is the corporations using Windows only. Since Active Directory and Exchange are de-facto standards, Windows is going to stay in most corporations in many years ahead. I am sure Vista will make some of them reconsider, but it is not enough.
Many people want computers that "looks like the one I use at work", and therefore uses Windows. Together with poor driver support for webcams and wifi, and lack of games, we can see that Linux is not going to take over as the mainstream OS just yet. But the fact is that if Windows 7 "does a Vista", Linux will pass 10% in few years.
If Windows 7 really delivers most of what Microsoft promised for Vista (WinFS++), it will take longer. But Linux's market share will keep raising for many years to come. And as many people have said before, Linux is developed at least twice or trice the speed of Windows.
I feel sorry for you Americans where the government is fueling the fire. This is not the case over here in Europe.
As you have seen in the EU vs. Microsoft case, the governments over here really do care about the people, not the corporations. This is mostly because bribing politicians is in fact illegal in many European countries. The same applies to the recording industry. A good example is the case where Apple are been pressured to start selling DRM free music (and they did). Here in Norway they were threatened with total blockage from the Norwegian market if they didn't at least try to convince the recording companies to release DRM-free music.
This is when Mono main developers should move to Europe, and stay protected from Microsoft.
Then just copy/paste/rewrite at free will, and be protected by the EU. They have already told Microsoft to open up their libraries, so I don't think they will let Mono be shut down.
According to the new rules of the corporate culture, we are stealing every time we expect some product or services for our money. We're stealing when we expect to use an iPhone the way we want to use it. We're stealing when we assume "unlimited" bandwidth means "unlimited" bandwidth. We're stealing when we borrow a book from the library or from friend. We're stealing when we pay for health insurance and then actually use it. We're stealing when we expect the government to do something useful with our tax money like provide health care to children instead of providing security services to oil companies in Iraq.
We're supposed to shut up and pay.
And the surprise is?
This is what happens when companies are allowed to make the laws. Most corporations have one goal: Make more money. The higher price and more times you pay for the same product, the better. Capitalism can be good, competition is the best, but it needs to be regulated, as has been proven time and time again.
When all the major record companies "agreed" on using lots of cash on DRM and MAFIAA, they knew that they were going to screw their customers. But they also knew that people wouldn't stop buying music. But this is where they stepped wrong. RIAA can't stop piracy, and DRM can't either.
Now they are making more and more desperate statements (like the example in this article), to try to compensate. Fortunately it won't help, and they will at last be forced to listen to their customers. DRM-free music is getting more popular every day, and the music industry will soon realize that they have to follow that example.
Let this be a warning for all corporations, that eventually they will get burned if they screw with their customers.
Honestly, DRM sucks. The technology is designed to stop certain people from using the software (or everyone from using it in a certain way), and it will always cause problems.
too little too late some people i know have switched to alternatives like Opera or back to IE7 (both use substantially less resources on windows) due to all that ram hogging
Firefox is still growing. Therefore it is not too little to late, but exactly what it needs, just on time.
Look at the order... I suggested Opera, Konqueror and even links over IE. But I use Firefox myself, and I think it is the best browser despite of it's memory leaks. I just wanted to point out that Firefox is not alone. If you don't like it, find something else, or stop complaining.
Windows contains BSD-licenced software. It has been in there for more than 10 years now. Mac OS X has a BSD based kernel. The rest of today's OS is mostly open source or at least uses some BSD or GNU software.

You should reclaim money for every single licence you don't use.
1. To save money
2. Not to fund MS.
After 10 years of research, investigators have discovered that governments are, in fact, manipulative.
On the 4GB version the OS itself uses 33% of the storage space, so fitting eclipse wouldn't be to hard.

Nobody forces you to use Firefox. You can use Opera, Konqueror, links or IE, or any other browser out there...
