At least a Tulip has intrinsic value as a pretty flower. Cryptocurrency just takes up space on a disk if there is no network left to exchange them with.
Amazon has been sending their customers warnings about misconfigured S3 buckets for awhile now. In order for something like this to happen, a customer would have ignored these warnings for the past 9 months.
So, yeah, someone probably deserves to be fired over this.
What's odd is that my iPhone 6 never seemed to slow down when the battery started failing. It started showing "degraded battery performance" warnings in the settings page a few months ago, and it started randomly powering itself off when it got below 40% battery life. No slowdowns, though.
Replacing the battery fixed my power problems, and I went from having about 2 hours of runtime on a fully charged battery to about 2 days. Big difference.
The.com stocks of 1998-1999 were a total scam, but it didn't stop Wall Street from profiting from them. I think that they're just pissed because they haven't figured out how to charge large commissions and underwriting fees for trading it, yet.
It gets better than that... Walmart is offering a $25 gift card if you buy it from them and hook it up their purchasing service. So, basically it's $5 plus tax and shipping.
I think that they REALLY want to get everyone using their ecosystem this Christmas, just to make it more difficult for Samsung and Apple to get in later.
I think that the opposite will happen. I think that network providers might throttle video services like Netflix or YouTube to 720p resolution unless you sign up for the "Ultra High Definition" package.
Meanwhile, they'll start offering cheaper 1080p and 4K on-demand streaming of their own video services, and people will start migrating back to the cable companies and telcos for video content.
Yeah, Netflix is big enough to afford the necessary bribes... er... "negotiations" with the cable and telco providers to prevent their traffic from being throttled. It's the little guys trying to compete in niche areas that are going to run into network prioritization problems.
I'm sure that this will eventually go to the courts as an anti-trust issue at some point. It's just sad that we're going to have to put up with a bunch of shit until then.
Am I the only one who heard Comic Book Guy's voice in their head when they read parts of this? All they forgot to add was Worst. Episode. Ever! at the end of it.
If you think of all of the waste that hundreds of millions of children produce, it kind of evens out. Before guys had porn to watch, they usually screwed their wives and had 5 or 6 kids during their lifetimes. If we still did that today, North America would probably have a billion people living in it now, with all of the problems that come with that population.
Well, that and people trying to convince you that "This time is different, $FINANCIALPRODUCTX is a new paradigm! The old rules do not apply!", where $FINANCIALPRODUCTX was.com stocks in 1999 and spec home investing in 2006.
Not that I think what I say here will sway anybody. Don't say that you haven't been warned, though.
The thing is that Apple DOES give the user some visibility to this issue. When iOS senses that the battery is failing, it puts up a "Battery Performance Degraded" warning in the Battery section of the Settings screen. I saw it on my iPhone 6, but not until it got to the point where the phone would only last 3 hours on a charge and the phone would just randomly power itself off when the battery got below 40% charge. I got the battery replaced, and now it goes 2 days on a single charge again.
They might want to put that battery warning in a place more prominently, but it is there.
So we have the ability to filter the category from our Slashdot news feed! Seriously, I've never seen this much focus on a single subject since Apple product release days (back when Steve Jobs was still alive), except these stories have been showing up EVERY DAMN DAY for the past two weeks.
Can you PLEASE fix this, so Slashdot stops looking like "News about Bitcoin, and stuff I don't care about"?
Back in the day, the only places that I used for exchanging Bitcoin with other cryptocurrencies were sites like Mt. Gox and BTC-E. They both got busted by the feds for various criminal activities, so there is no active account left to log into.
I believe that the mining pools got hacked as well, so there isn't much hope checking if any residual balances left in those accounts as well.
Man... the security of the various Bitcoin exchanges sites really sucked back then. I wonder if it's really better now, or the next big hack is right around the corner.
Yeah, but have you actually tried using Bitcoin recently as it's intended purpose of a currency? It sucks! It takes 15 minutes for a transaction to confirm now, during which time the actual value of the currency could have gone up or down by 2 or 3%. And, like Steam is complaining about, the Bitcoin transaction fees that made sense back when the currency was $100 are completely asinine now that it's around $11,000.
Yeah, I might be a bit bitter that this "currency" completely defied logic and got this overvalued, but that doesn't mean that I'm not right. Bitcoin (as it currently works) IS stupid.
Yeah... once upon a time, you could find a decent selection of movies to stream from Netflix. Not great, but decent. Now, it seems like all of the big movie houses are developing their own streaming services and most of Netflix's new content is generated by Netflix itself.
He's right, you know... Verizon's 4G LTE network was pretty awesome early on, until Apple released an iPhone with an LTE radio and the network slowed down for awhile due to all of the extra traffic. I think that was around the same time they started killing off the grandfathered $30 a month unlimited data plans as well.
I'd imagine that the first handful of 5G home subscribers will have a similar experience until 5G smartphones become popular. Then they will probably start cutting data plans for people "abusing" the system by downloading 300+ GB of a data a month from 4K Netflix streaming and a few game downloads.
It kinda makes sense when you think about it, though... tech news is filled with Bitcoin hype articles and Elon Hype articles right now, so it only makes sense to combine them.
Now, if they find a way to include Apple or Net Neutrality in that story, they will have hit the tech news trifecta! Bonus points all around!
It sounded like Munich was having driver problems with new hardware, which has always been a huge thorn in the side of Desktop Linux users.
Hell, I still frequently run into issues getting XOrg to determine the correct native resolution of several monitors that I've recently used, an issue that I almost never see on Windows anymore.
Who would you like to see become the new head of HP, if you got to choose from any acting corporate executive? Elon Musk? Jeff Bezos? Sergey Brin? Someone else?
Come on, guys, considering how bad HP's picks have been for the past few decades, I think that we can do better!
At least a Tulip has intrinsic value as a pretty flower. Cryptocurrency just takes up space on a disk if there is no network left to exchange them with.
Seriously, the answer really is no. BlackBerry OS, Windows Phone, and Palm OS all died a long time ago.

Yeah, it's also the current currency of choice for foreign money laundering and ransomware payments. What's your point?

I'm convinced that the new owners of Slashdot have a big stake in Bitcoin, and this is how they make their money.
Hey... it beats interstitial advertising, anyway.
Yeah... if someone got word that they were selling their stash, the value would probably get cut in half within 6 hours.
Just the kind of thing you want from something that's supposed to be a currency... wild price swings :)

Wow, that's the first time I've seen an Orville analogy on Slashdot. Cool.
