  3. Dark/depressing books by Greg Bear on Ask Slashdot: What's the Most Depressing Sci-fi You've Ever Read? · · Score: 3, Informative
Forge of God by Greg Bear could be considered depressing as it involves the destruction of Earth by inscrutable aliens. Its sequel Anvil of Stars is also rather dark in mood, involving an army of children on a long-term mission to find and take revenge on the Earth's unknown destructors.

Also very dark in tone is the thought-provoking short story Hardfought, also by Greg Bear, well worth a read.

With no foreign ideas for competition, each country would intensify its efforts to brainwash its own citizens in whatever way it sees fit. (see: 1984)

  11. Hameroff/Penrose model of quantum consciousness on Quantum Entanglement and Photosynthesis · · Score: 3, Interesting

This finding seems to give support to the Orch-OR (orchestrated objective reduction) theory of quantum consciousness proposed by Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose. One of the main objections to the theory is that quantum coherence could not be sustained in the warm biological environment for sufficient duration. If quantum entaglement is a normal feature of photosynthesis, it's less of a stretch to believe that quantum coherence could be one of the mechanisms to give rise to consciousness in higher lifeforms.

  21. Free brain training game - Brain Workshop on Treating ADHD With Games · · Score: 1

Brain Workshop is a free open-source version of the Dual N-Back mental exercise.

What if a simple mental exercise could improve your memory and intelligence?

A recent study published in PNAS, an important scientific journal, shows that a particular memory task called Dual N-Back actually improves working memory (short term memory) and fluid intelligence. This finding is important because fluid intelligence was previously thought to be unchangeable. The game involves remembering a sequence of spoken letters and a sequence of positions of a square at the same time.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the dual n-back task also enhances focus and attention and may help improve the symptoms of ADHD/ADD.

  25. There's a reason some cars cost more than others.. on Study Confirms That Cars Have Personalities · · Score: 5, Interesting

The easiest way to change the PERCEPTION of value is to alter the "Face" on the front of the car. Expensive cars have a face that is smarter, sleeker, sexier, more masculine, etc. Take a look at a BMW, how the shape of the headlights and the grille combine to make the characteristic BMW face. Cheap cars have weak, stupid, submissive faces. Why don't they take a cheap car and put a sexy face on it? Because then nobody would buy the expensive cars.
