  7. Lost profits???? on MPAA Botched Study On College Downloading · · Score: 4, Interesting
With the motion picture industry's creative accounting, it's a wonder there's any "profit" to be lost. The following is taken from the Hollywood Law Cybercenter website. http://www.hollywoodnetwork.com/Law/Hart/columns/

A substantial portion of the direct cost of a film produced on a studio lot is charges for the use of the studio's facilities, including the sound stages, vehicles, equipment, etc. Although the studio incurs no out-of-pocket expense for providing these facilities, it insists that the charges are proper because they comply with the SPD language defining production cost. The charges made for using these facilities are substantially in excess of the actual costs... For example, a studio will charge a motion picture for the use of a vehicle at a rental rate based upon the rental rate being charged by the leading rental-car companies, typically $45 per day or more. This charge, which includes a profit rate equivalent to the rental companies' profit rate, will be made even if the vehicle has long ago been purchased by the studio, and even if the cost of the vehicle has been charged against other films...

I would think this would keep them rolling in money without having to deal with inconveniences like paying taxes or profit percentages.

I think what must irritate them the most is that gaming industry has decided to fight them on their own turf. But at what point did supporting video games mean harming families? It's not as if the two are mutually exclusive. Pro-divorce, anti-family. Pro-kidnapping, anti-family. Pro-child abuse, anti-family. Those correlations make sense.

I'm a married man with a family and videogames. Call Social Services. I'm obviously going to have to choose one or the other and god knows, as a gamer, I'll never make the right decision.

Apparently the CD laser, but not the DVD one, had a tendency to warp out of alignment after repeated use...

I wonder if this has just been a Sony problem in general. I went through multiple PS1's and PS2's and the issue was always with the lens/mechanism. I have also had CD laser/lens/mechanism problems with a Sony Discman and a couple of Sony boomboxes in the past.

Despite this, I'm still a Playstation fan. They've always had the software advantage... until now. Hopefully, things will turn around in the near future but if the new Katamari games stays XBox exclusive, I may be purchasing a 360 first.

As a 33-year old gamer and father of two and 1/2 children (I have a step-daughter), I'm sick of politicians and other professional hand-wringers telling me how to raise my children.

I have two young boys (age 1 and age 3) who like to watch me play nearly any videogame I throw in (they're big fans of the Katamari series). Frankly, their perception of any violence or other supposed influences at this point is moot, considering their attention span is near zero at this age.

My 10-year old stepdaughter I tend to look out for more carefully. She watched a few hours of Bloodrayne and had nightmares so the horror games get played while she's at school. She likes to kill time playing any of the GTA series which I have no problem with. In fact, I usually have to kick her off the system because she's boring the shit out of me. She won't steal cars, hurt people, or open fire on unarmed civilians. She doesn't want the police to come after her and tends to wander the streets aimlessly on foot or joyride on top (yes, on the ROOF) of CPU vehicles.

I can take care of my children and control what I think they should view and participate in. I would rather keep it this way and somehow I think that a PAC, while helping get some pols on our side, will ultimately be a net loss for gamers. You cannot legislate personal responsibility.
