Very valid point on pw length as it's what I tend to follow. For those sites with a "critical" pw, I tend to use as high an entropy and length as possible. For places like/. and other forums that are not important, I use a lower quality pw as I can and will replace the account if the forum is important enough to me. Otherwise, I post AC if I'm just stiking my nose in the tent to see if there's anything interesting.
Yea! I'm one of those that tend to use anonymous ftp access and give my email, which is "Test@example.com". Seems to work quite well for most anonymous access. Of course, the few servers I use no loger require an email address for anon ftp access.
that's right, College isn't geared for people trying to learn something useful. Instead it's become the place where people go to learn what they should have in High School instead of screwing around with drugs or playing WoW. My College has a required test that if you pass, you don't need to take the Intro to Computers class as it's geared for those that have limited/no access to a computer. Another issue is that college is where folks go to learn job skills instead of the critical thinking skills you need for a PHD/Masters program. The BS/BA has become a joke in this country as it now takes 6 years to complete due to how poor our schools are preparing folks for University and Critical Thinking. Thank you PC folks. Everyone is no longer responsible for their own fate and should look to the "Fatherland" to support and correct them.
Something that we've been considering is either the Volt or more likely the Prius as our main vehicle. What we're looking at is the 40-50 mile range on battery that's long enough for our normal driving needs in our rural area. Simply fill the tank, add a bottle of fuel stablizer and basically forget about the gas unless we need to drive a long distance. That's where the hybrid really pays off and in our case based on our fuel log, we'd probably buy a tank of gas every three months.
For others that's probably not a very practical scenario but with our driving being 28-35 miles round trip each day, this would be a god send to us. Hell I can easily charge the car at home while still having the ICE for low battery situations or long trips.
B) Don't I know it. If there weren't 4 computers on the home network I'd be able to get by with a meager 512k u/d speed. What I want is lower ping times insted of the ever growing crap I've been seeing to various servers. Hell this would even improve the VOIP experience (triple play package) if they'd fix the damn Lag. Proper QoS might be of help there.
And the first thing that the Mozilla Devs need to do is delete the Unique ID for Safe Browsing from the firefox code base as it's a cookie that can't be deleted. For those using Firefox and it's derivitives, change the Safe Browsing ID to "0" and help Poisson Googles Data. What really bothers me about this issue is that even when "In Private" browsing is enabled, this unique ID is being passed to Google, in direct violation of my intentions when entering "In Private" mode. This is just one more reason I rarely use Firefox. Opera has a similar feature and I suspect it does the same. Sorry but Safe Browsing needs to be completely anonymous instead of tracking us like it does now.
As a soho business that deals with PII (personally identifiable information) I'm unable to advantage of any kind of cloud based office suite. The risk should any of that information be released accidently by Cloud Office is financial ruin due to fines, possible prison and being made an example by the Feds for violating while MS gets off with no risk. Sorry Charlie but it aint going to happen.
If the price of Windows and Office climbs to high, I'll have no choice but to move the entire business over to Open Source solutions just to stay in business. As far as document exchange go, I'm already using PDF as my base format. If the customer can't read it, then I wont do anymore business with them as everyone has a PDF reader available (Adobe Reader on Windows and native support on Apple). Solves the problem and I don't have to worry about them being able to edit/change anything w/o my being able to prove it. CYA man, CYA.
except the locales issue applies in the United States due to the national ISP's. Simply put, some products are regional and can't be bought by me, yet I see ads for them all the time
One thing to keep in mind is that it takes a Unanimous Verdict from a jury to apply the death penalty. Because of this, I feel that we really do need to streamline the process a bit by cutting out 2/3 of the appeals. In fact, I don't see why there's even an automatic appeal of the penalty because getting 12 people to agree that someone is that much of a threat to society is like herding cats. Let the jury decision stand.
I do agree that the penalty shouldn't be carried out immediately but no more then 10 years should be wasted before executing them. In the case of these god awfully long sentences, replace the damn things with proper punishment such as Public Flogging in the middle of the Town Square. That might get the message through the the crooks that "You're Behaviour is Unacceptable" enough to remember the old saying "If You can't do the Time then Don't do the Crime". It will also serve the purpose of informing other potential crooks that they'll get their asses beat should they step too far out of line and bring back some responsibility to our society. Hell the first people I'd apply the new rule to would be those Goldman-Sachs execs who simply walked away with billions of dollars after screwing the entire country. Do the same to many of these "So Called CEO's" that run a company into the ground and walk away with Golden Parachutes and maybe we'd finally get this country back to being successful and out of everyone elses hair. Guess I can dream.
Then you've never tried the various Linux usenet groups. Be careful as "Dragons and Wizzards be there that are quick to Temper". Seriously though, after reading what Intel's chosen in regards to the PowerVR for their new GPU's, I'm having to look very hard at the lack of future support from them in regards to graphics capabilities.
and this is just one more reason I'm quite happy with my dumb phone and no, it's not even a feature phone. It is simply a phone and that's exactly the way I like it.
In windows, accidental deletion is the fucking norm. That's why they created the recycle bin, because people would hit the damn delete key by mistake and "Poof" File Gone completely. Keep in mind this goes back to WFW 3.11 as it was in Win4.0a (95) that MS introduced the recycle bin.
When Using linux, I don't use a recycle bin unless the WM offers it because file deletion is a two key requirement or as stated filename -rm to do so (still a two key combo). I think it's a failure of the UI that requires any kind of recycle bin as it indicates the designers didn't think it through and follow the "KISS" principle.
You're absolutely right about familarity with the OS being the most significant factor. I support a number of local folks that are basically computer illerterate and the change from XP to Win7 threw many of them for a loop. Thankfully, I was aware of the differences having run the Beta/Preview for 18 months before pushing the actual upgrade to the rest of the home network.
What I had to do was place the icons they were used to on the desktop, in the place they were used to them being for them to be able to use Win7. The biggest advantage for me though, was the ability to configure them as standard user, thus they have to call me when UAC pops up asking for permission to install/change settings. It's saved me lots of agravation since they no longer pickup every damn toolbar or other from FB/Yahoo or those damn card sites.
Interesting point that the IPv6 standard isn't even finalized and it explains why my ISP (TW) has stated they're not going to upgrade as yet, it's half baked.
It is sort of like 802.11n. There are no less than 8 flavors of it floating around out there at different data rates and ranges. Most of the endpoint stuff you get out there is 1 antenna and 150 data rate in the crowded 2.4 range. My point not only do you have to switch out there is a huge gulf between 'crap' and 'awesome'. This is going to suck. Do not be in such a hurry to switch out..
This is exactly why I don't even bother with 802.11n hardware. Most of it's using the crap 2.5GHz band instead of the 5GHz band that they simply drown each other out and actually go slower. In my location, I can see a grand total of 6 of those stinking 802.11n AP's and everyone of them is competing for the same bandwidth. It's why mine is set to the 802.11b speeds and you know what, I actually get close to the rated speed on the home network, even with the congestion we're seeing from the cheap "N" routers.
and the damn burecrats are falling down on the job. Instead of fighting against being the testbed, they should be fighting to see who gets to sign off on each/every phase. It's turf wars with Tom, Dick and Harry stabby Moe and Joe in the back while Robert and Michael get the credit for the success.
Don't those U.K. Burecrats know anything at all about turf power? Read the damn Retief Books idiots and maybe they'll finally get a clue
Yes I RTFA and didn't see any information on whether IE9-64 is affected. Pretty lousy of the tester to not bother indicating if the problem is only with the 32bit version as the 64bit has a better baseline security configuration. Due to these issues, it's just one of the reasons I also use Palemoon64. Improved security such as full ASLR along with DEP support so I'm hopefull this does not affect IE9-64 due to the limited number of folks actually using it.
under bed cleaning? Hell if the damn thing managed to make it under my bed, it'd be lost forever - that's a blackhole down there or there's a monster that does a good job of keeping things clean. Even my cat refuses to chase anything under the bed
So you'd think. In the case of AMD though, the APU is the replacement for their lowsy FPU implementation and the entire reason they bought ATI. Based on the Roadmap AMD provided on Fusion a few years ago, I'm not suprised about the improvements in their math performance as once Intel released the Core design (based on the Pentium-M) they started leaving AMD behind in the math capabilities and all software is math related. Performance rules here and Intel was and still does beat AMD at this.
In order to stay relevant in the market, AMD bought ATI to gain the math performance of their Stream Processors. Think about it. When a Radeon x1600 can beat (even today) a Top Line Xeon for AES/TwoFish and most other crypto needs by a large margin, isn't that exactly what's needed to boost the Floating point capabilities of your CPU?
Half Right. AMD bought ATI as they couldn't match Intel's FPU performance yet the ATI x1900 was able to blow Intel's advantage clean out of the water. What we're seeing at this point is the reconfiguration/design of the CPU to include the features that were developed as independent chips (GPU's) mainly. In the case of AMD, when I saw the Fusion Roadmap a few years back (Extreme Tech) I saw the writing on the wall and actually predicted much of what we're seeing now with the GPU's moving back into the CPU die.
You've already missed the damn boat as MS started it with their Live Essentials. If you install any of the Live Essentials (mail, movie maker, writer, messenger) you system will have a new service running called Live Log-In Assistant. Not only that it also installs an BHO (browser helper object/add-on) that does the same thing. Then there's the Skydrive effort. It also includes the damn Live Log-in Assistant and don't forget the Bing Desktop and Silverlight. All of which include the damn thing. I haven't checked yet but I suspect that it's included as an important update to everyone's system that allows WinUpdate to automatically download/install updates on their computer (95% of users - Corporations count as single users due to licensing).
and Newegg has the 32GB type for less then $20 on a regular basis. I'm planning on getting either them or a 64GB after the Xmas season depending on what's cheaper
