You don't get it. The point of online storage is not to be able to use it as a remote drive but as an automated backup system. If I could make a backup of all my configuration files, preferences, source code from the projects I'm working on, personal files, address book, etc. on a daily basis, I'd feel much more at ease if my hard drive dies or something orible happens to my setup.
Hum, actually, in both the cases you mentioned (DeCSS & Napster), litigation has come AFTER litigation. Not the other way around. DeCSS was created by someone who wanted to watch DVD on Linux and Napster by someone who wanted to share MP3's with his friends. There was no threats from the MPAA or RIAA before these programs came into being.
Hum dude, Ximian support Solaris with it's GNOME distro so you really don't need to compile anything. Just download the installer off their site and watch the progress bar.
Yeah but the problem is that gtk-mozembed doesn't include cookie management so if you want to have a usable browser, you have to implement it yourself. That's why Galeon still doen't support cookies.
The only way to make a MMORPG that doesn't compell people to buy accounts from other players is to make a game where there is no skill advancement. Unfortuanately (and paradixally), skill advancement is what keeps most players comming back for more.
If you compare this with a game like Tribe which the only real skill advancement there is is your ability as a player to better control your character in whatever situations you come across. I for one would be very happy to play a MMORPG that doesn't have ant skill advancement technique.
I think there would be a lot more roleplaying going on if every "naked" character would be technically equal because there would be much more incentive to cooperate with others to gain an advantage.
It's possible to edit the start menu shortcut locations just by selecting and draging them in windows. In GNOME, you have to use a menu editor utility.
Is it just me or you sound like you're clueless? "petaflops" are not something anybody designs but a mesure of the computer's speed. This has nothing to do with genetics.
Well duh! Unless Apple plans to release MacOSX for the x86 architechture, I don't see what how it's threatening Linux since Linux's growth is not on PPC.
Amen! I have alway thought that the crowd of "Slashdot sucks these days" are trolls but in recent months, things have really degraded. It almost looks like they intentionally screw up.
The company Woz worked for before he and Jobs founded Apple. the company that didn't think Woz's inventions had any future and allowed him to do whatever he wanted with the thing.
If Hewlett was responsible for the short sightedness in Hewlett-Packard, the let's hope he brought it in his grave. (that wasn't maent to sound mean).
Today, congress has passed a regulation that would severely punish web site that publish information that is not factual with fines that can go up to 10 000$ per article.
In other news, VA Linux, owner of the news for nerds site "Slashdot.org" has senn it's stock value tumble to an all-time low...
Well, you argument about "forced sharing...is the antithesis of freedom" is just bogus. If you live in the US, you already pay taxes so that roads are maintained and various other goverment responsabilities are taken care of. So in effect, what you call forced sharing is just paying taxes. Without taxes, you'd have no government to speak of and then, no democratie to speak of either.
Public health care is a democratic choice enforced by an elected government. Some people may not like it but it's the will of the majority so they learn to live with it just like any other democratic decision.
Now canadians have a vision of civil society where all of the country's cytizens are protected from illness. Public health is as important to them as road maintenance and other tax funded spendings.
Saying that forced sharing is the antithesis of freedom is like saying you want total anarchy.
Yeah well I diagnosed ADD on myself when I was 23 years old and beleive me, if I had been diagnosed with it at an early age, my entire life would have been different. Now I have to build up a new personnality at 24 years old that is not based on lack of self esteem and all the problems that stem from being different from everybody else when you're young.
You have to be carefull how you judge people who's kids are on Ritalin because even though they may not actually have ADD, the fact remains that it's very hard to diagnose so, yes, mistakes are made but the press never mentions the good new when the drug actually fixes someone's life.
I can't help but laugh at this. This is completely ridiculous. Even if Gandalf way gay, how the hell is this relevant to anything about the book he appeared in? Maybe he liked hobbit hopin' after diner on sundays but who the hell cares?
Ooo! Big deal. They're about to allow the creation of the most powerfull corporate entity in the entire world. An unprecedented concentration of media influence.
Of all the bad things that will come out of this merger, IM incompatibility would have been the most insignificant.
Well expressly doesn't mean exclusively. Ibrowse the web, and code too but I could doo all those things on my thrusty old P200. The upgrade is much more significant for gaming.
The point is that since the US has a track record in using industrial spying, it makes the M$ backdoor much more likely.

How about E != Linux or E != Most used WM

Actually, Sawmill has changed it's name to Sawfish because some company had a copyright on the word Sawmill.

The X-Box won't even have 1/10 the demand the PS2 got at it's launch no matter what amout of hype the X-Box gets.

Maybe we need to make an alliance with them on this? Who exactly are these "we" you're talking about?
