I agree with 2, 4 and 5 in particular. The best part about the old design was that it was easy to distinguish between programs. Now the distinction isn't so obvious. Also, without the boxes I have to work harder to find the info I want. Sorry, I prefer the old design. The blue bar down the left wastes too much space and doesn't really have a purpose beyond entering login info, which shouldn't oocupy 15-20% (whatever) of the width.

If it's morals you're after then everyone had better stop using Netscape, as they're obviously only in this game to generate revenue from ads and bookmarks. Morals are good to stick with, but if it means there is no browser on the market that I can use apart from Lynx, then screw em! Let's face it, IE5.5 blows Netscape out of the water. Therefore I use it. Simple.

  17. That reminds me of ADSL on @Home Critic Silenced By @Home · · Score: 1

Actually this just triggered something in my memory about my ADSL connection.

One night I suddenly lost access to my ADSL connection. Everything was silent; nothing worked. So I went to bed, expecting it to work the next day. I use a Linux system as a firewall between my home PC and the ADSL connection. When the ADSL service dies, I have to reboot this firewall, my home PC and my ADSL modem before I can reconnect. I couldn't do this until the following night until I got home, so my service was down for about 16 hours (say).

When I complained to Bell Sympatico, their response was:

Thank you for informing us of your current difficulties.

We really would like to help you resolving the situation, however your message did not contain all the information we need to understand your difficulties.

In order for us to help you we need the following information:

    - What is the exact error message you are getting ?
    - At what point do you get this message ?
    - Are you using Windows 95, Windows 98 or Mac ?

With this information, we will be able to provide you with the solution related to your problem.

Thank you for writing to us. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

My point is that I didn't say I was getting an error message. I simply said I couldn't access any internet protocol; http, ftp, smtp or pop3. Their immediate response was to presume that I was at fault, or that my PC was not configured properly.

In the end I gave up - my service was back when I got home and rebooted, and its been there ever since. Also note the inept English in their response.

  20. Re:You can't assume privacy in a corporate env. on UK Employers May Read Employees' Mail · · Score: 1

No no no no. You're not behind enemy lines. That is typical Slashdot "we hate everything that isn't open source, free, Linux or free speech".

You work for a company, you're working on their time. You're using their resources; you're using their servers. They pay your salary. You have a commitment to that company to be responsible with their time and resources.

The company you work for is not your enemy. If that's how you feel then either you should work elsewhere, or you need your head seeing to.

If I ran my own business, and I found out that someone was posting inflammatory (is that a word?) postings on a newsgroup or browsing porn sites or sites that showed you how to make bombs (for example), I'd be pretty pissed off. I'd give them a warning, and then fire them they didn't stop. It would be my company, my rules, my machines, my money and my time. If they then say "but you can't tell me what NOT to browse", I'd say "oh yes I can".

Note that this is my moral position and not my legal position.
