I already work as a s/w developer in a Union position. I vote absolutely against unionising s/w development. Three reasons come to mind:
1) You can't fire a crap employee, you can only move them between projects 2) Employee quality and productivity has minimal bearing on earnings 3) Moving projects in-house involves formally applying for a position as though it were with an external company. Waste of time and money IMO
Also, our contract has some wishy washy wording that still gives management the right to force us to work 60+ hour weeks, weekends. They can also force us to be on call 24/7 and they can make us travel with zero notice.
What about http://www.gforge.org? They have an open source product (based on Sourceforge branch?). They also have an Express Edition (free) and Advanced Server edition (commercial) available through http://www.gforgegroup.com./ I just started looking into their products and I've installed GForge EE, though we haven't really used it in anger yet.
Never used ebay myself so I don't care what happens to it. I can't be bothered to face the hassle and worry of using it.
A relative bought my daughter a present through ebay. No problems with the seller, but it was weird how the item's price was low (and minimal activity) until she placed a bid. It was almost as though someone noticed her bid then placed their own bids to artificially inflate the price. She "won" the auction but who was she really bidding against?
It's funny, I didn't see any movies in the theatre this last year, nor did I rent or download any. So no profit from me, which is fine with me as Hollywood keeps putting out a bunch of crap anyway.
If he did something illegal, isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black? Unless he did something illegal that they couldn't hide/defend. Cynical!
Very insightful and exactly my thoughts. Large corporations need to control what patches are installed on their machines and won't perform any upgrades until they've fully tested update. Microsoft can destroy that controlled environment by upgrading a computer without anyone's knowledge.
Well said. I maintain a system running OpenVMS Pascal, with code that is 20+ years old. Some people aren't aware that older, legacy languages are still being used for various reasons.
It's a result of people not buying CDs because albums suck as a whole, they're overpriced, they can legally download through online shops for less and because CDs (especially older ones) are overpriced.... Yes the duplication was intended.
They've been dumbing down exams in England for years. I was at school when they switched from O levels to GCSEs, so I did both. I saw one of the lower level GCSE maths exams and it was a joke; given an advert for a cooker with a numerical cost, the student was asked to write the price in words. Huh??
I took O, AO and A level maths and they were hard. But by god I worked for them thanks (in College anyway) to an amazing maths teacher. I didn't get great grade but I earned them.
Since then the emphasis has been on getting as many students to pass with high grades as possible, education be damned. They don't care about making students think; maybe that explains the state of British society.

We've really hit the bottom of the Slashpot story barrel here. Was this even worth the effort of writing?

We'll probably need 50 cores just to run the next version of Windows!
Maybe Microsoft should buy QNX and use that as a starting point?
EXTRA! EXTRA! DNA test confirms Derek Smart and Peter Molyneux are related! EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about it!
It's not so much "roll over" as "bend over".

Remember to check the licensing.
I thought there was an agreement that if Trolltech were bought out, Qt would be released under a BSD license?
They might have lots of patents, but their products suck. They can't create decent products for toffee.
I thought Rogers didn't have a limit? Maybe they could just send you an email rather than hijacking your data.

Didn't realise bears were into astronomy!
Was the virus technically fantastic, or did he download a virus kit from the web and just modify it's name before releasing it?
He did this because he couldn't get a job? Maybe he should get a life instead.
I'm still trying to like Web 1.0, never mind the over-hyped user experience that is 2.0. I'm probably a dinosaur, but I just don't get it.
I'd love to know how Django compares to RoR. I like Django, though I've not written anything meaningful with it.
Seriously, what did she expect? That's perhaps almost the dumbest thing one could wear to an airport these days. No sympathy from me!
+1

Microsoft buys countries to get their votes. Apple buys... parking meters?????

Exactly. Now all they care about is making sure you can read product prices in newspapers.

Thank god I emigrated years ago.
