  9. Been there on Technology In Primary Education, Boon Or Bane? · · Score: 1
I have worked for two school districts and consulted in at least ten more. Here are my comments:
    • There are special grants available which allow schools to purchase "technology" items for ten cents on the dollar. With a deal like this it should be appearant why schools are buying so much technology; because they are being pushed to do so by our state and federal governmnets.
    • My hardest task as a network admin: making the computer/network as reliable as a textbook. This is not easy and for every lesson plan that requires technology another non-tech plan has to be available in case of computer problems. This doubles the work for the teachers and only makes they feel even less well paid (which they are!). This also requires networks to be treated as 24/7 mission-critical networks. Way to much to ask of over-worked/under-paid support staff.
    • Too many students will do whatever they can to get out of work. By giving the students a work-at-your-own-pace cirriculum most teachers are asking for problems.
    • Once a student has good penmanship, introduce a keyboard. Once their spelling is tested, allow use of spell checkers. Once they demonstrate a math skill show them how to do real world problems using a calculator or computer. By jumping straight to technology we are cheating the students because they will take the path of least resistance.

The Navy is like any other governmnet agency; procurement through contracts. Dell and EDS won the contract. Dell provides great pricing to EDS and they lease managed "seats" to the Navy releaving the need for high level IT personnel at every command. More about this can be learned from the NMCI website.

Join the Navy Reserves. Being in the Navy Reserves I can tell you that there are lots of training opportunities available; even more for active duty. The Navy has a rate (their word for primary job) called the Information Technology Specialist (those familar with Navy jobs: this rate is the afterproduct of joining the Radioman and Data Processesing rates). Training for this job includes all the coursework required for an A+, Windows 2000 Pro MCP, and a Cisco CCNA combined into a 13 week (8 hour a day) course located near Chicago, IL. It is classroom instruction and lab work. All the labs are new equipment (P4 or better computers and a new full lab of Cisco routers and switches). Best of all, after your training you are required to have a Top Secret clearance with a SSBI (special background investigation) which is good for 5 years. If you are really interested in getting a clearance and some great training, check out www.navyjobs.com or see your recruiter.

My favorite places for logic bombs are:
    • Backup program: run script after backup completes.
    • Win2k server: run a script after a service fails to restart. Trigger the service to fail on at a certain time and the system account will run your code.
    • UPS: shutdown script, reduce wait time to shutdown 0, add some deletes before the reboot, and then wait for the next power outage.
