Why the hell would you want to get in the way of that machine?
that is exactly right.
if apple wants to make a phone with one (or no) buttons, no card slots, a virtual keyboard, no MMS, no video, and a sealed case...let them. from what i hear from the iphone's detractors, there are a lot of people that like the phone, but wish that it had a few features included or done differently. you aren't competing with them if you make a n97-type phone with a good browser and well made email interface. get out of their way, let them make devices that offer the features that they decide people want. when forums fill up with tech savvy users that complain about the inclusion of this or the exclusion of that, take notice.
apple made a good phone, but it is not perfect for everyone. there is a lot of room in the market for someone to make a several hundred dollar phone that serves a different client base than the iphone.
I know what's going down with the environment. i also drive an SUV and could stand to lose some weight, but i did change my lifestyle. when i was reading about global warming i realized that most of the area i live in is going to be destroyed by flooding from the great lakes. that made me invest in some bigger tires for my truck. now i am riding high on 35" mudding wheels and a 5" lift kit. it cost a bundle and there is a pretty big hit in the gas mileage, but it is worth it to prepare for the impending ecological disaster.
kindly don't lump us all together, because some of us are trying to do our part!
well, i wouldn't care too much if they had a log of my username/pass if that wasn't the only credential needed to clean out my account. if there is a signed usb drive needed that will be pretty hard to clone with a keylogger.
i can see a system developing to compensate for people switching people on disconnect, after this happens enough they will tighten up loopholes. it is as easy of putting you on a list if you are booted from one ISP for downloading content the RIAA claims copyright to, using p2p, or even exceeding your bandwidth caps.
in the past people used to rack up lots of bounced checks, then switch to a new bank. now, the banks subscribe to chexsystems and if you fuck up once you won't be able to get an account from any member bank after that.
i am sure that the RIAA would love to maintain a list such as this. we don't need a 3 strikes law in the states, all it will take is a private system to blacklist users.
in stalker: shadow of chernobyl the guns have a condition when you look at them in the inventory menu. the lower the condition the more likely to jam. your gun jamming in battle makes you reload and can really suck if your enemy is close. it makes sense in the world of that game, as you are scrounging for weapons in a wasteland and they are not in mint condition.
generally, field stripping and cleaning are to prevent jamming. i shoot in real life, and have never had to field strip a jammed gun. most rifles just have to be cycled (slide the action, like you are reloading) to unjam them. out will pop a now-damaged live bullet. once i had a dud that fired a bullet about 4 inches down the barrel where it stopped, stuck. I just had to unload the rifle and poke it out with a cleaning rod.
i remember being told that it mimicked the movement and attack of a mounted knight with a sword. jump forward through/over a line of infantry and attack to the side.
The text...doesn't say "I believe" or I think"; it says it is the dirtiest restaurant he's ever seen.
actually, i think that if you are going to make that assertion you should look a little closer at the quote in the article and the summary:
The shop was described as one "of the most dirty and unsanitary-looking food-service places I have seen."
there is a real difference between 'the dirtiest' and 'one of the dirtiest'. the first is a concrete claim (although usually used as hyperbole). the second is a grouping, among other similarly dirty shops. even if the statement was not preceded with 'in my opinion' a reasonable reader would understand that the writer is stating his opinion. he makes no scientific or factual claims. dirty is interpretive, not quantitative. and the poster stated that it was "unsanitary-looking" which is also an interpretation. unless the poster then enumerated further, everything in the quote sounds like an opinion.
As for 1st amendment considerations, it wasn't political speech
i also think that it is important to note that the 1st amendment does not specifically protect political speech, but rather all speech.
i think that you are using "good" where i would use "great". for me, a good game is something i enjoyed playing. you know, those upper 50% where the interface and game system didn't hamper my enjoyment. a great game would be one that i couldn't wait to get back to when i was at work, was totally immersed in, and didn't answer my phone during.
recently played games that are examples:
stalker: shadow of chernobyl
great storyline, interesting world, well-done weapons and inventory system, and plenty of exploring to do. can't vouch for the ending as i am still playing. i waited a couple years and now it is $20.
GTA: san andreas
i seriously played this for well over a year. i played the shit out of that game. sometimes i would just go for a drive and listen to mp3s. still thinking about picking it back up and starting over.
jade empire (PC)
waited a long time to pick it up because i didn't know that there was a PC port of it. good game, solid story. linear but it gives the illusion of choice and i was totally immersed in the plot and world. well worth playing for the bargain bin price it is sold for now.
or how about free:
wolfenstein: enemy territory
still play this when killing AI characters gets boring and i need to shoot some real people. depending on the server the games can be really intense.
that is why they make quick-draw gun safes which can be locked with a key when you are out of the house, but opened with just a 4 digit code when you are home.
well, in a lot of cities the bars on the windows mean that you are in a good neighborhood. you have money to spend on security and you have shit worth stealing. due to a combination of population density and geographic layout it is not always possible (or desirable) to live in a neighborhood that is not within walking distance of people with nothing to lose.
as well, i have seen a lot of commercial buildings that armor air conditioning units to deter theft, maybe you can look into that. unless you live in texas it might not be advisable to execute someone stealing copper on your property and even there they don't let you hang the body on your lot line as a warning to others. maybe homeowner's insurance is the answer?
actually that might be the kind of obstacle that would force an evolution of our networks and communications. i think that people usually respond well to adversity; in this case there are a lot of very intelligent and skilled people that want information that other people have. if barriers are thrown up in the way of the transfer of data they will find ways to use technology to overcome them or create new technology to do it. i kind of like the idea of "splintered cryptoed internets" because they are less easy for any one entity to control.
besides, if the entire network is illegal to be on, can you imagine how good the warez will be?
you have a good measure of units in the market that hit a group of websites that are reporting back to the market research company. there are all kinds of factors that can manipulate the stats to favor or disfavor a certain OS. the gaming rig that you don't allow on the net isn't getting counted and neither is the mac pro that is rendering video all day long. i have a pile of pcs in my basement running a combination of ubuntu and win2000 and they rarely are on the net.
i wish there was a better way to get true numbers, but i can't agree that it is most accurate to only count PCs that are actively browsing the web.
i agree with what you are saying, but i think you mean 94%. because as far as i can tell apple market share is hovering around 6%. that is based on actual units sold, not a page view metric. every % that i have seen that is higher is not based on real numbers but an extrapolation of site visits.
if anyone has firm numbers reflecting a different market share, i would be interested to see it.
sorry you got slapped with the modstick...i don't think that was really flamebait
responding to the content of your post, you picked 2 pretty spectacular examples of a math mistake causing havoc and destruction. i will rebut with this: poor grammar or inexact word usage could render a law unenforceable, a translation nonsensical, or an instruction unintelligible. clear and precise communication can be vitally important depending on the circumstance.
i think we really agree about education more than you think; i wish there was early vocational education available as a substitute for normal curriculum, and less emphasis on memorization. (i as well remember next to nothing from biology and chemistry) however there is something to be said for challenging oneself in areas that you are not strong. most classes came easy to me, and i worked harder than i ever have in school to pass the AP calculus test...that was the last math i ever took. was it beneficial to someone who didn't go on in math and hard sciences? hell yes, i can solve and construct a simple equation in my sleep and that has come in handy in the real world. and i got a fat load of college credits for free. studying different subjects makes you learn to think in different ways, and that is always a good thing...consider it another tool in your toolbox.
sorry for causing you pain. i blame microsoft office...i used to always capitalize sentences and proper nouns until i realized it did it for me. i wonder when firefox will get in on the auto-correct action?
right, and your sentence already has a verb: "taught"
you were looking for "past" to be used as a preposition. e.g. it is past midnight.
not trying to flame you or be a jerk...it is just that you are so sure that there is nothing to be gained outside of math classes. when i read an error like that it is like fingernails on a chalkboard, and it makes me think you learned to write by listening not reading. i am sure that you can find something similar that would bug you about math.
Why the hell would you want to get in the way of that machine?

i resent that!

shit, they could put the browser right on the usb drive and only allow online banking through their locked down browser on the drive.
well i don't know if you can make it smell any better, but mythbusters proved that you can polish turds to a pretty nice shine.
that there is a pretty damn good idea. i wonder if you could get VC for a startup if you had some IP holders lined up

1. announce an end to lawsuits
2. mediasentry keeps logging traffic
3. ???
4. file thousands of simultaneous lawsuits
5. bask in your crapulence
what?
when film was still in use
you take that back!!!
you can have my 35mm when you pry it from my cold dead hands

and it has all of the latest FPS PC games you hear about online!!! ...wait, what?
