  1. chrome on windows first on A Mixed Review For Google Chrome On Linux · · Score: 1

Chrome has it's share of issues on Windows too.

Using Chrome dev 4.0+, slashdot scrolls very slowly when browsing with the weird slider bar at top (as guest). No problem in FF.

I also experienced several crashes, and it sorely needs a bookmark tree or side panel.

A lot of the extensions didn't work as advertised.

It's definitely a work in progress like it warned.

Can't we just leave the extinct alone? Some mistakes can't be corrected.

    From the FAQ:

Binaries availability: Commercial Windows and Mac customers will have access to a package containing a prebuilt Qt library supporting commercial compilers such as Visual Studio .NET.

But if like you said you can just build the binary libraries yourself, why would you bother with QT commercial? For support? To save some time?

    I don't get it.

If they give discounts for people who downloaded the RC, then EVERYONE in the world would download a copy whether they install it or not just so they could qualify for the discount. Me thinks that's a bad way to go to make money.

I can't believe people would bitch about this. I mean it's May now and March is like TEN months away. Holy cow - TEN months. Like seriously Windows 7 would probably get its first service pack around that time; almost 2 new versions of Ubuntu would be out, and Snow Leopard would have been released. That is so much time for people to try out the OS and decide if they like it. Hey if you can stand it enough to keep in on your machine for TEN months, then maybe you see some real value in it and that it is worth spending some money on (you can even start budgeting now if that is a concern for you). I mean how long do people keep their "playing-around-with-Linux-distro-of-the-week" around? And I'm fairly sure there is a windows migration tool to help moving data from older windows version; it might actually work from RC->RTM. If not, Microsoft should make one and make sure people know about it.

Also think about the money custom builders could save from now till March. Instead of forking out for a windows license, put 7 on the machine and delay the cost of the operating system. That easily shaves $200 off a build and you can buy better hardware with that money. What's NOT to love?

Furthermore, the bsd ports system's search is really good, and commands like "whereis package_name", where package_name is a package, like "vi" will show you the location in the ports tree and you make just cd to that dir and do your make. It feels too me more like it's the "unix" way where everything is a file.

I doubt people would switch to an obscure os that is less known than linux that kinda looks like windows 2000 but not manufactured by microsoft, not to mention probably lots and lots of hardware and software won't work on it. At least with Linux you have broad hardware support and maybe the expectation that software isn't compatible with it. But with reactOS the expectation is to be a XP clone and it will be a disaster. When MS retires XP, people will:

    A. take the hit and upgrade to Windows 7 with new hardware.
    B. Beg, borrow, torrent XP from the web if they need to install it.
    C. Get fed up and buy a Mac.
    D. Hear about this OS called linux that people rave about so they give it a try.
    E. Keep using whatever they have.

Honestly. Has anyone even tried it? I can't imagine what it would be like to install that on real hardware and try to get real work done. This is not meant to be a troll or flame post, but I just can't logically see people moving to reactos as a first, second, or even distant third choice when XP is discontinued.

ARM faces battle on two fronts - Intel and Microsoft. The Intel/Microsoft duopoly will make sure those devices fail to penetrate a large percentage of the market. Currently there is development of putting Android on ARM powered chips and I suspect that unless it provides some killer feature that the Intel/Windows can't provide, it will fail to make significant inroad to market share. For example, if it could provide 8 hours of 1080p video playback and lots of storage and wireless connectivity then it might sell well. But as soon as any company does that, Intel or Nvidia's ION will follow with it's x86 code and Windows 7. Windows 7 should win each time if it could provide the same amount of functionality.
