  1. Re:Era of big government is waning on NASA IG Paints Bleak Picture For Agency Projects · · Score: 1

NASA never built the rockets only maintained and launched them. It was companies like Boeing (McDonnell), Lockheed, and NAA that made programs like Apollo and the Shuttle possible. The same companies still build similar launch hardware but they charge an arm and leg for private and government launches it is still access to space from private companies.

NASA (with FAA help most likely) is probably move to a regulatory role with launch providers and, sequestration is going to hinder private manned space flights by delaying the approval process. At least that is how I see it right now, since sequestration cuts funding across the board not in select areas.

The issue is developing the space technology you are describing is going to take decades, by the time something like that is established Earth's biosphere will be so messed it might not even be repairable. Humanity could even be on its last legs by then requiring us to leave our planet for good which is not ideal.

Do I believe climate change? Kinda, I wish scientists would actually be impartial to what they find so we could have the truth rather then fudge the numbers.

Many people scoff at renewables but if we actually made it cheap to fabricate, and we used the roofs of homes to host solar panels our energy needs could drop dramatically in places like the Southwest and South. Nuclear technology is also another area we need to work on. Many of the Gen IV, and heavy water reactor designs can have their fuel cycle changed so they produce little to no waste, unlike the super old reactors we use today they guzzle massive amounts of uranium and produce pretty much the same amount of waste. The issue is no one wants to invest in these to make them come to fruition faster, they would rather put it all in some fossil fuel company and make profit all year round.

Yes, but hemp and switch grass doesn't need ideal soil conditions like wheat, corn, and soy. If most farmers still practice crop rotation in their fields they can easily grow this in the field that is getting rest, and just leave whatever waste there is for the next planting.

Algae would be a great way to produce the oils needed to make bio-diesel, it does require a bunch of water and space however. The desert would be great for this since it's mild weather in the winter, constant sunlight, and low population. The only issue then would be water but if it is conserved, and the algae can handle different water conditions it would probably work out.

    This is true AC.

The most common bio-diesel blend out there is B20. Which means only 20% of the fuel is actually bio-diesel. However, slowly phasing in increases to the biodiesel content when car and truck makers can handle it would help wean us off normal diesel fuel. There are also new processes like the McGyan process which should make bio-diesel production cheaper and easier should it take off. Then all we need to do is grow a bunch of hemp or switch grass, heck even regular tallow and cooking fats can be recycled into bio-diesel.
