  1. Different types of bricking on Hacked iPhones Confirmed As Bricking With Latest Update · · Score: 2, Informative

I think the article makes a poor distinction between actually bricking as in breaking the iphone, to returning the unlocked iphone to out of the box settings.

It seems to me there are two significant end results from updating your unlocked iPhone to firmware v. 1.1.1.

    1. Your phone is dead, non function, inactive, incapacitated and irreparable damage has been done that cannot be undone.

    Or

    2. Your phone has been returned to the "requires activation screen" when synchronized with iTunes, thereby returning the phone to it's 'out of the box' settings.

From all the posts that I've read on HowardForums, Engadget, and Gizmodo, I find that #2 for the most part, has been the only outcome. Option number two then basically means, your phone is no longer unlocked, but if you follow through with the activation via iTunes and enter into a two year contract with AT&T, you have yourself a fully functional iPhone.

  2. Re:Larry's had that for a while on A Coveted Landing Strip for Google's Founders · · Score: 1

Have you ever seen the 1979 movie The Jerk staring Steve Martin?

There's a memorable quote from the film. Steve Martin's character Navin Johnson is hired by the character Harry Hartounian, played by Jackie Mason. Navin is a lowly gas station attendant working for a salty and extraordinarily cheap auto mechanic. Upon getting the job Navin asks Harry for a relatively humble job perk that Harry construes as overly extravagant. To the best of my knowledge and forgive me for any inaccuracy, but in his best delivery Jackie Mason exclaims, "Kids these days, they don't want to climb the ladder anymore to become successful. They want to start at the top, and move to the side!"

For some 1979 wasn't very long ago. But taking into consideration the brat packs of the 80's, 90's and present day, the internet bubble, and subsequent 'market adjustment,' you might find that people have maintained a sense of entitlement no matter what the era. Or you're like Jackie Mason's character, and you're too damn cheap to accept the standard of living has increased. (end sarcasm)

This is just my biased opinion as a divorcee with no children to speak of. Although I do not work in information technology I have noticed in myself and other men, that there's this strange change that happens in the relationship. Keep in mind that my analysis fails to make any attempt at acknowledging the paradigm shift associated with modern feminist ideals.

As a bread winner in the family, husbands tend to get caught up in their career; they take a great sense of pride in accomplishment with their work, time spent, and advancements in their career. This sense of pride helps in legitimizing their efforts as the bread winner. But in the process, the husband loses sight of those goals and dreams that were once shared with their spouse to raise a child. They find a new dream to be head of the IT department, to be CFO, CEO, or whatever snazzy title, becomes a very singular narrow minded path, that tends to exclude their spouse and children. In my opinion, relationships are built on shared dreams and goals, and when those dreams and aspirations diverge, two different lives are forcibly born from a once shared sense of unity. I fail at reaching any sort of viable resolve, other than there needs to a level of acceptance by both parties that, these are the dreams we aspire to raise a happy health child, but this is the path we must take to attain those dreams. Along that path is hardship; and time spent apart, but there must be constant reinforcement that the work and time spent is for the greater good of the relationship. And what is that goal or dream that you both hold in the relationship? Sometimes it is to have a happy family with 2.5 children, other times it is a lot more simple like wanting to grow old together. So it is not just about the child, but the shared hopes and dreams. Blah, I wish I had a better conclusion.

  9. Pain due to mouse usage on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Unrelated to Typing? · · Score: 1

Seems like a majority of the +4 and +5 posters have been attesting their pain to mouse usage, and I'd have to agree. Typing does not necessarily induce any pain in my forearms and wrists, but using a mouse does. I find that in order to maintain precise control over the mouse, I apply a significant amount of pressure at the base of my palm and wrist region. This way my fingers are elevated, and float so I can use my fingers to move the mouse with greater accuracy. Now after some time, I'll begin to notice pain and inflamation in my mouse hand (I'm a southpaw) while typing. So is the resolution, I need a wrist pad, or maybe a better designed mouse? One that'll allow me greater control, but a lower profile? Maybe something that tracks the motion of my finger on a pad as a pointer. But no matter the design of the mouse, either way I still apply the same ammount of downward pressure on my wrist if I were trying to move my index finger about on the table with great precision. Oh, maybe a camera mounted just above the screen, that followes where my eyes are focused on, and extra keys on the keyboard to replace the mouse buttons.

Ok that's enough rambling on for one day.

Does the T|X or the Z22 play at least two gigs of music or have instant messaging? Otherwise it is completely irrelevant to the buzz today.

But honestly, I was so jacked up a couple years ago when the Zire first came out. I had to have it. The Zire is/was affordable and met all of my needs at the time. Then I discovered I could have SMS messages sent to my cellular phone as a reminder for my appointments (free incoming messages on my plan). Likewise I was rarely ever away from home or work and needed to know someone's work or home address; so I kept all my contacts on my phone, and kept up with my appointments via SMS messages and effectively made my Zire obsolete.

I'm certain others will find a spectacular value in the T|X with all of its functions especially being able to edit word and excel files on their handheld and transmitting those files wirelessly. But I tend to save those kinds of functions to be done at work place. My time is just that, my time.

Why are fax machines popular? Because they are secure. Sure there are more secure methods of delivering information like registered mail. But the potential for someone between company A and company B to intercept information from an E-mail is greater. Likewise the expense of qualified people to setup your secure firewalls and what have you is a greater cost than having to spend on an ISDN line and a half way decent fax machine. Is it possible when sending a fax someone at the other end of the line could swipe the documents from the machine and take all the secrets that might be sent? Sure it is possible, but the chances of that are the same as the chances of someone finding an unlocked terminal. For that reason fax machines are much more secure because the average person can trust that there is a direct connection, and that no one at any point during transmittal is going to intercept any information. This also involves a level of trust with your telco, and that someone hasn't tapped your lines. This leads us to question whether the current standards for E-mail are suitable to replace the good old standby fax machine.
