It's not that they made the jump into 3D, it's that they did it well. Super Mario 64, Zelda OoT, and Grand Theft Auto 3 are examples of this and deserve praise. For counter examples, look at Megaman, PacMan, and countless others that failed miserably. It's not fair to dismiss it as first-3d-game-in-a-series worship when F-3-G-I-A-S apparently isn't so easy to do.

So art is only art if it celebrates the beautiful aspects of human emotion? I wouldn't say so. If that was the case, Schindler's List never should have won that oscar. In my opinion, it's important for art to capture a full picture of human potential, be that good or evil. In some sense, art is meant to help us understand our emotions and actions. It may be even more important for us to understand our shame than to glorify our pride. Note: This is not an argument for GTA IV as art, I'm simply arguing against your point that art shouldn't portray pathetic human behavior.

People love to call out the sniper in this argument. They say "sniping is harder with a controller" as though it was a bad thing. You know what? I say great! Sniping is such crap when it becomes too rampant. There's no easier way to take an action packed, intense game and turn it into a slow paced campfest then to throw in a point-and-click sniper. The other day, a friend of mine went on a 42 kill streak with the sniper in Team Fortress 2 for the PC. I think he moved twice the entire time. At least with the controller, the sniping doesn't ever seem too dominant.

The PSP is a more powerful system, so it seems like it would be a better choice to handle a game of this scope. However, I think the popularity of the DS and the additional control options of the DS are what won out in the end. Besides, the DS might not be as powerful as the PSP, but it's still a very capable system.

Truthfully, though, I've grown accustom to the ignorant, contemptuous perspectives of the nongaming community towards my preferential hobby. For some reason, it's impossible for most non-gamers to accept the possibility that a mature, responsible individual could get as much enjoyment out of a well-made videogame as others do from books, movies or television.

I don't really understand where this stereotype comes from, since most of the gamers I know are neither children nor immature twenty-somethings smoking pot in their parent's basements at 2 in the afternoon. I, myself, am 26, have a B.S. in computer science and make a pretty good living as a web programmer for a reputable engineering company. As for your remarks about a gamer's probable love-life... GOD you're ignorant. I don't know what else to say about that. I'm sure an AC forum troll like you gets all kinds of pussy. Chicks dig flamebait, so how could anyone else compete? I'm routinely satisfied, though, if you know what I mean.

I guess what it comes down to is your preference. Some people prefer an interactive form of entertainment. Other people prefer to post retarded comments as anonymous cowards for the sad little thrill of drawing attention to themselves. Everyone has their hobbies. If you're lucky, you'll enjoy yours half as much as I enjoy mine.

Holy crap! How is this not flamebait? And how did it get modded +4 interesting? Is this site really so full of ignorance? I wouldn't name the PSX as my favorite console either, but to say that the console that single handedly knocked Nintendo out of its long held spot as the number one console company didn't have any innovation is completely outrageous. The PSX brought about the age of the third party developer. Before then, manufacturing on cartridges was too expensive and Nintendo took a big bite out of the publisher's profits. The PSX changed all that and finally allowed third party developers to invest large amounts of money into their products. This is why so many developers left the Nintendo platform to focus on the PSX. Let not forget that the size of the CD allowed for games to include things that required more memory, not just in the form of cut scenes but also voice over acting (something that really came into it's own with the PSX). What's more, the videogame community expanded greatly with the PSX as, like the Wii of today, the PSX appealed to a wider audience, namely the more mature crowd that had grown tired of more youth-oriented games like the Mario series and instead focused on more adult-oriented games like the Metal Gear Solid series. I don't understand why there is still so much polarization in the gaming community. I long ago learned that there are positive and negative things about all consoles and all games, and the "Best/Worst Episode Ever" mentality is completely moronic.

I happen to consider many other things like games, how the console compares to other consoles in it's generation and how it improved on previous generations. In fact, there's really so many factors I can't even decide on an answer for myself.

quoting sales figures proves very little. Why, I could argue that a popular system with fewer triple A titles would result in those titles having high sales. In contrary, a popular system with a lot of triple A titles would cause the demand for triple A titles to go down, thus sharing the sales across all titles and effectively ruining any individual game's chances of selling a record number of units. In other words, maybe the Super Nintendo simply had so many good games that not a single monopolized the sales.
