I for one welcome being able to browse among the TVs to find one I like and then to buy it at the biggest discount possible right there and then because the retailer plans to make up the margin by selling cables. It's not as if the cables are a mandatory part of the deal, you can always order them online or buy them at a different store.

Apparently iconodulism holds that exploitation of any kind is less shameful than being caught leering at women's bodies and rather than stop the leering, it is easier to shroud the flesh. I can't think of a better case of "blame the victim".

that it is commonly believed that specifying software is easy. It is very hard even for smart people and to my mind should be avoided if at all possible. What NYC should have done was to find a payroll system they liked, perhaps had it tweaked a little by the vendor where there were irreconcilable differences and then changed their own payroll practices to fit the capabilities of the software. As others have said, it's not as if New York is the only state with a payroll to process.
SAIC make their living out of poorly written specs, they have no interest in getting a decent spec.
Furthermore, this is an area where open source excels, one can generally quickly make a decent prototype and once you have discovered what you like through trial and error you can either use the working prototype as a specification or simply scale-up the software you have and use it for whatever period you choose, you won't be forced to upgrade on a vendor's timetable (another source of "perpetual gravy").

These are all synced to the Earth's motion and anyway...

    • Wall clocks (and by extension syslog clocks etc.) can generally stand to be gently corrected every now and again so the smooth progression of time is not as important for those purposes (ie. >99% of all purposes I would guess) as it might be to a hyper-accurate physics experiment

So go ahead, redefine UTC and we can all just go back to using GMT for our reports, syslog messages, traps etc. that all have far more to do with the time as experienced by users than the time as experienced by a cesium atom. I expect that soon after the decision is made someone will start gmt.pool.ntp.org and utc.pool.ntp.org and we'll have a choice.

I agree, there is already a law to make murder illegal as there should be, but not all gun deaths are murder. There is also a law to make robbing a 7-11 illegal, but because guns are so prevalent, practically every 7-11 robbery involves one.

Also there is not just criminal law, but I don't hear of so many people that were financially ruined permanently when they accidentally shot someone by dropping their concealed-carry gun that they just had to have to make then feel safer.
