So not spreading confidential info that could very well destroy a person's reputation, career, and marriage is not ethical ?
Keep in mind lawyers' loyalty is only to their clients, exactly like doctors and their patients. Think about it, would you go to a criminal defense lawyer if he was just going to rat you out to the fucking pigs ?
That's simply not true ! I must have made oh, about $200 in donations from my open source projects. Over the course of 2.5 years. OK so maybe the guy had a point.
More seriously, these are hobby projects... I get to do what I want, when I want, simply for the pleasure of coding. If other people actually like my software enough to throw a couple bucks my way, then all the better. If the consultant was suggesting making any money from hobbyist projects (closed source or not), he is a loon.
Similarly, your consultant is, quite frankly, an idiot if he thinks most open source software gets done by hobbyists. Case in point, not more than 35% of that flagship OSS project, the linux kernel, is done by volunteers. And on a personal note, while I have never been employed primarily as an open source developer, all my employers have encouraged, or at the very least allowed, me to contribute to OSS projects that were used in-house. Mainly in the form of patches, but hey every bit helps.
I had taken life (or so I assumed) and was none to happy about it
Do you eat meat ? If so then what's the difference between killing an animal yourself and getting it already dead at the supermarket ?
And boar tastes good...
There was a patch for XP / Vista when the law changed, although it took them longer than Mandriva & CentOS to release it. If you have win2000 and earlier, you will need to edit this registry key like so:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Time Zones\Eastern Standard Time]
"MapID"="38,39"
"Index"=dword:00000023
"TZI"=hex:2c,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,c4,ff,ff,ff,00,00,0b,00,00,00,01,00,02,00,00,\ 00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,02,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
In the spirit of fairness, I had a copy of Spore sent to Michael Behe, an intelligent design advocate based at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. After playing Spore, he concluded that it "has nothing to do with real science or real evolution--neither Darwinian nor intelligent design."
For those books which do not have to be updated, like grammar or geometry for example, I found the older books in my high school to be better. It seemed like every new edition just kept on dumbing things down, putting in more pretty pictures and needless "in summary" type things, and taking away actual content. Worst of all, the English books would use easier, more common words...
Oh because you think that 'most user friendly OS' - OSX doesn't need a recompile for iPhone vs laptop use ? And did only having one architecture hinder Windows from taking over the world (yes I know it supports 2 variants of the same now) ?
Besides 99% of linux _desktop_ users do not _need_ to compile anything. I certainly have never had to do so for regular use.
Now for an admin... well that's part of the job description.
The Linux kernel has never been and has never claimed to be binary stable. The way I see it there is absolutely nothing wrong with having to compile modules for an open source kernel... it's what makes the system so flexible. Given that, what you are looking for is modprobe.
And if you MUST have binary compability, look at Solaris.
The problem with China though is the rampant piracy.
They were selling Vista disk for a few dollars before it was even released.
Then, MS had to cut prices to $66 just to sell any copies.
Here in the west at least most of the customers actually pay.
I developed python GUI apps for windows workstations during my last job, using wxPython. While many were trivial, basically simple scripts with a GUI, some were rather complicated and took months to develop and debug.
Concerning portability, python is just as good (if not better) than java. All my python apps, save for those that did win32 specific stuff, run equally well on Linux, Mac, and BSD.
Where java is superior to python is in execution speed.

You can download a non-trivial python GUI app that I've been working on here. Version 2 (in beta) has more features.
I felt the same way about KDE, particularly with SuSE - very confusing and irritating interface. I was also used to 2000/XP.
Then I tried Ubuntu with Gnome and found it much more logical and easier to use than any other OS I have tried, seriously. Although OS X is close, it is immediately disqualified for that no right click bullshit.
BTW, the calculator is under 'applications -> accesories -> calculator', the movie player under 'applications -> sound & video -> movie player'.
You seem to be confusing two different effects of a large asteroid impact - initial and long term.
One of the initial effects will be a huge cloud of dust, blocking almost all sunlight for years at at time - this is what caused the mass extinction at the end of the cretaceous. Others include giant tsunamis (if it crashes into a liquid), 'rain' of molten rock and ash, earthquakes, ect...
However, on Earth, there are few long term effects, none of which include altering global weather patterns long term. This is due to our planet's ever-changing surface, with new land being created, land being destroyed, and of course continental drift. Mars has no active volcanism and no continental drift, therefore a surface feature which would be rapidly (in geological terms) altered on Earth would last for a very, very long time on Mars.
Another thing is that we have a much thicker atmosphere, reducing the size of the asteroid before impact, AND the probability of it hitting solid ground as opposed to water is about 30/70.
beware the fire ants !!
The full Windows kernel runs on ARM ? That's news to me. If you're thinking WinCE, it's a totally different OS.
We're talking devices here, not application compatibility. Unless you're talking about this kind of flash, there's no hard-ware involved (pun intended).
It's funny, but it's also very sad, and we must avoid this at all costs.

Not sure I understand you. Did you use OSS within closed source project, or did you make a new OSS project out of already existing code ?

Bah, they should just rebuild the windows GUI on top of *nix using Wine for compatibility and call it a day. But that's a different discussion ...

Anyway, for the record, please understand that automated testing is an integral part of any good software project.

Here's a bug report I filed a while back.
There are 3rd party services now included in FF which have additional terms not covered by copyright/trademark law.
