The US isn't the only country that's suffering a conservative revival. Even in France, the cons are making a big fuss (and taking over the gov.) It seems to be a pretty widespread phenomenon in the western world atm. At least good ol' Scandinavia is still liberal and awesome. Fuck Canada, I'm moving to Norway.

  2. In Defense of Gentoo... on Linus Torvalds Speaks Out on Future of Linux · · Score: 0, Flamebait

I'm not a ricer. I don't run the amd64 version. I like my OS to run what I want, and work well on my system. I've tried numerous distros (specially Fedora and Ubuntu, but I started with Debian), and they just didn't deliver. In my experience, the whole ubuntu and fedora style of doing things their way to make it 'less of a hassle' for the user has still not gone far enough. Linux distros are just simply not ready for full 'install-and-run-perfectly' functionality. That's why I use Gentoo. Maybe it's because I'm more comfortable using it than any other distro at this point, but I find that since I spent so much time configuring so many things by hand, I'm better able to troubleshoot the really dumb stuff when it starts happening. As opposed to ubuntu, which I'm running on my laptop. For example, one day, it suddenly decided that holding shift and pressing space bar would mean I get no space. This is a complete mystery to me, and I don't even know where to start, if it's something wrong with X11's dvorak keyboard layout, or if some app within the WM is using shift+space as a shortcut. Ubuntu isn't exactly troubleshoot-friendly... I find I get fewer mystery errors with gentoo than I do with more pre-built and packaged distros, and that's why I use it in my main box. People criticize Vista for smaller problems than Ubuntu has all over the place, but because it's linux, it's ok? And Fedora... you're telling me I should use a distro that doesn't even play mp3 files? Honestly, fuck that. When distros like Fedora and Ubuntu are actually solid, and don't take several weeks to package stuff, I'll switch to them. For the time being, since I'm a complete dork, I'll stick to my souped-up Gentoo install that gets me a whopping 1 second of accumulated extra performance per month.

Most violent video games out there that people freak out about are extremely tame compared to many horror movies out there, but the outrage seems to be much less tame... Where's your outrage over all the violence on TV and movies? What about the internet? By your same arguments, we should start doing this stuff for television... but hey, you can't. Video games are an important cultural part of our society, and reflect, just like any media or artform, the characteristics of that society. Children aren't going to be conditioned and trained as mindless killers because they played Postal2, but they ARE going to be unprepared to cope with a lot of things if they're 'shielded' from all these 'godless' 'evils'. Also, have you actually looked up the correlations between children who play violent video games and actual violence? Go do so. There's bigger factors in whether a kid will turn violent, and I assure you playing video games of a violent nature is not one of them. Then again... this is kinda like preaching to a brick wall. Enjoy your little Bush-is-the-messiah world. I'll be letting my kids play whatever games they want. They'll be better, much more intelligent people. :)

Was it Vendetta Online that had twitch-based combat?I know there's some space MMO out there that does it. Either way, I personally enjoy EVE's combat system. It's very technical, lots of micro-tweaks and spreadsheeting, which is very different from most MMOs I've played out there. I'm also under the impression that a twitch-based space sim would be very very hard to pull off with current technology (or technology from 4 years ago), while still keeping the obscenely huge size of EVE's single-'shard' cluster. Heck, the cluster barely holds up as-is. Also worth noting that there's an 'Ambulation' feature in the development process, with videos already out. They're starting with just basic station walking and access to basic station resources through that interface. Going on planets has also been explored, and I've seen concept screenies, but that's just another one of those things that just doesn't seem to be needed right now. CCP doesn't get enough credit for the stuff they do. All people cry and moan about is a couple of controversies involving a few employees, which CCP definitely went and took care of. I'm amazed how just because a bunch of butthurt SA Goons make a big fuss out of something, EVE is considered the most corrupt MMO out there. It's as if everyone suddenly forgot all the s**t other major MMO companies have pulled (discriminatory bannings from Blizzard staff, major, high-rank GM corruption in AO, EverQuest, and UO after the move to EA, the destruction of SWG, and that's just a couple of the ones I've played...). Eve is a solid game, with a very good company behind it, regardless of what the /. and Goonfleet fear-mongering likes to make it seem. No, I don't work for CCP, but I've played enough MMOs to be a bit startled that EVE takes so much flak over relatively minor offenses.

This is interesting, since CCP is actually preparing the introduction of T3 equipment. For a very long time, they've had a very particular way to work with T2 (better than T1) equipment, and that's to raffle the Original Blueprints for T2 items. This was a compromise between many different systems that didn't work very well, but gave many people unfair monopolies over much-wanted items. They've been stepping further and further away from this by introducing invention (which lets you 'invent' limited-run blueprints of T2 ships and modules). I wonder what this new economist will have to say about T3... I don't think there's been any official mention of how the T3 market is going to work.

I've played games with in-game ads, and it's really not that bad. Depending on the game, it can even make it more immersive. What comes to mind when I think in-game ads is modern-times games that have ads on in-game billboards in city environments or roads. In cases like these, ads actually make the game pretty immersive, and they don't really bother me in the least. My biggest issue is that even though they're giving us something full of ads, and making money off of THAT, they still refuse to lower the price. In that respect: fuck ads. I'll accept them as opposed to just stand them when they actually lower the price for the games I buy. (Yes, I buy games, lay off :)

I may have just been terribly lucky, but I remember that when I first started using Gentoo, I could go to its IRC channel with any stupid questions that google and forum searches didn't come up with. They were always answered. That, and the great quality of documentation are what have made me stick with gentoo for this long. Lately, though, it's become pretty hard to get any actual help. At least the documentation is really good, though. Gentoo Wiki beats down any other distro's in my experience, although the Ubuntu one is growing a lot lately.

There's plenty of amateur photographers out there that like taking nice pictures, and taking their time doing so. It also applies to pretty much any amateur filmmaker, and effectively bans anything more than small handheld camcorders from use in new york. I'm a film student, and it takes me 10-15 minutes just to set up for some quick shoots with my camera (it's pretty big). Taking into account my possibly shooting for more than 15 minutes in some place, that means I'd need to shell out ONE MILLION DOLLARS (cue Dr. Evil pinky + laughter), in order to make some dumb student film. It's not a matter of what they intended to do, it's a matter of what the actual effects are.
