Annoyingly, the dvdauthor team changed to an XML specification the week before the article was published 8-). The dvdauthor site now has some half-decent documentation to describe how the new format works, so it's not too hard to translate my article into the new version.

No. The product that CD-Wow sells is legal. It's just that they can buy it in Hong Kong, ship it across the globe, and still manage to charge a lower price than most UK retailers. The record company's Hong Kong division gets the money, rather than the UK division.

    Hey, I'm the writer :).

Yes, you're absolutely right that video producers should be thinking about the video rather than wrestling with the tools. And yes, a GUI would make things a lot easier (there is an effort, Polidori under way to provide one). But on the other hand, commercial DVD authoring applications are not cheap, especially if you want one that takes advantage of the more esoteric features. dvdauthor on the other hand, doesn't have any of these restrictions, so if you're an amateur who wants to play around with making DVDs, but don't want to fork out the $1,000 or so for Scenarist, it's a good trade-off (also, the new release of dvdauthor has created a new way of specifying the layout, so it's not quite as hideous as my article makes out anymore ;)).

But, yes, I am looking forward to the day when I can can click on GnomeDVD and drag MPEG2 across the desktop :)

Don't worry, it's just Dave Winer throwing a hissy fit. The 'funky' parts of the MovableType feeds are just a few extra tags from the Dublin Core specification, which Dave doesn't want sullying his RSS spec. He's the only one who seems to have problems with the additions (I haven't heard of an aggregator that breaks on MT feeds, for example).

Bonobo is the new GNOME component architecture, heavily influenced by Microsoft COM. The flame war seemed to start over bonobo-conf (or bonobo-config - I think these are two different programs, but people seemed to use them interchangably) versus GConf (the current GNOME configuaration system. Originally, bonobo-conf was going to be a wrapper for GConf, but apparently Miguel + Ximian thought that GConf had major design flaws, so they (well, Dietmar Maurer ) created a new system with bonobo-conf. When this became apparent, Havoc (maintainer of GConf) was upset that they had done this whilst originally telling him that it would be a wrapper, and that the new bonobo-conf had problems that GConf already addressed (like overridable default settings). Cue flamage. I think that parts of libgnomeui were changed to use bonobo-conf, which annoyed people even more.

For more accurate info, read the GConf mailing-list archives and see for yourself 8-).
  15. Quality of Service? on Napster Introduces Subscription Charge · · Score: 3

At the moment, I expect nothing from Napster; if a song cuts out in mid-download it is a pain, but as I'm going to be getting the track for free, I don't mind spending a bit more time getting the track later on. Once money gets involved (and I have no qualm about paying a monthly/yearly fee in order for access to a music catalogue), I (and I'm sure others) will expect a much better quality of servers. And I'm also feeling a bit uneasy about the fact that Napster's current line of defence (being a common carrier) doesn't quite suit once they start charging for the service. After all, it's the people who use Napster who make it valuable, not the server setup. Anyway, we shall see...
