Here in the South-East of England, we have a water shortage and the water companies have imposed a hose-pipe ban... so filling a pool is right out of the question!

Of course the real nail-in-the-coffin will be when Microsoft starts to delay the release of known threats and exploits until they have a fix, patch or update for thier product(s). It seems that if you can use the words "Mac" and "virus" ** in the same article then you're bound to get it posted on some tech news-sh^Hite. Then give it two or three days and virtually the same article will pop-up on the BBC's website with even more inflated dire warnings.

Oracle sees M$ essentially giving away M$ SQL for education, development and non-commercial users. When starting on a new project, most people will start with the "easy" and "safe" option. That option is becoming M$ SQL. Oracle knows that once people have got used to one system, they're loathed to switch.

Note, that M$'s stratagy also hits at MySQL and Postgres: WHy bother to start with MySQL when M$'s SQL is "free" too?

The problem with Unix servers is that the big Unix vendors have spent so much time hyping Linux that they've forgotten their own Unix. AIX, HP/UX, Irix, they've died a death. It's almost got to the point where there's ol' Slowaris left.... Oh, and UnixWare of course :-)

I work for a small company just like the IBM ad., I am the IT department and my name's Dave. (Actually, my name's Tim, but I _am_ the IT department.)

Because we have several systems which are partly maintained by different 3rd parties, we currently run 4 Windows servers (1xNT4 and 3xW2K).

However, we _also_ have two Linux servers. One of them, is the main mail server and the other is the cvs repository.

I should think that the number of "small" Linux boxes is now pretty close to the number of "small" Windows boxes.... but I doubt whether they come into these stats.

Similarly, what about all the routers running Linux variants. Do they count? They're "servers" of a kind.

The scary thing is that people forget about slammer and blaster and the misery that having such a high percentage of Windows boxes (which all susceptible to the same vulnerabilities), can have within large organisations and across the internet as a whole. In nature mono-cultures like that would die-out very quicky.

Apple _might_ even offer to sell you Windows pre-installed (doubt it personally), but they're not going to stop anyone buying a Mac just because they want to run Windows on it.

The question is: "Who in thier right mind would do such an insane thing?!" Well, I would. I'm a Mac fanboy and a Windows programmer. I'd lurv to make a nice shiny new Intel Mac on/under my desk rather than my stinky IBM! OK, it's not stinky, but it is noisy.... but then what do you (erm... I) expect it's a flippin' xSeries 206....
