As the second born, I'm obviously doomed. I guess I'd better hand back my PhD. Also, in the UK, a "Public School" is a very posh private school. State schools are where scum like me end up.
Your off-the-cuff remark is more true than you think. Don't forget that SCO (that is Caldera) got the unix rights from Novell. The whole SCO vs Novell issue will result in Novell getting those rights back. The result? A linux company "owning" unix. We've been here before!! Novell OpenSCO here we come....
That's funny, cos my Renault Clio has done 90000 miles (144000km) and is still going fine, despite the fact that I haven't ever changed the oil. I'm sure other owners have changed the oil, but I don't bother. My Fiat lasted 128000 miles before I gave it to my brother... who wrapped it round a tree. My Vauxhall (GM) Vectra got to 125000 miles before the diesel pump gave up.... before that I had a Toyota.... that got to almost 200000 miles before I traded it in. While I do feel that the Prius's over dependence on technology maybe counter-productive, but compared to a 6MPG Hummer, theres no contest. Compared to a moderen, clean, diesel car, I'm not sure. YMMV.
Who says that's not what they're doing? I can't imagine that Tesco have actually written any software. They've either licensed something like Ability Office or just re-branded OOo. Since OOo is by far the best MSOffice competitor, the odds are the Tesco Office suite will just be OOo.
Don't get me wrong.... If Tesco did just that, that would be great.
But, I agree with you.... the MacPro is ugly. But it's ugly in a stylish mean sort of way. I like it that way... however, there's no way I'm going to have one in my living room. Nor my Dell Dimenion. The Mac mini is, OTOH, a beautiful bit of kit. However, it's just a little bit under powered.....
The clear winner of the Intel money is the iMac. HP's and Dell attempts to do "integrated" PC's are just dogs dinners.
However, I think Apple could still release a small "desktop" computer, using the Core 2 Duo Conroe chip which would complement the iMac and the Mac mini. It would be a little more expensive than the Mini, but be more powerful. Becuase it would use less expensive components than the Mini (3.5" HDD, normal optical drive, Conroe CPU), it would benefit Apple's margins. Being somewat less powerfull than the MacPro would ensure it didn't eat into those sales. The only issue is whether it would compete unfavourably (for Apple) with the iMac.
One more thing.... Apple's iTV concept will be the nail in the coffin for the Media PC. It's a dead duck anyway, but the iTV box (and the cheap clones) will do what the Media PC has tried, and failed, to do.... PC's and TV's do different things. Apple has finally worked it out. The iTV brings the two together in a way that doesn't cripple either.
Gosh, that went a little OT. So, just toi recap... Apple's iMac gets my vote for Intels money!!:-)
It's irrelevant because no way is Dell going to have 50% of its sales, or even server sales, running on AMD. I'd be surprised if it got to 10%.... less on the Desktop.
Not true! I've been bitten several times by sharp edges inside cheap cases! Crickey! I lost
a finger installing a sound card once (OK, I didn't, but there was a lot of blood!!)
Did anyone else immediately think of this episode of
Rhino and Nutmeg??
I've been putting off moving from VC6 up to.Net/2003/2005... your post simply makes me put it off even longer. Thanks:-)
Oh.. and Excel... is it my imagination, or has "Solver" got really bad at "solving" anything in recent versions? I used to use Excel 4, Excel 95 and Excel 97 with no problems at all, but since I upgraded to Excel XP and then Excel 2003, I've found that the Solver.... deosn't. Maybe it's just my problems getting more complex....
Can I suggest FireFox and Adblock. I use it all the time, and I'm always amazed when I use other peoples browsers just how many Ads there are.... I hardly ever see an advert.... I also use Flashblock to erm... block Flash.
Which display is sharper? Which is brighter? Which is clearer? Which screen allows more versatility?
How about "Which display shows text for the longest without running out of batteries?", or "Which display wastes precious battery life by having unnecessary features?". The display is one of the biggest battery power eaters. So deciding that that big colour rich display is actually a liability is perfectly valid. And, what's the point of a lovely display if you can't see anything on because the battery has died? Try this test.... use the Q1 and the Newton continuously for 3 hours.... which one has the better display now? Newton: Greyscale:-(
Q1: All-dark:-(((
That's funny (not ha ha funny), because in the UK, the government has raised tuition fees
in order to increase the number of students going to University.
The "Hitch-Hikers' Guide to the Galaxy" explanation of the logic follows something like this:
Universities are strapped for cash and can't accept any more students. So to increase the
number of students, Universities require more funding. As the tax-payer is reluctant to
subsidise rich kids getting Media Studies degress, the burden for paying for all these
extra students must be carried by the students themselves. Hence, Universities may charge
huge fees. Ah, but you say, "What about all the poor people who want to go to University
to get degrees so that they can become teachers?". Well, the solution there is to provide
cost effective loans, which only need to be paid back, if the student starts employement
with a job which pays more £15000 p.a. Ah, but you say, "But teachers earn more than
£15000 p.a.!" Good point. We'll drop teachers' pay to less than £15000 so that they don't
have to pay thier loans back! It's a Win-win situation.
Student numbers have gone up a little, and then down a little. Oh, well.
Stangely, the National debt continues to go up. After-all what's a £4000 credit-card bill
next to a £20000 student loan? Peanuts!
I'm just glad I did my studies when there weren't any fees (or rather they were paid for me).
P.S. Please exscuse my Grammar. I did a Chemistry degree rather than media studies.
If you don't like the way the Mozilla folk manage the Firefox project then get a copy of the source code and do your own management....
Equally, If you don't like the way Microsoft manage Office releases, then use another office suite.
The thing about free (as in speech) software is that you have the choice to do what you want with the code. It doesn't say anything about how FOSS projects are managed.
However, I think that the Mozilla projects are particularly well managed, and Firefox in particular, is a very very good product.
CMOS isn't new. Digital camera's aren't new. CMOS digital camera's aren't new. So, what's new? So cameras can take 10 pictures in quick succession... Is that new? Erm.... no. My 3yrl old Minolta can store pictures in RAM before they get stored to the SD card so that you can take pictures quickly.
As the second born, I'm obviously doomed. I guess I'd better hand back my PhD.

Here's what happens:
1) Novell gets Unix back.
2) Novell does deal with Microsoft.
3) Novell changes name to SCO.
4) Novell (i.e. SCO) stops SuSE.
5) Novell (SCO) sues IBM.
6) Prifit!

I grew up in Dovercourt (Fronks Road)!! I can confirm, the Continental is rather bright!

Shit!! Better get myself a Prius then?!
I followed the link to TFA, and was expecting to see the very satalite images which have shocked the scientists... but no. WTF?
If the scientists want us to believe that the polar ice caps are melting, then we (the public) are going to want to see pictures.
Sorry, without pictures, I don't believe it. Anyway, I've got to go now, because I've got to pick up my kids from school in my SUV.
If "modern" life is too harsh for children, I sugest sending up
chimneys, down coal mines and out onto the streets to beg for
food.
Why, in my day, we lived in a cardboard box and had to eat lumps
of coal!
Yeah! Why have 1 copy of a corrupted file? Two corruted copies is much better!!
