Actually, dude, Linux was designed originally for hardware which was much LESS powerful than the current crop of handheld processors. Remember the 386?
Good. A little FUD served steaming cold back to the FUD masters of the universe will do them good. The black eye looks good on them.
I'm sorry, but even if MS pulls a complete 180 and makes only high-quality products from now on, I still hope they rot in hell. Bastards have put computing back 10 years at least, and turned a bunch of possibly inquisitive people into Visual Basic morons.
I don't think it's a shame at all. These corporations need to go back to the nothingness that their business plans were founded upon. Really! As soon as we see the end of banner ads, popups, popunders, scammies (or whatever the term is for the pages that you have to view for a mandtory amount of time before you can see the info you really want), and have a more 1992-era internet again, I'll be happy.

Wow. Like Samba? Last I checked, MS re-implemented their SMB protocol slightly differently each time they released a new version of Windows. I'm sorry, but I have no respect for MS standards in the industry, because it is obvious that they can't even set standards within their own company.
Is this project truely open source, or does it merely have source code available? For the difference, please refer to the free software foundation's website.
Generally, when something has source available, but isn't open source, the company or people behind the program are just looking for geeks to fix their bugs for free, and anticipating closing the source once the more difficult bugs are worked out.

Yay Microsoft! Of the thousands of software and hardware companies out there, in almost every market, there are probably only a few dozen which haven't been completely alienated by their predatory tactics. Hopefully game companies will quit coming out with XBOX games, but the desire for profit is so overpowering that most companies would cut their own wrists and throat to get some of the proverbial fat cash. If only for a little while. Kind of like stacker.
AT&T "deathstar" broadband does the same thing. In fact, I installed their cute virtual technician software and it ended up fucking my machine up a bit. Fixable, but still annoying.
If asked about WHY companies include spyware / trojans, they usually burp something wet and smelly up about how falling revinues from banner ads (blech) etc, aren't all there. Duhhh!!! Then they point out the fact that by clicking the "Agree" button you have agreed to anything they want to do to your computer, privacy, or anal orifice. Basically, I see that in the very near future, every windows program will have built-in spyware that phones home to mamma. Even right now, limewire, gnutella, kazaa, bearshare, any commercial game demo (except RTCW, thanks ID!!!), unregistered and maybe even registered opera, and a whole glut of software I am not aware of and could care less about already have it built in.
Maybe that's what Magic Lantern is: the spyware that is included by default in most new software.
Fuck all that shit in the ear.

You may remeber the newton, but apparently you never really used one. Mine is sitting on the desk nearby (MessagePad 110). I used the machine all the time, until I got a Palm Pilot. The handwriting recognition, after a training period of about a month, was bitchin'! My handwriting looks like that of a four year old chimpanzee. The Newton was able to keep up with it at full speed. I used Grafitti on it for a bit, but gave up and went back to the original Newton HWR because it worked well for me.
Writing off UNIX and UNIX-like OS's because they are old is unwarranted. Good ideas about multi-user, multi-tasking, and extensible operating systems don't come along with every new release of Windows. Sorry to burst your little bubble. Unix is an OLD concept, but a good one.
Enzo Ferrari: Well, it's a great new car, except for these two problems: the wheel and the internal combustion engine.
Engineer: But, SIR, both of those are very useful concepts! What would..
Ferrari: You see, son, the internal combustion engine is well over a hundred years old now. And the wheel! Well, the Egyptians had it!! No, those ideas are too old.
Have you ever used the Gimp in text mode? How about trying to graph in three dimensions? Visualize molecular data? There is a place for both graphics and the command line - none is the 'best' for all purpoises.

I would be extremely cautious in asessing the Russian Navy as "stupid". They are, and have been since the early 50's, one of two pre-eminent navies in the world. After WW2, in what was known as project paperclip, the US and USSR bargained over, and assimilated, prominent German scientists. They got many of the naval ones. Also, the Russian sub fleet is much stronger than the US fleet in many key ways, which can be easily researched (http://www.fas.org).
One can't expect Microsoft to offer a settlement which doesn't increase its dominance in the market. That is the ultimate goal to which ANY of its actions can be attributed. Instead of Microsoft telling the federal government what it is going to do, it is time for us Americans to tell the government to tell Microsoft what to do. Unfortunately, this is an unlikely scenario, for a few reasons. First and foremost, Microsoft is a good money maker for investors. Secondly, Microsoft is an ENORMOUS intelligence asset for the feds, intentionally or not. Thirdly, Microsoft can spin this against any potential opposition: "Don't take the future away from our children!"
Microsoft scares me. It also scares many european and asian governments. BEWARE!
The script kiddies probably knew about this long before CERT did. This is the major problem with private bug lists for vendors; It gives script kiddies a while to continue exploiting boxes while the vendors prepare patches. I would rather know right away, disable FTP, and do without for a few days, than wait until the bug was fixed before I am informed. Private lists, like all other forms of security by obscurity, are inherently ineffective.

You're assuming that they are making money on clickthroughs exclusively and not on all the other data that they collect from you. Who really knows how much data mining these things do on your PC, without your knowledge or consent?
I am as paranoid about this kind of software as I am about people cracking into my machine. They are both non-consensual, and offer no information about their motives.

Unfortunately, because of the tech situation and there being a lot of out of work coders (etc) managers think the time is ripe for coders to recieve a message: that they should act, think, and work just like every other kind of worker. If you think that this isn't right, act now and insist on being able to work like you want to. Otherwise, find a different job and don't give notice. BURN YOUR BRIDGES!

Lately, I have been comparing HDTVs and LCD projectors. The fact is, projectors can do as many lines at 1/2 - 1/3 the cost. Compare yourself!

Wow, you must be spoiled to think that 1000 Kbps is a low-bandwidth transfer rate.
