First off I am a US citizen and proud of it! MY country is the best damn country in the world. If any other Americans don't think so then GET THE FUCK OUT!!! We don't want you here!!
People can bullshit all day long as to hopw the US had this coming...This is ludicrous, utterly!
We in the US have it very good, even some of the very impoverished are still 10X better than the lowest low in other countries. We do our damndest to help. And all we get from the world is stabbed in the back. I'm not saying we're perfect, but we always try to help.
For example:
World wide catastrophes:
Any time there is an earthquake, volcanoe, drought, hurricane (typhoon), anything...We the US will be there to help. Pouring Billions of dollars into the problems of the world.
When was the last time someone helped us? The Los Angeles earthquake. Who helped? if you can name me another country, you are a better man than I. I can't remember any. All the tornados that go through the central US every year flattening towns...who helps? No one. We handle this ourselves.
After WW2...who propped up Europe, providing Billions in loans that never were repayed (even the interest was forgiven) The US that's who.
We are not a perfect country. Our government has mad grievious mistakes in the past, BUT that does not give anyone EVER the right to fly in here and attack the innocent civilians.
During the Gulf War Schwarzkof said we took extreme care to avoid collateral damage, Our intent was not to harm civilians. Hell, you could see it when the ground troops were rolling in...the soldiers were surrendering...did we shoot them? NO, we gave them better care than thier own goverenment.
To quote Gen Schwarzkof "...these bastards come in here and take out as many civilians as possible" it really makes you question our judgement.
If the US would pull out of the world stage...What would happen? total chaos...this world would be in ruin. What do you honestly think that China or Russia could do our part? If you do you are an idiot.
We do so much for this world...and we get spat on. Like I said are we perfect? Hell no! But we do have the best thing going...
I love my country and I hope we continue our ways of helping out everyone else.
I' am afraid that this time these assholes have "awoken the sleeping giant" and this giant is PIST.

Sorry about the rant, but I am sick of assholes dissing my country. Also sorry about the spelling.
I've tried the whole "Immersion" Tech with those Logitech Mice. It kind of feels like a gummed up mouse (rollerball style, not Laser), almost like some forgot to clean the rollers. It get's annoying real fast.
I hope this is more than that, otherwise count me out.
I'm lucky if I get a post-it note with a little chicken scratch on it.
Actually the only time I get a "spec-like" thing is when I get it from other programmers. It takes a lot to teach the average user how to write a spec. Most of them never quite get it.
I'd love to have real specs, ahhh let me dream....
I picked up a IBM Thinkpad 380D off ebay for around $200. It does everything I need for light duty; internet, word processing, programming...Civ2. For what I paid I think I got the better of the deal.
All I need now is a cable modem and wireless hub...
This innovation allows the user to create form letters with ease. It automatically searches the Social Security Administration for deceased individuals to use as senders.
HDTV has a much greater hurtle to cross than Color TV did.
I don't think your analogy is quite correct. B&W and color tv's were "backward compatable". You could still watch any TV with a B&W set. It just wasn't colorful. With HDTV, you need all this converter crap. It's not a simple plug it in and go machine.
Until they can get the HDTV's to the point that the average user can use them it will remain for the users with the money.
(that may be 5 years or 10...depends on the manufacturers and broadcasters).
It's the history of this country. The "old school" immigrants have been bashing "new school" immigrants since the start of the country. Unfortunately that's what we do. Is it right? No, but it's the US. I give 'this' immigrant issue about 30 years and then they'll be complaining about some "new" group of immigrants coming in and taking all the jobs.
It's used to be that the immigrants took the low-end jobs like garbage collectors and stuff like that. Now some of them are going for the higher end ones too. Really nothing has changed since the 1700's (on the society side), people are just as biggoted and short sighted as they were then. It's just now we can flame each other with email instead of yelling at town hall meetings.
Right now, I'm one of the lucky ones...fresh out of school (about 3 years actually, not too fresh) and at a good company. But I have seen how some other companies have fscked their older IT employees. It makes you see how expendable we actually are. For that reason I don't plan on staying in IT forever, I want to retire with a feeling of worth, not that some company just gave up on me.
I wish the immigrants luck, they're going to need it. If anything can be messed up the Feds will be the ones to do it.

"A preposition is the wrong word to end a sentence with."
The Martial Arts Honor is NOT just a "euphemism for chauvinistic my-dick-is-bigger than-yours penis waving"
Granted an anime cartoon is not the best place to show martial arts, but it's not the worst.
Christ said turn the other cheek, I will not disagree with that. But he didn't say "Go ahead and let the guy pummel you into the ground" A slap or minor altercation is one thing, but self protection situation is another.
Personally I'd rather have my children learn the Martial Arts and be able to DEFEND themselves from the hordes of jerks out there.
The Martial Art code is basically to make oneself better mentally and physically. Children and adults involved in the Martial Arts tend to gain a much better self image than they had before. Self-confidence is crucial in this day and age. If you want your kids to speak for themselves and not be "influenced" as much by the "evil" outside forces the Martial Arts are the way to go.
It's not so much a "my dick is bigger than yours" it more of the idea of "Don't Tread on Me". It is called "Self-Defense" after all... not self-offense.
Personally I think the idea of having a hobbie outside of computers really does help keep your mind a little more fresh. Mine is karate, it's great stress reliever. Imagining being attacked by helpless users and having to defend myself by pounding on them. Ahhhhhhh! What better therapy. Really though, it's nice to have soemthing physical to counter the mental.
And having a wife whose a social worker...I can get completely away from programming when I need to.
Formal specs are a god-send IF you ever get them. Programming by trial and error has got to be the most anti-productive way of working. I've done both, and believe me, with formal specs it makes the writing, debugging process awhole lot simpler and cleaner.
To use an example, I typically write code for manufacturing systems. IF I'm lucky my spec consists of a Post-it note with some chicken scratch on it. It ususally takes a long time to hash out all the "actually specs" of what the user wanted. On the FEW occasions I did get a formal spec, it took half as long to write the code, and hardly any time to debug it. And to this day those are the only programs I don't have to keep going back and "adjusting".
So, yes, in the real world, typically you won't get specs, clean room tests.... But that doesn't mean they aren't important.
I wouldn't want a Structural Engineer building a bridge by trial and error.
What about Apple Records vs Apple Computers? Granted neither can go into the others business. If the businesses are distinct enough I don't think "Barbie" vs "the Barbies" would be too confusing. IANAL, but this is just my opinion.
I want to download the RH 6.2, but I'm running into some problems.
Work uses Microsoft Proxy server, and I can't get the FTP programs (WS_FTP) to connect outside of our LAN, (our local admin says it the M$ proxy incompatability, I don't know enough about it to question ).
I can connect to the Metalabs through the internet browser though. so at the moment the only way I can download 6.2 is to point and click my way through ALL the files.
I'm not a network admin so I'm kinda restricted in what I can do.
If anyone knows of a FTP program that works with MS Proxy software or if there is a massive ZIP file somewhere I could download, I'd appreciate it.
>(remember, the U.S. has about four times as >much)
What kind of b*ll*cks is that? Personally, I'd say the reverse is true, because of the legacy of old Imperial China, which had more history than anyone.
I think he meant government wise.
China's Communism vs US Democracy. (1949 vs 1776 type thing.)
1. If I say Bill Clinton sucks, I know that the CIA or FBI isn't going to come knocking at my door.
2. If I want to leave the country for any reason, I can.
3. I can write what I want, read what I want, see what I want. Yes there are pressures from outside sources to control the "under-belly" of our culture. But, hey, If I want to do it bad enough I can and I don't have to worry about being put to death for it, (first degree murder aside)
4. We musn't be to bad. We have thousands of people from Cuba, China, Mexico, etc, etc trying to get in illegally.
We do have our problems, every country does. But I'll be damned if I'd rather live anywhere else.
We'll break this down into easily (hopefully) understandable chunks.
1. USENET servers are operated by indivdual Sysadmins. These sysadmins "own" thier systems.
2. ISP's are given permission to use the USENET news groups provided that they follow the rules. One major rule is that "CONTROL THE SPAM". SPAM is a problem on USENET. It clogs up bandwidth and drive space with USELESS information.
3. If the ISP doesn't control it's SPAM, the Sysadmins of the USENET sites can collectively agree that this ISP is not following the rules. The sysadmins then procede with the UDP.
4. UDP - Usenet Death Penalty - Abbreviated Def. If an ISP doesn't follow USENET rules of conduct, USENET new group sysadmins will put the ISP's domain (eg. @HOME.COM) on the "do not accept messages from" list.
5. The UDP is used to pressure the ISP into cleaning up it's problems regarding USENET SPAM.
6. Typcially the UDP is a last resort, as it was in the case of @home.com. They had been contacted about the problem repeatedly, and nothing was ever done.
7. NO user has any right to any USENET server, accept for the sysadmin himself/herself.
An AC in a reply down below stated a very good question that probably will never get looked at: Who keeps Moderating this guy up?
When I first saw this article I knew nothing about UDP, and very little about how USENET actually worked. After reading the UDP FAQ my eyes were open. S-terminal, you really should read it, you might then begin to understand. You have no rights to other's USENET servers. None..period. If the Sysadmin for alt.barney.die.die.die doesn't like you or you domain he doesn't have to let you post messages on his system. @Home has let a small problem fester into a big one, now in order for them to clean up their act something drastic needed to be done.
Where I work I'm fairly lucky, the IS dept is one of the few areas that doesn't "strictly" enforce ISO 9001. (the word "strictly" is use very loosely)
We're one of those shops where we have 9001 certification only because it looks good on paper, not because we follow the methodologies of it.
It's kind of funny when the employee messages state that "the ISO inspector will be around today and any questions he asks should be answered using your ISO booklet"...that is, give him the answer what we should be doing, not what we are doing. And the tend to steer the inspector away from the know problem areas.
It's a joke, but it allows us to put that neat little logo on our company letterhead...makes perfect sense to me....yeah right!

MTV has got to be the most lame network aout there. At first I thought it was NBC with it's Y2K movie, now I'm not so sure. Back when MTV was cool, (early-mid 80's) I don't think they's ever do such stupid stuff, but especially lately it seems their choice of programming has gone down-hill fast. In recent memory I can think of that whole "Hacker" program that dealt with scrip-kiddies running 'top' on there Linux boxes. Now they're trying to increase public panic by telling their viewers that we're all going to die. I wish they would go back to what made them great, showing good videos. They need to cut out the rest of this BS. OK, I'm done ranting now. I get kinda testy when something cool from my childhood gets F*&^ed up like MTV did. oh, well I guess somebody likes it. Noel

I do have one 'maybe racist' observation from DBZ..
Mr Popo...as endearing as he maybe I get the strong feeling of Vaudeville blackface performers.
Everytime he says "Oh, Kame!" I can see "Oh Mamae!"
Does anybody else get that feeling? I'm not a racist person, just an observer. Something that struck me odd.
