  1. Oops! on Momentous Big Bang Findings Questioned · · Score: 1

That's got to be really embarrassing, especially for all the people who didn't catch the error.

  2. Use it for education on Oil Man Proposes Increase In Oklahoma Oil-and-Gas Tax · · Score: 1

It would be nice if the Oklahoma Legislature would use some of this money to halt its war on education. With 22% annual budget cuts, Oklahoma schools aren't doing so well.

Slashdot does not care one whit. You are no longer the customer. The more time of yours they can waste, the more money they make selling it to their customers.

  4. Re:Q: Why Are Scientists Still Using FORTRAN in 20 on Why Scientists Are Still Using FORTRAN in 2014 · · Score: 5, Informative

This is absolutely right. It's also easier to write, in many cases. Most scientific applications don't need things like lambda expressions or derived classes. Many people who write applications as tools in their research don't want to spend time learning esoteric aspects of languages.

Injection wells are the cause, according to USGS.

Slashdot won't take this comment because I typed it too fast, so I'll type some more. Apparently Slashdot designers no longer use keyboards, because their new site is so cumbersome and slow to use with a keyboard, and they have no clue how long it takes to type a comment.

  6. Sure... on Microsoft Cheaper To Use Than Open Source Software, UK CIO Says · · Score: 1

Sure, if you consider the bribes, campaign contributions, lobbying gifts, and other payouts.

  7. You are incorrect. For example, the National Park Service ordered their rangers to begin using the term "Climate Change" and stop using "Global Warming" around 2005 or 2006. This also took place in many other agencies that dealt with the public. Previously, "Global Warming" had been used in official publications.

  8. Buy a new one on Ask Slashdot: Which VHS Player To Buy? · · Score: 2

Get a cheap, new VHS player. It's higher quality than the expensive ones were 30 years ago. Something like Toshiba SD-V296. A used one will probably work, but you're taking a chance that it's sold because it's unreliable.

  9. Only most of the time? on Winning Algorithms For Rock, Paper, Scissors · · Score: 1

Slashdot thinks I type too fast, so they won't take this comment until I wait a while. I can only guess that they want more drivel to fill the white space on the page.

Does this mean the new menu requires an additional mouse click? I can hit alt-B for bookmarks today. If I upgrade, do I lose this functionality? Does anybody care about ease of use any more, or is it just looks?
