  1. Re:He seems conflicted on Dvorak Looks Back At 'Another Crappy Tech Year' · · Score: 1

The moonlanding isn't the epitome of advancement. I mean, really, what has the moon landing done for us? Has it provided any major insights into new technology? Has it helped to progress society to a higher level? Well, I must say, barely. I see the moon landing as the US saw it at the time. A dick-measuring contest. Propaganda by beating the russians. Revenge for Yuri Gagarin and the Sputnik. The internet on the other hand is of a entirely different league. It has given us such a new way of communicating that we are unable to think about a life without it. And guess what, the internet didn't start out with a "moonlanding". It has indeed gone with tiny steps. From ARPAnet, to universities, to 3000 baud modems, to www, to broadband. Al tiny steps in itself. Not something that a lot of people know now and will know in the future. But the dickmeasuring in space between the superpowers is something that will be grafted into the minds of man. Sad really.

Well, I still don't see how this differs from commercial piracy. You are making money with the works of other people and you don't have to pay a dime. Everytime is see a /. post about piracy, everybody's pro-pirate. But if the pirate makes money then they are totally against it. Radio works exactly the same way, yet /.ers make an exception using an advertisement clause. I then refute that everythings advertisement for a band and suddenly I don't understand the fundamental workings of a radio.

Guess what, where I live radio stations DO have to pay for broadcasting a song since they are making money off it. I regard that as totally fair. Yet /.ers have this crazy double standard. Doublethink indeed.

Why should I pay for a concert? It's free advertisement. CDs? Free advertisement, so it's best for them to give them away for nothing. Merchandising? Free advertisement. Guess what? Everything is free advertisement. But that doesn't mean it should be free.

I once saw a movie about Nam veterans. They we're living like bums and when the reporters asked them questions about the war they could only answer with one question:"We won the war but the people made us lose it". Probably a sad case of PTSS. The war was lost and still, many years later, veterans are saying they won it. Makes me sigh when I read it. It's a sad sad world sometimes.
