I've seen a few multiple-DVD games on the PS2. I'm sure they'll happen on the 360 (although maybe not, if they never get any RPGs...)

The fact that the Toshiba HD-DVD player costs $450 on Amazon vs. $700 for the Samsung Blu-Ray player vs. $1000 for the Sony Blu-Ray player makes you wonder who would be excited about Blu-Ray?

A lot more people will when there's a $499 blu-ray player that also plays the newest games.

1080p-capable sets are cheaper than you think. You can get a 42" Westinghouse 1080p LCD for $1599 at Best Buy right now (and get a free home theater system with it...). The 37" version of this set has been around for $1199 (not sure of current prices).

Say what you want about them, but Sony knows hype. Think about it - you tell people that there are problems, only 400,000 PS3s will be available. You create a frenzy as all the early adopters flock to preorder. Then, on release, you send out 1,000,000 and, due to the frenzy, sell out nearly immediately. Or maybe you tell everyone that your console will retail at $499, say even THAT is too cheap, then when you release, you say that due to (bullshit reason), the price has dropped to $429.

Granted, these aren't likely scenarios, but they would be wonderful ways of manipulating the market. I wouldn't be surprised if Sony is saving some great news for closer to launch.

Actually, with the PS3, the model difference isn't a big deal. All of the base functionality is in the $500 system, you just miss out on the "extras" like 40GB extra hard drive space, HDMI, a memory stick reader, etc. It's not like the 360 where the base system doesn't even come with a hard drive...

If you think that the main Final Fantasy and (presumably) Dragon Quest series won't carry the PS3, you know nothing about the Japanese game market - especially since Microsoft is (once again) all but completely ignoring the JRPG genre. We'll see about the Wii.

According to this (which, admittedly, may be a little inaccurate), Final Fantasy X sold more copies than any XBox or Gamecube game.

In addition - GTA having a mass following on PC? Not very likely. Each of the three PS2 GTA games sold over 10 million copies - this is a nigh-impossible mark to hit for a PC game. GTA is far, far bigger on consoles than it ever was on the PC.

Are you kidding? If a kid wants something for Christmas, parents will KILL to get that for them. Remember the Cabbage Patch Kids fiasco? Furbies? Tickle-me Elmo? People were FIGHTING IN THE AISLES for these things. Tickle-me Elmos were selling for hundreds of dollars. And to pre-empt the inevitable "but when the 360 and Wii are cheaper and right there, parents will just get those instead..." talk, there were plenty of other dolls and stuffed animals available, but when your kid wants a Cabbage Patch Kid, they're not going to be happy with a Little Lulu instead. Kids are brats.

That, combined with the huge rush that all recent console releases have expeienced (and the subsequent 200% price-gouging on ebay), will all but guarantee a sell-out. I'd be willing to put money on it.

The real question is how it'll do after the holidays, and after the initial rush. That's when price ACTUALLY comes into play, but Sony has other things helping them along there (most notably some nice exclusives). We'll see.

Also, I find it hilarious that everyone conveniently forgets that there's a $500 PS3 that will be perfectly fine for 95% of people who want one.

Yeah, except that falls short when the PS3 has more games I want to play. Initial cost of the consoles is not everything! I don't care if I can get a Wii for half the price if the games I'm looking forward to most are on the PS3 and 360.

It seems like Sony is going to remain the route for normal Japanese-style RPGs (Final Fantasy, etc). This pretty much guarantees success in Japan, and likely here as well.

Of course, you could also look at the opposite perspective, and say that Sony wants to give developers the choice of whether to release games on blu-ray or DVD, unlike MS who are giving 360 deevlopers no choice whether they like it or not.

If you've a developer, and came up with some AMAZING new gotta-have-it game that happened to take up 30GB of space due to it being simply massive in scope, which would you rather do, develop it for a console that supports it straight away, release it on 4 DVDs and piss off people by requiring disc changes, or scale it back?

I'm not being an apologist here, as I agree that the added cost makes it hard to stomach, but I can't disagree more with the "640k should be enough for everyone!" view that people seem to have with storage on the next-gen consoles.
