  1. Re:I smell lawsuits, how about you? on Indiana First With Computerized Grading · · Score: 3, Insightful

Why is that? If you had two students, one that you knew was brilliant and one that you knew wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, would you give them the same grade for the same paper? If the smarter person put 20 minutes of effort into the paper while the dumber person worked their ass off for a week on it, why shouldn't the grades be different?

This is why essays SHOULD be subjectively graded instead of objectively graded. You need to take into account the writing abilities of the student and determine if it's a good or a bad paper based on what they're capable of in addition to technical aspects of the paper.

Isn't this why there are remedial and accelerated english classes? To take into account the different levels of intelligence in students? If you took an 'A' paper from a remedial class, it's quite likely that it would be a 'D' in the accelerated class.

I'm sure they wouldn't make it so there was no dispute process. They'd have to be complete morons to make it so the grade the computer gave you was final. (not that that's unheard of from high-school personnel...)

I'm sure the computer can't tell sarcasm, or tell when a paper is a parody, or give extra points to a particularly good paper from a stupid student or take away points for a particularly bad paper from a brilliant student.

  4. Re:Great, but what about spam from outside? on FTC Porn Spam Regulation Now in Effect · · Score: 2, Insightful

Bingo. Laws that try to regulate spam are doomed to fail. Spammers really just don't care! If they're out of the country, this doesn't apply to them. If they're in the country but are clever enough to not be traced, this doesn't apply to them.

What I'd like to see is legislation that says the company advertising in the spam has the responsibility of making sure the spammer adheres to the laws (sexual explicit tagging, do-not-email-me-again lists, etc). Naturally, you'd have to prove that the company actually hired the spammers, but I'm sure we'd see a dramatic cutback in spam if you could hold the company accountable.

Unless you are planning not to bother going to see it, which as geeks and nerds, I frankly don't believe.

You're going to get a whole bunch of replies saying "I'M NOT GOING TO SEE IT! I REFUSE TO BECAUSE THE OTHER ONES WERE OMGSOBAD", but I'd wager that 95% of those people are just on the "The prequels suck!" bandwagon and will see it anyway. Plus, considering that this movie is the one that SO many people were waiting for (seeing Anakin turn into Darth Vader), it's even more unlikely that people will follow through with that.

Either way, the movie is going to make many hundreds of millions of dollars, so it doesn't really matter if a few hardcore Star Wars geks don't see it on principle.

I worked as a grocery store cashier for quite a while, and the two main types of coupons that popped out of those machines were:

    - You bought 2 of product A. Next time, if you buy 3 of product A, you'll get $0.35 off!
    - (Ooh, they bought brand A of paper towels!) If you buy brand B of paper towels next time, you'll get $0.35 off!

It was quite common to have a coupon print out for a competitor. It sticks out in my mind because a lot of customers would complain about getting coupons for products they don't like instead of the ones they actually use.
