  1. What an ultra-maroon on Bioethicist At National Institutes of Health: "Why I Hope To Die At 75" · · Score: 1

The physical and mental exercise and other healthy living efforts that he chastises are not so much to extend ones life, as to enhance quality of life -- for however long that may be.

He's just trying to ease the public into acceptance of euthanasia. I'm not necessarily opposed to euthanasia (by choice), but, it's not widely enough accepted for those who believe in a "duty to die," and who might like to see that built in to our "health care" system.

How many of us would say that traditional print, TV and radio ads have influenced us? Most would say they've not been affected. (And, some of those claims would actually be correct.) Yet, money keeps pouring into advertising, so, the ad buyers are convinced that it does make a difference.

WRT screen real estate, I get Firefox to leave more room than Chrome by making a couple of tweaks: Use View/toolbars/customize to move the URL bar and the few buttons I use, to the Menu bar. Also on View/toolbars, turn off visibility of the Navigation toolbar, and the Add-on bar. Next, add an extension called Hide Menubar. This allows you to just hit the Alt key if/when you need the menu, or the URL bar or buttons that now reside there. Conveniently, when I hit Ctrl-T for a new tab, the menu is shown, with the cursor in the URL bar, ready for me to type a new address. (I don't recall if I had to do any fiddling to make that occur.)

But, given the stated concern, paying for the extra unit effectively increases the price, so lowers the value of the unit for the US buyer. While $188 might seem acceptable for a modest travel machine (even though the upcoming Asus products look more attractive), $399 for the same machine doesn't look so good.

US teens are not particularly good at assessing value, but a few of those expected blog posts might venture into this area.

Staff members of the laptop project were concerned that American children might try the pared-down machines and find them lacking compared to their Apple, Hewlett-Packard or Dell laptops. Then, in this era of immediate global communications, they might post their criticisms on Web sites and blogs read around the world, damaging the reputation of the XO Laptop, the project staff worried.

I've enjoyed reading in this thread about rebate operations. I'm sure it helps explain the one rebate problem I've ever had -- out of dozens and dozens. I had bought a nice garage door from the big home improvement chain. The manufacturer was offering graduated rebates -- $50 up to $200, depending on the model of door. Mine qualified for a $150 rebate in the form of an in-store gift card, which would be fine, since I would be buying more stuff there.

When I got the rebate, it was for $50. I was pissed, and I would do anything to avoid going through telephone hell. So, I went to the customer service counter at the store. The manager went through hell for me. Considering the difficulties he had, with some pull and ready references, I know I would have had more trouble.

When I got the additional rebate card, it was for $50, leaving me still short $50. I spoke to the manager again. Of course, he didn't want to go through telephone hell again, so he gave me a $50 card on the spot.

Fortunately, the door was worth it, and it was competitively priced even before the rebate. $150 was a significant bonus.
