  2. Re:Pay teachers more on Have Mathematics Exams Become Easier? · · Score: 1

In the US I don't believe this is about teacher earnings. I haven't yet met a teacher who's said, "I don't get paid enough so I'm just not going to bother teaching subject x." My experience says that this is about parents complaining about their children's grades. A few loudmouths complain because they're "brilliant little girl susie" isn't getting an "A" in their class and before you know it, the class gets easier, and easier. I've seen this first hand - any classes that aren't geared toward a specific level (like AP classes) are just dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. In high school I gave up taking English entirely and went to the local community college. Spending hours copying dictionary entries for common words wasn't my idea of a challenging class.

  3. Broken Reply on RTS "World in Conflict" From a Design Perspective · · Score: 4, Insightful

I want to reply to a number of posts but when I hit "reply" it just sits there, broken, so I'll try to sum up my thoughts here instead...

Having played everything from the original Command and Conquer all the way up to and including World In Conflict I can say that WIC is actually a refreshing break from the usual - spend 90% of the mission grinding out a base and building up a huge army and then just rush and clobber your enemy - style RTS.

The resources you have for building units are just half of the game. There are, in fact, tactical aid points which are awarded to you for accomplishing various objectives. Using these points wisely is almost always a deciding factor in multiplayer games. Players can also switch between different roles - support, infantry, armor, and air. Your team's balance and how you respond to the opposing team's mix definitely requires some good tactics.

Finally, I think that the ground control style game play is more realistic. Let's be honest, very few real battles are a "Rush the enemy and kill / destroy everything - causalities be damned". Kamikaze missions in WIC don't work. Neither do lone rangers. I think there's more strategy in WIC than in most of the "build crap like crazy and then rush" RTS games. I'm not saying I haven't spent hours enjoying those games - just that this is a new, more realistic, type.

Netflix also comes with free streaming movies. The streaming library is much smaller than their DVD library, but it's a nice feature. With Netflix and Redbox I don't see how they think they're going to make any money. Both of those are a much, much better deal.

All it really takes is for journalists and authors everywhere to stop correcting their work for spelling and grammar mistakes... oh... wait... that's already happened. There was a time when a person could read a published article without tripping over simple typos and grammatical errors. Then the Internet happened and people decided that proofreading their work took too much time.

Right, but the objective here is to use moderation to bubble the main contenders to the top. If you've got two different posts with the same idea being moderated someone will have to be smart enough to combine the total scores together for the single idea. So... it makes sense to just mod the second one redundant and let the points / discussion continue in the other thread.

I've been thinking this myself. I think that most of the people that want rock band have bought / will soon purchase rock band. As an owner of rock band, this new game looks cool and everything, but I really don't need yet *another* set of drums and guitars and mics laying around. That crap already takes up a ton of space in my tiny living room. What am I going to do with 2 sets? eesh.

Yeah, you really should have played expert. Even just as a musician (but not drummer) I found it confusing at times playing some of the lower difficulties on the drums. You'd hit the snare once for every 4 times it was really hit. Or you'd hit the kick once instead of three times. Give it a try on expert - it can be tough, but it's a lot of fun.

Sometimes people don't know when to quit... I haven't used FF3 yet so I don't know if it applies but I finally gave up on WinAmp when it started looking too much like WMP. I had used WinAmp starting around 10 years ago (way before napster ruined everything :P ) It was a sleek, small little program. Then they released a new version that added a bunch of "features" they were "missing" that WMP had. I guess they hadn't considered that that was the very reason people like me were using it. At that point I just gave up and went back to using crappy old WMP (they'd finally added MP3 support by that point anyway).

Previous upgrades have often left me saying, "yeah, ok, new office, flashy buttons, whatever."
