Don't fool yourself, becoming a business mogul requires an incredible amount of work. Yes, there's a luck factor, there's a luck factor in everything you do in life. But look at people like Martha Stewart, the woman never sleeps. She works constantly to build / maintain her empire.

Don't fall into the BS trap of "I don't have because I'm not lucky enough". More than likely, you don't have what you want because you're some combination of not smart enough and/or not working hard enough. The person who pointed out that the American Dream is lost on lazy Americans is absolutely right. People need to stop watching HSN or QVC and talking about their "great new product" and just go out and make it. Look at Edison -

"I have not failed 700 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving that those 700 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work." -Edison.
That's the determination necessary to make a normal person into a great person.

If it's clear that it isn't significantly affecting productivity or network performance (be it bandwidth, e-mail server, whatever) then it's not worth sticking your head out for.
I have, however, come across users who are literally spending the majority of their day surfing illicit sites, filling their computer with garbage, and essentially being a drain on the company. Those are the users I've reported to upper management and seen fired for the actions. I'm not saying people should be allowed to surf porn at work, it's just not worth risking the backlash / distrust / hassle of reporting someone in some cases.

Now you could say that that argument doesn't apply to businesses but I'd say that the computers that were stolen from Wells Fargo a few years back would beg to differ. It shouldn't cost that much to use your iPhone anywhere in the world at this point. Those rates are "rape and pillage" rates and phone companies will need to fix that by coming up with more reasonable roaming policies and prices.
What? Why would they change their pricing? They just figured out a way to bilk people for more money when they aren't even using their phone! brilliant!

Sure, there were a handful of geek Treo users who checked email and surfed web pages every day, but they probably turned their paper-bills off after the first big one and moved on, problem "solved" for them because they really were gadget geeks.
Well, I don't know how different AT&T's billing is from Verizon's but we have about 10-15 users on Treos that have their e-mail pushed down from Exchange to them and that surf the Internet. I've seen our bills and they're only a few pages. Every e-mail that comes to them (some get 50+ a day easily) goes to their phone, yet we still don't have endless bills. The bill for our entire company's set of cell phones, wireless data cards for laptops and regular phone lines combined adds up to the same number of pages that some of these people have been getting for ONE phone. I'd be interested to know why iPhone / AT&T chose to go the route they did. It's obviously related either to the way iPhone does data transfers, the way AT&T tracks them, or both.

So many people working a lot of hours, that doesn't leave a lot of room to properly raise your kid. It's a hard line to draw between being poor raising kids responsibly or having some extra to be able to take everyone on a vacation every now and again. I see it with my sister who's taken the being poor approach. She's stressed out and often unhappy. Versus some other friends I have who have taken the other approach who are living stress free lifestyles taking their kids to Disneyland.
woah, what? Stress free and taking their kids to Disneyland? Most people that I know where both parents are working aren't stress free. The parents are thrashed from working full time jobs, maintaining the house, "raising" the kids, etc. The kids spend far more time in school / daycare than they do with their parents. Once they're older they act out to get attention. It's not a "stress free" situation and it's not an optimal way to raise your child.

I also have a sister who has chosen not to get a job so that she can be home with her children. Are they rich? Not at all - but her kids respect her, she's around them enough that she can instill the values she feels are important in them. Respect for authority, compassion, the value of family, self-control, etc.

IMO these things are going to serve a child far better than a trip to see mickey. I've never seen a kid arrested because they didn't get to see a goofy guy in a mouse outfit. I've had plenty of friends arrested because they had to respect for authority and completely lacked self-control. They were never taught these things by their parents. Honestly, I felt sorry for them.

And why would Microsoft kill the Windows gaming market? That's a ridiculous statement and it runs contrary to everything Microsoft is doing right now. They created DX10 specifically for the gaming market. They started the "Games for Windows" initiative specifically to get windows based games more floor / shelf space in retail stores. And then there's the Performance Rating -

"The idea behind the Windows Performance Rating is to help average consumers easily understand their Windows Vista PC's overall performance, and to simplify the process of determining whether certain software applications will run smoothly based on their system components," Microsoft said in a statement provided to CNET News.com.
aaand by software they mean games. The only other software that ever has trouble running on a PC is photo / audio editing software and the people running that rarely need help determining whether it will work on their PC. This number is so that clueless parents can buy their kids games for Christmas and know that they'll run. Microsoft is and has ALWAYS been all about getting AS MANY applications written for their OS as possible.
They are not killing the PC game market. They're trying to make it easier for the Windows game makers to port their games over to the sorry piece of garbage (red ring of death!?) they call the Xbox 360... for the obvious reason that right now it's pissing away money like a drunk man post-binge.

Most jobs in America are at small businesses (this is statistically accurate, i don't have a reference, feel free to google). Smaller companies are the most sensitive to cost of labor increases. The second you increase their cost of labor, they're just going to turn around and increase the cost of their products. Here in Oregon the jackalopes I live with insisted upon voting in an annual minimum wage increase. Thanks guys. Inflation has been stellar ever since. Minimum wage goes up faster than my wage. Which makes what used to be a lot of money, seem like not so much... why? because now everything costs more. Groceries, restaurants, gas (in oregon people pump your gas for you), etc.

Minimum wage shouldn't exist. Most minimum wage jobs require almost no skill. That's why their minimum wage. You're doing the freaking minimum - you're being paid accordingly. Additionally, with the annual minimum wage increases there is almost NO MOTIVATION to work harder to earn a raise. What's the point? Minimum wage will increase in a few months and then you'll be getting paid the same as everyone else again? This has happened to a few friends of mine nearly every year since then. They get a raise in June, then 6 months later they're back on minimum wage - same as everyone else. It makes it impossible for business owners to give people merit based raises and therefore differentiate between the people who WORK and the people who just show up.

For those of you claiming that it's not a "living wage" I'd question what you qualify as "living"? I'd say that food and shelter are all you need to live. You DO NOT NEED a cell phone, stereo, tv, cable, alcohol, cigarettes, computer, games, etc. If you can't afford an apartment - get a freaking roommate. Split the cost of groceries. MTV real world is not the REAL WORLD. In the real world if you want something more than the bare minimum - you need to work for it. If you don't want to work, then don't whine when you can't afford what you want. End of story.
